Ever since I was a kid, I have always had a deep connection and love for the outdoors. Now as an adult, my day job keeps me confined to an office, but nature is always calling me. As soon as I can I'm outside looking for the next adventure. I also have a love for woodworking and learning how to create things using the old ways of only hand tools. Finally, when I can I escape to the wind on my motorcycle. I grew up around motorcycles and the motorcycle enthusiast community and have a deep respect for all things bike. I started this channel to show my adventures in any way I take them and to share my experiences with others. I hope you enjoy and welcome! - Matao

Living Full Time in a Van: A Tour of a Bedroom on Wheels- Van Conversion Tour
Just picked these up today thanks to the review!
I really like their flush cut saw.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have a mix of Bauer and Ryobi and even Ryobi is still too expensive for many of the things I would like to get. I just purchased a Bauer Miter Gauge with fence for my table saw. It is as good as the Incra and any other Miter gauge for about $100, and only cost me 49 plus tax and shipping $55. Lots of good tools at Harbor freight.
Make a video doing 4 projects that will earn money using the tools from this video only. I would be super interested in finding out how quickly one could recoup their small investment into these tools.
Hercules Power Tools
I went to Lowe's and got one of them handles like you screw into a brush or broom they are straight and solid it works great inside of mine the ones that are made out of wood and about 5 ft long
If u have to go cheap on a square, go for a speed square. Cheaply made combo squares dont typically stay accurate for very long. ALSO ditch the carving chisels or spring clamps and add a miter box
Those carving tools are about as sharp as a butter knife and about as hard as a piece of aluminum. The only things here I would buy are the F-clamps and other clamps. Absolutely not on that marking gauge and anything that cuts besides a utility knife.
GO BLUE!
Man, I was feeling excessive with my 4 or 5!
Love the HF videos btw. Especially the ones where you improve a cheap tool
My HF has the older brand of the flush trim saw in the clearance section for a couple bucks less than the Pittsburg. I also noticed that Temu has what appears to be the exact same flush cut trim saw for like $4 with free shipping. I think I ordered it. Not sure. It was late. I’m wondering how much of the Harbor Freight stuff can be bought on Temu. I saw a pack of 50 of the microfiber 12x12 cloths for like $3. HF sells them 10 for $1 on sale. I won’t get the over the counter lifetime warranty on the Temu saw of course.
Coat the handle in flex seal. J.B. weld the tang inside the guard. You'll be good to go. It'll be near indestructible.
You must be really jacked with all those passes with the plane haha. I didnt catch all the videos when you were first building this bookcase. This has been a great video to have on while i am working. I need to get my handtool skills up to your level, there is something satisfying about just using hand tools on a project.
lol I edited out all the shots of me breathing like an old fat guy after each of those planing sessions. Thanks man! It's weird to hear people say my skills in hand tools are good still, I feel fall victim of feeling inferior to the RUclips world and what they can do, but its nice to get a compliment like that so thank you!
@@mataooutdoors If we all judged ourselves by what others were creating on youtube we would not get anywhere. That bookshelf legit looks like you bought it from somewhere, except its made from solid wood and will not fall apart! Cant wait to see your next project!
So true, thats what I try to remember. Thanks man!
Hey congrats on 1k subs dude!!
@ thank you! I owe some thanks you you for putting out that video as well. January was my biggest growth month for subs in a year.
Japanese style pull saws are designed to be used with *both* hands. Makes the cuts straighter. I bought the flush cut saw for a project where I wanted to cut off some dowels. BTW, you can use playing cards or a piece of package plastic between the saw & the work to prevent scratching the surface. Harbor Freight tools involve some trade-offs. Some of them need modding &/or tuning, like the chisels. Also, they aren't great but they work & the extra sharpening is good training. I also have the $6 hammer, the 3lb $10 drilling hammer, & brick, concrete, & mason's chisels for splitting wood. I have Harbor Freight hand screw clamps, c-clamps, f-style bar clamps, & spring clamps. I also have a great (very) small air compressor from the Harbor. I'm surprised to see how much of this stuff I have from HF & I have things not in the video.
Thanks for watching! Yeah the clamps are the best for sure, and you are right, for the price youre going to have to put some work in on them to get them working right.

Thanks most of my tools are harbor freight and I built everything with them people get stuck on name brand I'm not building a space ship I'm working with wood . Cave men used a bone and a rock to build stuff. Get a life stop making brand name people richer keep some of that money for yourself 😁
lol well said!
I would use 1/8” rubber as opposed to the plywood more cushion
Not a bad idea at all, probably adds more grid too to avoid slipping.
I picked up the plane double set they have because i thought i could use it for a scrub plane, but it's complete garbage. The blade still not stay in and the lever cap has a kidney shaped hole, but it's not designed properly, so when you tighten it, the screw just pushed it out out. The mouth is also so crooked and rough, it would take so much time to fix, it's really not worth it. The handles also have rough edges on the plastic seems. I tried to windsor one as well, and agree to just pass on it. It will end up just frustrating any beginner and unless you have a good understanding of how to tune a plane, it's not worth even making a scrub plane. I ended up getting the Tay Tools jack plane brand new for around $100 as my first plane and its great. If you don't have a plane and know how they are supposed to work. It's going to be difficult to but a used one that needs restoring. I also do agree with the harbor freight bar clamps, I got the 48" ones and cut a piece of fence picket to slide down the center and they work great. Most of the clamps go on sale, so I just pick up a few of whichever ones are currently on sale. The ratcheting trigger clamps work good enough, but are not as nice as most other brands, but having some of those help when you only have one hand. The only clamps i would not recommend are the pipe clamps, just invest in some Bessy or Jorgensen. Other than that, the saws all work fine, I have nice saws, but there isn't a huge difference. I think of saws as more of a consumable tool than most other tools, so i just chuck them when they get too dull or when I accidentally bend one.
Ugh I just bought the double set because Ive heard mixed reviews and I wanted to try it for myself just to see how bad it actually was. Havent filmed that one yet but look for it to come out soon.
@mataooutdoors I assume QC is bad, and I may have gotten a bad one, so hopefully, yours is at least somewhat functional. They didn't have another one to exchange with, so I just returned it. I just bought a set of the chisels for 10 bucks to check them out, though. I like your recommendations for the handles, and they're cheap enough that I won't feel bad if I hate them.
I have a draw almost full of these types of flashlights I find that the flashlights that have internal batteries really dont last that long and when the internal battery goes you have to buy the whole flashlight also in some cases you can replace the battery that the cost is almost sometimes even more than the flashlight itself its such a waster . Also, if the bulb goes it's the same thing
Good points. I usually lose mine before the battery goes bad, or one of the kids take it, never to be seen again.
I've been using this light since early 2023.. I use it at work every day, love laser for pointing stuff out at work(maintenance tech) also love the clip for a headlamp
Nice! It seems pretty solidly built to me, Im excited to see what other types they have too.
This is the Olight Arkfeld pro we have at home lol. Good overview, thanks for the options.
Thanks for watching!
Handy dandy tips. Thanks-
No problem! Thanks for watching.
i think these are great as introductory gear.. I mean face it, camping gear is expensive today and when a novice camper can get a knife, hatchet and folding saw that will get them through their overnight camps and introduce them to a new hobby for 35 bucks or whatever then i think thats a great purchase.
Well said! Anyone that is trying to get into camping or the outdoors this could be a good first try.

How do you feel about Amazon Basics wood plans? I would love to get into hand woodworking ( using hand tools) and don't have a very big budget. THANK YOU for any input. And just got to your channel and love the content.
Hey thank you! To be honest I haven't used Amazon basics hand planes before. Taking a quick peek at it I would have my doubts, the double thumb depth adjusters are usually more suited for a spokeshave than a plane. It will be hard to adjust the depth of cut, which you would need to do often. Im still on the hunt for an affordable and good hand plane, but honestly look around on like Facebook marketplace or something, you can usually find an old handplane that needs some love fairly cheap. Check out Rex Kruger's channel as well, we just launched an ebay style site just for handtools I think.
Do you have a preferred site there? Specifically comparing South Point and Pewabic. Only hesitation for South Point is I’ve heard it’s susceptible to big winds
Honestly yes South Point can get a bit breezy at times, but its still my preferred site. The other three are nice, and honestly larger than South Point, but something about that site feels cozy and secluded. Now if you are going with a group of people 1,2,or 3 are your best options, the sites are huge and have large beaches. I think 2 and three share a beach. South Point is in a bay though so the water is usually much calmer.
The one thing I think was missing was some way to make holes. I don’t know what varieties of hand or power drills are at HF, but I’m sure they must have something workable for cheap.
Yeah youre right. I know they have some fairly cheap battery powered or corded drills, I havent seen anything in store yet for hand drills though.
This is such a beautiful bookcase, and to build it using only Hand Tools is amazing. Great work, this will bring so many memories for your nephew for years to come.
Thanks man! I appreciate that.
Thank you for this video! ❤️ I appreciate it!!
No worries, we gotta look out for each other.
HF Japanese saw is a great first saw. The hardened teeth last a long time so beginners can learn to harness saws later if they stick with it. I probably use mine a much as any other saw I have. The others have all been sharpened at least twice since I bought the pull saw. I’ll have to check out the flush cut saw. Thanks. Marking gage, one of the first tools I ever made. They were expensive then, so I gave it a shot. Made from scrap woods and simple hardware I had on hand, Free is cheaper than HF. Of you screw out up, you can build another! It is a hobby. 🎉 Bevel gage was probably the next thing I made from a cheap plastic one. It was also a fun project. I just replaced the plastic fence with one o made from scrap wood. You do have to buy the plastic one first. I bought the smaller carving set. Upgraded to Schaaf but still use the HF ones often. HF clamps are great. Can’t beat them for the price. I don’t envision ever buying another Irwin or Pony. You don’t need hearing protection to use any of those tools or, special safety glasses. Many have lifetime warranties so if they don’t work right easy swap. Even if you eventually start using power tools, you will always value the skills you learn from using hand tools. You will often still need them to clean up and tweak power to work. One shaving with a well tuned hand plane is much easier than setting your table saw to shave 1/64” to make that sweet joint.
Very well said, thank you!
This is exactly how I started out and I still have and use most of it 5 years later so its not total garbage stuff
I reach for the bench chisels all the time. They are my go too
menards is a good place to get affordable tools also, If you have one near you
I do have one fairly close to me, I havent bought any tools from them yet but will give them a try
Also, you can find a lot of these tools nowadays at flea markets that are USA made, that are still in great working condition, Harbour Freight is a good choice also.
You are right, flea markets are a great source for older tools!
This is a great video, we did that same trip just a few weeks before you in June. I now love the Dakota's, though i think i prefer North Dakota over South, maybe its because there are less people haha. Cant wait to see future trips, i know my kids love getting out and taking our camper places. Seems to be the only way i can get them outside sometimes.
Hey thank you! Less people does sound better lol.
I never think to look at the handsaws there. I’ll have to take a look next time. I have a whole heap of the f-clamps. Best little clamps around for the price.
Yeah their clamps are great for the price for sure.
I had a feeling this was going to be a gift for someone. Congratulations on becoming an uncle! That kids got a really awesome bookcase that they'll hopefully hold on to for a long time.
@jackdavis8517 Thanks man!!

People are just full of excuses, anyone you really wants to do woodworking will find a way without spending $$$$$ this day and age its so easy to find good deals on marketplace etc , if you really want to do it its not that hard to get into the hobby
Exactly! So many ways to get into it. Maybe its just fear for some folks.
Bingo! My first table saw was $15. Old craftsman cast iron belt drive from 70s-80s. Put an after market fence on it I found for $40 and that thing was a beast! My 2nd was completely free because I found it in a pile of scrap metal someone was asking to be hauled off. Was a 1950s cast iron craftsman. I still regret selling that one. Both took time to get back to working order but 85% of it was just basic cleaning/ rust removal
Icon is a high quality brand its not China made its Taiwan made big difference
Very true!
Most of those tools they ask companies to give them for free. And surprisingly they get them
OH I did not know that. I wonder why they would do that? Maybe to push more expensive tools?
Love HF! I have made good use of their ITC membership and 30% off coupon deals.
Same!
It's all in what you can afford and/or prefer. Why buy a Filson flannel shirt 100% 24 oz wool made in the USA when you can buy a see through spandex flannel from walmart made in China? They're both flannels, Wal-Mart hires usa employees.
true
I wonder if this better or their Riselite chair
So far its one of my favorites from them. Seems way stronger than previous models.
It really turns out to be just a Pocket Kinfe if the clip won't open to put it on your belt. And the clip really seems to small to fit a regular size belt, will find out if I can ever get it to open up enough to go onto my belt.
Yeah the belt clip is a little tight, If I had to criticize I would make it an inch longer to get better flex out of it.
I think when the product is finished 17:18 it’s gonna be a work of art
Thanks Jimmy Boy!
My question is how much does all those clamps cost? Is it more than the bookcase itself?
lol about $14 each
Nice job on the bookcase merry Christmas from Jimmy boy
Thank you sir and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
