Waves on a spherical world
This simulation shows a solution to the wave equation in spherical geometry. The initial condition is an approximation of a Dirac delta mass at the North Pole in terms of the first 25 spherical harmonics. From there, the wave propogates southward before collapsing on itself at the South Pole and returning to the north.
Whenever you compute the Fourier coefficients for a discontinuous signal, there are peaks and valleys from the fact that the partial sum of trigonometric polynomials cannot converge uniformly. This is known as Gibbs phenomena, and the same exact thing happens with spherical harmonics. The shading highlights the peaks and valleys on the surface, which is why they appear as a...

Statistical Mirror Symmetry

This is a talk for the fourth edition of the Information Geometry and Affine Differential Geometry Conference (IGADG IV) at Chongqing University of Technology. There were a number of experts in complex differential geometry in the audience, and as such there is a noticeable difficulty spike about 13 minutes in when I start discussing complex geometry. But hopefully the first third of the talk i...
Hyperbolic Information Geometry

Information geometry gives a way to associate a geometry to a parametrized family of probability distributions. As suggested by the name, this notion has roots in information theory, and yields surprising insights into many well-known statistical distributions. In this video, I discuss several examples of probability families whose induced geometry turns out to be hyperbolic. Artwork: Entropy I...
Why is the sound of a single string harmonious?
Просмотров 217Год назад
Building from the first video in this series, we study consonance and dissonance in terms of vibrations and the eigenvalues of the Laplacian. In this video, we discuss the relationship between the lowest eigenvalues of strings and more complicated objects. In particular, we focus on the fundamental gap, which is the difference between the lowest two eigenvalues. The first video: ruclips.net/vid...
The mathematics of vibrations: From music to quantum mechanics

Why do different instruments have different sounds? Can you hear the shape of a drum? How does a laser work? Although these seem like very different questions, from a mathematical perspective they all boil down to understanding the theory of how objects vibrate. In this video, we discuss some fundamental properties of wave equations and their relationship to eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the ...
Optimal Transport and Information Geometry for Machine Learning and Data Science
Просмотров 16 тыс.2 года назад
Optimal transport and information geometry provide two distinct frameworks for studying the distance between probability measures. Although these are separate theories, there are many connections between them and they both have applications to data science and machine learning. This video is adapted from a talk at the SIAM Conference on Mathematics of Data Science (MDS22). At several points in ...
A moduli space of polygons

Polygons in three dimensions might seem simple, but their geometry connects many areas of math and has surprising applications to chemistry and signal processing. In this video, I give a brief introduction to the moduli space of polygons in Euclidean space. This is a submission for the Summer of Math Exposition 2. Apologies for any audio issues. The recording had an echo which I couldn't fully ...
A priori estimates for constant scalar curvature Kahler metrics with applications to existence
Просмотров 1492 года назад
In his talk at the ISU Geometric Analysis seminar, Professor Jingrui Cheng described some recent work on constant scalar curvature Kahler metrics, which gives some exciting connections between geometric analysis and algebraic geometry. Abstract: I will explain the a priori estimates for the cscK equation on a compact manifold, and how to use these estimates to obtain existence when the associat...
The vanishing of the fundamental gap of convex domains in hyperbolic n-space

In the third and fourth talks at the ISU geometric analysis seminar, Professor Xuan Hien Nguyen discussed some work on the difference between the lowest two eigenvalues of the Laplacian. This is the second of her talks. Abstract: For the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on convex domains in hyperbolic n-space (n ≥ 2), we prove that the product of the fundamental gap with the ...
The fundamental gap of horoconvex domains in hyperbolic space

In the third and fourth talks at the ISU geometric analysis seminar, Professor Xuan Hien Nguyen discussed some work on the difference between the lowest two eigenvalues of the Laplacian. This is the first of her talks. Abstract: In the first part of this two-part series of talks, we introduce the fundamental gap problem and its characteristics in hyperbolic space. We will spend some time recall...
Ricci flow converging to a round sphere
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
This depicts an approximation of the normalized Ricci flow as it converges to a round sphere. Since numerically approximating the Ricci flow is difficult, this visualization was obtained by considering the linearization of the flow at the round sphere. Doing so, it is possible to realize the flow as one-parameter family of graphs (in spherical coordinates) where the radius evolves by a linear r...
Geometric Flows on Complex Manifolds and Generalized Kahler-Ricci Solitons

In the second talk at the Iowa State Geometric Analysis seminar, Yury Ustinovsky discussed some work on pluriclosed flow and non-Kahler manifolds. Abstract: In the last decades geometric flows have been proved to be a powerful tool in the classification and uniformization problems in geometry and topology. Despite the wide range of applicability of the existing analytical methods, we are still ...
