What Does "Can't Read" Really Mean?

Since I shared the Atlantic article about students even at elite colleges who "can't read," I've seen a lot of people asking what that even means. Parents in particular are incredulous because their elite college students graduated with honors, high grade point averages, and even high standardized test scores. I've even seen some people argue that it doesn't matter if their students can't read ...

Interesting that our own US government has included UNESCO documents ong it's list of resources explaining freedom & democracy. Considering we are a Constitutional Republic, I would say, your audience should see a pattern. Since our own government has skewed the meanings of freedom, we have to stand against it www.state.gov/classics-of-freedom-and-democracy/
It's great to see you on here again, Deb. ❤❤😎😎
Isn't the position that people should not be coerced one of morality?
Yes of course, which is why there can be no virtue with coercion.
@@TheReasonWeLearn Is it an example of objective morality?
@@emilymiller1792 I would say so, but I know many people disagree so I can't use the term literally.
She thought: Americans won’t obey any king on earth. Americans are free. That means they have to obey their own consciences. No king bosses Pa; he has to boss himself. Why (she thought), when I am a little older, Pa and Ma will stop telling me what to do, and there isn’t anyone else who has a right to give me orders. I will have to make myself be good. Her whole mind seemed to be lighted up by that thought. This is what it means to be free. It means, you have to be good. “Our father’s God, to Thee, author of liberty…” The laws of Nature and of Nature’s God endow you with a right to life and liberty. Then you have to keep the laws of God, for God’s law is the only thing that gives you a right to be free.”
Yes, but many people fixate on the "God" part, but whether you conceive of your conscience as guided by God, or by reason is irrelevant. No one -- least of all the religious person -- should have a qualm with the person who minds his or her own business, and seeks not to coerce them into thinking, believing, or doing as they do or would do. That includes forcing them into association with them. As I said in the video, "tolerance" and "acceptance" (never mind celebration) are VERY different things.
P.S., I'm well aware that both Rose and Laura were believers, and that Rose flirted with communism, and never did let go of her belief that freedom without belief in God was impossible, I just disagree with her (and Paterson) in this respect. I think it's not only possible, it's more likely b/c too many people lean on God for certainty, and it is the need for certainty in life that leads to a whole lot of bullying and coercion of other people. Virtue people tend to crave certainty, and freedom people tend to be more comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty -- even those who are believers btw, they're just less common.
@TheReasonWeLearn Leaning on God for certainty seems a misunderstanding of Him and the role of faith and the reality of His World. Kind of like thinking Truth is stuck to the literal.
@TheReasonWeLearn Most of the Founders believed in God, but they were not dogmatic about Him. It may be the dogmatism that causes problems for freedom.
@ I would agree.
Freedom without virtue devolves into the libertine and licentiousness.
Virtue cannot exist without freedom. Please watch the video.
@TheReasonWeLearn We are in agreement. I was not disputing anything. Only making a related observation.
I agree this is where we are. Thank you for covering this. And thank you for being easy on the eyes.
One more comment here, im David Starkey's youtube lecture on The British Empire: The Complex Truth, he mentions how the countries of the Anglosphere acquired their different political flavors, shall we say, depending on at what point each of them broke away from the British empire. Mention is made of this later in the video, sorry I don't have extact timing. Anyway one more aspect of what distinguishes US political culture from that of Canada.
There seems to be a misconception that the "religious" people are "virtue" people. Have you considered that some religious people are freedom people?

BRUCE THE GOAT
That went alright but I wish someone would explain to this woman the libertarian argument against abortion which sets the anti-abortion position apart from the pro-slavery position, rendering the analogy between the two hopelessly fraught and intellectually shallow. Seriously, it's such a cringe shit argument.
@@nowthatsprogress8708 where did I say they were exactly analogous? There is a point at which the fetus has rights too--i'd never deny it. You're taking one tiny statement where I simply said there are people--because there are - - who would literally force someone to carry a child to term no matter what, zero exceptions, and at one time there were justifications for slavery that involved virtue arguments. But most virtue people argue for zero restrictions OR zero exceptions. Freedom people tend to allow for some nuance in the discussion and mostly prefer the state not be involved at all. There are two libertarian arguments against abortion is that it's an initiation of force against the fetus to kill it, or against the mother and the fetus (see Chinese forced abortion).
"critical race theory (CRT), intellectual and social movement and loosely organized framework of legal analysis based on the premise that race is not a natural, biologically grounded feature of physically distinct subgroups of human beings but a socially constructed (culturally invented) category that is used to oppress and exploit people of colour. Critical race theorists hold that racism is inherent in the law and legal institutions of the United States insofar as they function to create and maintain social, economic, and political inequalities between whites and nonwhites, especially African Americans. Critical race theorists are generally dedicated to applying their understanding of the institutional or structural nature of racism to the concrete (if distant) goal of eliminating all race-based and other unjust hierarchies." If you have any issues with this, then you're part of the problem. This video is beyond dumb. You have no idea what you're even talking about. You mention all of these things without ever identifying how you understand them. This is no different than watching Fox News. A lot of talking points, no substance.
This is very interesting. From reading David Hackett Fischer's Albion's Seed, about the four founding cultures of America, I predict these opposing viewpoints and resulting conflicts are a built-in part of our landscape.
Yes!💯. 🙏🏼Deb and Bruce.
in his description of the freedom people seem to have an Ayn Rand type philosophy , at least as i understand it'. am I wrong?
I don't want to speak for him, but it is certainly sounds similar.
Ayn Rand believes in an objective morality, the exact opposite of what Bruce describes.
@@W1LLi4m_ yes and no. He's using objective in the literal sense as in everyone would agree, not objective as in measured against *a rational value* which is how she defines it: "The standard of value of the Objectivist ethics-the standard by which one judges what is good or evil-is man’s life, or: that which is required for man’s survival qua man. Since reason is man’s basic means of survival, that which is proper to the life of a rational being is the good; that which negates, opposes or destroys it is the evil. Since everything man needs has to be discovered by his own mind and produced by his own effort, the two essentials of the method of survival proper to a rational being are: thinking and productive work."

Pretty sure transformative sel wants white educators to be more inclusive and empathetic towards non-white students. But as long as people like you exist, transformative sel will never be realized. You are racist. You don’t want to hear about white history from a different perspective. Real history says white people enslaved and committed genocide against blacks and American Indians.

Great presentation! Thanks!
This was a great discussion. I've studied James Lindsay's work for probably 5 or 6 years now and can follow along with his long form podcasts. That said, I think James could still do a better job at making some of this information accessible as both you and Clint have done here. What I'd like to hear from Clint or James is exactly why portions of some of the work of these forbidden thinkers (Schmitt, Heidegger, Strauss, Nietzsche, Dugin, etc.) are not useful. By this, for example, I mean say we use some ideas or Aristotle, but not all (e.g. Aristotle was "OK" with slavery - very different time and social organization but it illustrates the use of some ideas of a thinker, but not all). I really think that should be fleshed out some. I understand the gnostic-hermetic/Heraclitus ontological problematics regarding "becoming" as opposed to "is" and objective reality - but - I still wonder why some ideas can't be used or considered if they're good or reasonable ideas. Another example - Social Gospel were leftists who used religion or a religious type of veneer to push aspects of "progress" - yet some aspects of progress are generally good, like better building access for handicapped people.
What I think is worse and coming down the pipeline is the popular adoption of the sisterterm malinformation. It is one of the MLM trifecta words that the government has warned us about, but I haven’t seen very much of it. “Yes, it may be true, but it’s counter narrative and we have public health to think about” will be what they say.
Blowing the lid off of children being aware of the world that they’re growing up in! Please! Keep them ignorant of the world around them! It can only help them as they go forward in life!

No male camel noses under the tent flaps. Living in fantasy land is just not allowed after toddlerhood. The fact that the make believe is being codified to the harm of women is alarming. Thank you Deb for sounding the alarm and saying just one is too many. Male and female are easily determined by chromosomes XY or XX. “Identity” should have nothing to do with team membership. Maybe the quickest way to end the problem is to stop calling the teams “Men’s” and “Women’s” but rather “XX Team” and “XY Team”.
Your comment about parents wondering whether re-engineering humanity might be good and result in less war made me think of the movie Serenity. Not quite analagous, but could very likely have thexsame outcome. Pretty sure it won't work out the way they want.
My local district teaches phonics.
Thank you for your brilliant analysis, It is so nice to know that there is someone else out there that sees what I see. I feel a little less crazy after listening to you.
People who don't feed their kids get their kids taken away because of neglect and malnourishment of the child.
Painting all schools as complicit in the degradation of creativity massively over-simplifies the issue. The 1600 kids he studied were in a Head Start program. Kids in Head Start are often from very challenging backgrounds. To what degree can poverty negatively affect creativity? Also, if these kids are in a Head Start program, is it likely they are in an impoverished area? So, are conclusions about all schools and creativity being drawn from a low-quality subset? And, to what degree are the kids' home lives potentially affecting the results? To what degree does the over-emphasis on standardized tests, "competencies", and zero tolerance policies affect creativity? Most local public schools would rather such things get dialed back, but their implementation may be tied to the stick of funding. I attended public schools that did a great job of encouraging creativity in different arenas of education. But, that was pre-NCLB in a town that seemed to be oriented somewhat towards Mortimer Adler's vision for education.
@@emilymiller1792 you appear to have completely missed the entire point of this episode, and that's fine. Enjoy your public government run schools. I will continue fighting them.
@TheReasonWeLearn Why fight them? Bring them back under local control. It would mean our constitutional republic is working again. I definitely support homeschooling, and you know my stance on charters and vouchers. If you want to criticize what has happened/is happening to public school, fine. But the criticisms I addressed miss the mark.
@@TheReasonWeLearn ruclips.net/video/69HqxE74P5w/видео.html Finally watched Charlotte Iserbyt. She, too, sees the value in defending public schools against charters, vouchers, and the dumbing down of curricula.
Frederick the Great, the originator of 'The Prussian system", did not want to make mindless soldiers. He wanted an educated populace, and, he was a big fan of republics (see Anti-Machiavel and his other writings). It sounds like his public education system was twisted into something else after his death.

I'm confused by this because, if I am tasked to read something very boring, it will take me a lo time to comprehend what I'm reading. If I really enjoy the subject matter, I read quickly, and understand the material immediately. I'm not sure what that means about my reading ability.
@@AetheriusComics it depends...Some people find things boring because they have trouble understanding them. I'd have to know more about what you find boring and why.
@@TheReasonWeLearn Great point. It's quite a conundrum, as, some people find things boring because they have trouble understanding them, and I have trouble understanding things that I find to be boring. So, it's the reverse issue for me. For instance. I can quickly read several articles and studies about the life cycle of Black Holes, run into new words like "esoteric", or "accreting", research the words and understand the meaning in order to understand the article in it's entirety. Then, recite the info, have conversations about Blackholes with others and both come to the same or similar conclusions about things like, how our galaxy most likely has a Blackhole in the center. While I can do that, if I had to read, say, a book on the history of the Persian War, it will take me a seriously long time to understand what I'm reading, as it doesn't interest me. If I were in a school, and all that was available to read where subject matter that I find to be boring, I will probably score low on tests, and be labeled as a poor reader. Which confuses me because if all of the subject matter were about things of interest to me, I would be deemed a very intelligent reader. So this leaves me with the question of, is reading ability more about being able to comprehend anything you read no matter how boring? If so, that's strange because there are people who are interested in a wide range of topics but read and understand info, poorly. What are your thoughts on this?
Very informative!
