Christmas Carols. Pianist David Ashton - Welte Mignon Word Roll C-6136
Christmas Carols (Piano) Played by David Ashton. Original Welte Mignon Word Roll C-6136.
Played on a 1928 Welte Mignon grand piano s/n 71884. This piano uses an "Original Welte" expression action, electric turbine pump, and the spool box is above the keys like a Duo Art piano instead of being mounted in a drawer under the key bed as most Weltes are. New strings, original hammers. The stack ("brains") of this automatic reproducing piano is divided in about half - the bass section (43 notes, C1- F#4) and the treble section (37 notes, G4-G7), each section's expression being controlled separately. Best if listening with quality powered speakers or noise cancelling headphones.

We actually held onto these pianos for years and years. We had disassembled tons of pianos in the past and boxed up useful parts. At a certain point, I don't need any more parts. These pianos all have broken strings, cracked soundboards, peeling veneer, broken frames, missing case parts, missing actions, etc. We did everything we could to find a useful home for these pianos. Please, oil that squeaky thing
funny! I like it ❤😂
Nice positive mood tune!
This roll is one of my favorites for watching the vacuum gauges. The expression is so much easier to hear in person. It seems funny too me that the manufacturer cut the hammer lift rail off on this piano at A5 (why not rail all 88 notes) but it is very affective. I should have extended it while I had it in the shop.
Jack Ward plays very nice here! Thanks for uploading this! The Welte pnaumatic recording system was really far ahead at its time, it allows us to listen a pianist playing decades ago almostt as realistic as if he plays now! A special feature was the dynamic recording, meaning that the velocity of every keystroke was recorded somehow, but unfortunately non of these recording machines survived th second Wordwar, and no drawings too. So this recording technology is lost forever. Fortunately we can enjoy the piano rolls by playback on a apropriate playerpiano as yours.
Yes, I love these Welte rolls. An MMDigest contributor and great proponent of steam car technology, Karl Peterson, was visiting in the shop this summer. I think he would love to recreate the Welte Mignon recording system - Ink auto brushes fanning paper and lots of mercury are involved. There are only so many hours in a day and even the most energetic and sharp minds can't seem to get it all done but I guess it's possible. This might seem really lame but I thought since mom died that we'd never figure out how to recreate the recipe she used to make caramel dumplings for us kids in the 60s and 70s. 50 years later, I finally did it!. They're so good :)
@@pianosnthings Yes, its true: if we dont have the Original, we can still recerate something very similar. The same with Notre Dame in Paris. It is not the same as before the fire, but it looks nice and shiny, and it was already time to clean it ;-)
Neat
Very nice arrangement and interpretation. Thanks!
I agree -;)
Need a copy of this roll? I recorded a lot of the word rolls on "soft" expression setting. The piano is delivered back to client now (I need one of my own) but I wish I would have recorded this roll at full expression.
Dang always a shame to see an instrument go.... but if it's from the 1950s or later then by heck I don't care let 'er go down in a bang! :D
Wonderful tune! These original Weltes sound so much better than the AMR recuts!
Hey there. I just played this tune on gmas George Steck Studio but my playing isn't at par with Vee Lawnhurst :) Aren't recuts supposed to be exact copies of the original? You'd think that any changes to a recut would be to adjust sustain pedal or clean up a couple of problems to improve the cut.
@@pianosnthings Yeah but AMR during recutting didn't use the masters correctly and introduced major chord roughness and other nuisances into the new rolls (which got subsequently scanned and soiled the pool of scans).
this is the kind of video to get recommended to the whole world like 11 years later and blow up
yup
Thank you for sharing this gem from the past!
This is the only roll that I have 2 of. They're both 1924 rolls. Do you need one for a Welte piano?
that's nice
Yea man - fixed!
The Welte dynamic recording process most likely occurred in the following way. For each key, there were not one, but two sets of electrical contacts, operating at different times and positions during the playing of the particular note. One contact set, the metal rod and mercury described above, operated immediately the key was struck, and the other, a fine wire contact at the back of the piano action, was not made until the hammer had more or less reached the piano string. The first contact triggered a pair of small electro-pneumatic valves, of a sort commonly found in Welte organs of the time, and these did two things: the first valve operated a pneumatic mechanism which marked a note line on the master roll, and the second caused suction to pass between a pair of small pneumatic motors, of roughly the same size as the note pneumatics on the early Welte-Mignon playback mechanism. At rest, when the recording machine was not in operation, both pneumatics of each pair were held open by springs, but in use, when no note was playing, one pneumatic was fully open, and the other fully closed by suction, a position equivalent to the loudest fortissimo that could be measured. As soon as the first electrical contact was made, the two pneumatics began to reverse their state, through one or more carefully adjusted small orifices, similar to, but a little larger than the 'bleed holes' found in normal player pianos, with the open pneumatic being gradually evacuated, and the closed pneumatic gradually opening. Over the time interval necessary to move the key slowly enough to produce the quietest possible pianissimo, the state of the two pneumatics would completely reverse, with other dynamic levels being reflected by smoothly varying intermediate positions When the second contact, at the back of the piano action, came into operation as the note began to sound, another set of electro-pneumatic valves was triggered, which also had two functions. Firstly, it inhibited any further change in the position of the dynamic capture pneumatics, which therefore mirrored the dynamic force with which the particular note had been played. But this individual note dynamic then had to be amalgamated with the dynamics from any other notes being played, and this was done by allowing both pneumatics of the pair to briefly pass whatever suction remained in them to a secondary pneumatic pair, of the same capacity, though not necessarily the same dimensions, as the first. Both pneumatics of this secondary pair were normally fully opened by springs, but on their being closed by suction, small arms fixed to their moving surfaces potentially came into contact with the two blades of a light and rigid cylindrical rotor, which thereby rotated to a position reflecting the average dynamic of all notes playing in either the bass or treble section of the recording piano. As soon as the transfer of suction had taken place, and the rotor had been moved accordingly, the secondary pneumatic pair opened again, and the primary pair was reset to its potential fortissimo state. Located at the end of each dynamic rotor was a double registering pneumatic with a movable centre board, something like one of the component pneumatics on the roll motors of late Aeolian push-up Pianolas, and the two mechanisms were connected by means of a slide valve, attached to the centre board of the pneumatic. If the rotor slowly moved one surface of the slide valve in either direction, it uncovered a single port, which caused a fixed length of either the crescendo or decrescendo dynamic coding to be marked on the master roll. At the same time, it caused one side of the double pneumatic to be gradually evacuated, thereby rotating the other surface of the slide valve until the port closed again. At this point, however, and assuming the rotor had not moved its position further, the double pneumatic continued to operate slowly, until the corresponding port at the other extremity of the slide valve was opened. The opposing dynamic coding would then be marked on the roll, and the double pneumatic would reverse its direction. In this way, the dynamic coding on the master roll could be made to hover, albeit rather slowly, at any dynamic level. However, the Welte dynamic control system also allowed for accents of considerable subtlety. On the slide valve there were two further ports, only uncovered if the dynamic rotor changed its position substantially. The uncovering of either of these inner ports would cause the marking of a forzando or forzando piano trace on the master roll, but only for as long as the port remained open. At the same time, it would cause the appropriate side of the double pneumatic to be evacuated quickly, thereby closing off the open port. A further feature of the double regulators was a connection to marking pens at the sides of the master roll, allowing two oscillating traces to be printed in synchronism with the variations in dynamic levels. Such a trace can clearly be seen on the rather grainy photograph of the original master for Welte-Mignon roll 4119, "Moment Exotique", by Vladimir Horowitz, which is taken from a book entitled Reproducing Pianos Past and Present, by Kent Holliday, published in 1989 by the Edward Mellen Press. This master roll is the only original Welte-Mignon master known to have survived beyond the Second World War. Unfortunately, although it was in Austin, Texas, in the 1980s when this photograph was taken, since the credits in the book confirm this location, all trace of it has now disappeared. see: www.pianola.org/reproducing/reproducing_welte.cfm
An amazing chronicle. Thank you. For some of these more simple folk tune word rolls, I set the piano's expression to "soft" which subdues the amount of expression to a lesser range than normal.
So cool!
They say that some rolls leave out some notes the entire length of the roll. I haven't yet seen one of those.
The Welte arrangements of tunes that I know from standard rolls and other reproducing brands are always so refreshing to listen to!
Sounds like you're having a good day. I love most of these Welte arrangements. There are some classical pieces that make me think there's something wrong with my piano when every cord has one note of the chord that plays ahead or behind the cord like the pianist in the 20s had to do that for emphasis or style.
@@pianosnthings Ha yeah they had to make compromises for accenting notes in chords and stuff though there was also a good deal of slop in those recordings and the AMR recuts are particularly terrible in terms of precision in chord cutting.
Is this an original Welte cut? Or is it one of those ghastly AMR recuts?
Not AMR. Here is the original recording. I didn't notice the plugged notes until later. This is the only Welte roll I have with "bad chads" ruclips.net/video/TypsBawN3r4/видео.html
@@pianosnthings Hmm that's interesting that Welte's punch didn't get all the way through. Probably a punch starting to get dull.
you can almost hear the composer struggling to write something
These old rolls haven't been played for 50 years. Many of them had to be straightened a couple of times for tracking and then I could record them. It sounds like the roll veers off track a couple of times on this roll. But you're right, a lot people just want a simple melody and this composition struggles to do that.
I played this for hymns of thanksgiving years ago
Wonderful experience to share good music and your talents with the community. This roll was one of the first we recorded from the Welte cabinet. It is the only note that had faulty holes (hanging chads) at F4 all the way through the song. The roll motor timing was not complete and expression was being adjusted with these tunes :) I recorded a video earlier from this song that shows those plugged holes for note F4 being punched. Ok. Just published the "Hanging Chads" vid. ruclips.net/video/u_Lki7eet7w/видео.html
My friend Rowan Belt made an arrangement of this same tune, it's fantastic!
Amazing mechanism!

A passion of mine since for almost ever :) This music makes me feel younger. Thanks for watching.
Very stimulating to see and hear!
So glad to hear.
This piano really sings!
Just checked out your channel. You've recorded some amazing instruments. Is your house like a museum?
FANTASTIC! Can't wait to see more.
Thank you for watching.
I love this roll, arguably the best known Vee Lawnhurst Welte title other than Changes!
I see the Garrick Gaities digital scan that you published on your channel. I like the tehno scan option. ruclips.net/video/LRoGAdJBB0A/видео.html. It is that crisp clear HQ digital audio tone that all piano owners whish they get from their accoustic pianos for a RUclips recording. They sound so different when you're standing in front of them than they do in the recording no matter how hard you try.
@@pianosnthings Yeah, I used a keyboard for the sound on that video so its crisp
I have my doubts that Muriel Pollock had anything to do with that roll. I suspect Milne recorded this one. It's consistent with all of his other rolls from the same period with arranging techniques, ornamentation and patterns all screaming his name xD
This is not an original 1920s roll. You might be right. Whoever labeled this Harold Powell recut may have been looking at the wrong line when they typed the name onto the label. 🤔
@@pianosnthings Hmm possibly. I can't remember if I had any other rolls by Pollock that sounded like Milne but I think I might. It's tough to say with how many pseudonyms and collaborations there were! Milne did a bunch of rolls under Pauline Alpert's name which are blatantly his arrangements even though Pauline was recording for DA at the same time 😂

There, are my medley titles right? You did that so fast. Good job! It took me 2 hours to find the Bella Figlia title because I'd heard the tune but couldn't put a name to it. lol I could find the Welte roll no and title but no contents list. Love these songs. Wish this piano had new hammers. This piano sounds much better on my big shop speakers than on this ancient laptop. I speak Italian from my late 70s days in Sicily. It's fun that you translated titles. Thanks. Do you have this song roll?
@@pianosnthings Yes those are the aria titles. I went to music school so am familiar with many pieces. Yes it sounds like it could use new hammers but it is delightful as you have restored it. It has a slightly 19th sound with the light hammers. My Welte-Mignon in an A.B.Chase is in the works to be restored as soon as I get to it. I have shared your great piano with many others. I have many hundreds of Welte-Mignon rolls. I have several on ebay right now too.
@@RobinPratt AB Chase has always been one of my favorite brand names. Ivers & Pond is another one. In 2006 I rebuilt an upright AB Chase with hinged spool box and I believe's its under key bed player action unlatched and hinged out on big hinges on left side of knee panel. Fun!

Seems you might be involved with All Saints Presb. (do I have you mixed up with someone else?) I have worked with All Saints Boise and Meridian, ID for years - a witness to some great dedication. Love those guys. I retired piano tuning about 4 years ago and retired most of my piano moving this year at age 66.

Nice tune!
This is a tune I hadn't heard before. I recorded most of my Welte rolls with this rebuild before I delivered it back to client so I could tell what was on the rolls I have. I already have 3 Ampicos and 2 Duo Arts. But seems if I'm going to be like some of the "greats" out there, I need one of each. I'll find a Welte. I think Ralph Nielson just got his running. Greg Coen is another one with a house full of instruments. His Welte is vertical.
Howard Lutter played "Nola" very nicely!
Do you think most people like it upbeat or little slower?
It is too natural and atificial at the same time, and this makes it beautiful.
It would seem as though the algorithm has been blessing me with awesome videos today (such as this one)!
"swim the deepest river... climb the highest mountain" ahhhh 😊
Harry Perella isn't as popular of a Welte artist as say Vee Lawnhurst or Howard Lutter but hell he was every bit as good!
There can be a noticeable difference in the various pianist's renditions. I see that from other RUclipsr's recordings. I only have about 100 Welte rolls. And now I don't have a piano to play them on unless I run across town to record at the clients home.
@@pianosnthings Ah darn xD Ah well, I imagine another Welte will make its way into your shop though!
Ah the treble is so clean! I wish more pianos had the capability to play such a clear and laser like attack!
This is clarity! No computers, furnaces, pumps or wind motors kerlunking. 🙂Just pure piano. Thanks for sharing your talent. ruclips.net/video/XD1BaE5uJR0/видео.html

Wow! This sounds great!
It does indeed!
Cute title lol
these piano rolls are useful in giving us a sense of tempo control and modulation--contrary to the suggestion in the headnote there is no difference in this video between RH and LH volume; both are equal and so more of an insult than anything else to lhevinne's historically world-class pianism...doesn't matter; there is ample recorded documentation of that pianism along with rosina's--these piano rolls are curiosities, some value, mostly rude jokes

Just wonderful. thank you!
Nice Melody, fitting well to the title!
I am enjoying your videos. However you are playing them a bit to fast. Slow your tempos down just a bit! Thanks for sharing!
I do have to catch myself that way. In the 80 recordings I made with this piano before delivering it back to client I had to hold 6 or 7 from being published because they were uncomfortably fast even for me. I sent a cd to my parents and felt like I had to record every song both in my "dance" speed and their "sing" speed. Ha Ha.
Love it. This song always reminds me of Momma Cass!
Love it!!! What make of piano???
