হযরত আদম আলায়হিস্ সালাম একাধারে মানবজাতির আদি পিতা, এই পৃথিবীতে আল্লাহ তাআলার প্রেরিত খলীফা বা প্রতিনিধি এবং প্রথম নবী ও রাসূল। মানবজাতির এবং নবুওয়াত ও রিসালাতের সূচনা হয় তাহার মাধ্যমে। তাঁহার বংশধর হিসাবেই মানুষকে আরবী, উর্দু, ফার্সী প্রভৃতি ভাষায় ‘আদমী নামে অভিহিত করা হইয়া থাকে।
নবী-রাসূলগণ যেহেতু শিষ্টাচার ও সভ্যতারই পয়গামবাহক, তাই আদম (আ)-কে মানব সভ্যতারও পথিকৃতরূপে অভিহিত করা অত্যন্ত যুক্তিসঙ্গত।
