At 5 hours 17 minutes, it's definitively a "long-ass" film. Today, we look at this very Italian film and the oddities that lie within.

Nobuhiko Obayashi Retrospective / Review - 1984-1987 - The Early Golden Era
I have to disagree that kids are stupid today; they always were, but now we are just more exposed to things because of the internet. Of course, there is more brainrot and slop, and our overall mental health is declining, but let’s not be such doomers. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) your main point can be summed up as a lack of beauty and care given to everything in today’s world. Back then, most things were handmade, but now they’re produced in sweatshops in China, lacking the human touch. but there is still beauty out there, hidden beneath the SLOP. 'Internet art' has moved me much more than any other I've seen, maybe because I’m a 2000s kid and grew up online. I don’t think the answer is to try to restore things to how they were in the past-that’s impossible. We need to make our current world a better place by creating art and critiquing the mass production of slpo content. But going offline isn’t the answer; it’s already impossible-I’ve tried... sory for bad england
Thanks for your thoughts. Your English is good, and I agree with most of what you say. As a correction, I definitely don't think kids are stupid today. They are as smart as ever (and their generation is better than those that came before in many aspects). It's more that I feel bad for them that the content they attach to online is really shallow/brainrot/low-effort. The content is purposefully designed to waste time and result in a quick reaction. As you say, internet art is great, I'm more just talking about the mainstream slop which the algorithm feeds everyone. I could have been more clear with my point haha. That's my bad.
@@amagi_dude2455 Its ok. Its a really cool video. I agree for example that previous generatitons had much more fantastic cartoons
Comparing partisan Italian communism to what happened in China or Cambodia is simply being clueless on the matter. You can groan about it, but understand you're doing it out of ignorance.
it's not a wonder that this movie got mixed reviews and isn't mentioned today. it's an HOUR LONGER than once upon a time in america!
i watched it in 2012 and it was a slog to get through. and i generally like long movies, and bertolucci.
So much to explore here. Thanks for taking the time to introduce these!
Nice review this is definitely a movie I'm curious about this film
The movie has propaganda elements in it much like your bland review of it. 😊
Maybe you should stick to Chris Stuckmann or Jeremy Jahns Marvel reviews ;)
Under 10 minutes for a review of Bertolucci's masterpiece Novecento. That can only be stupid. And that's how it was. Not the slightest idea about the structure of the film, no idea about the historical background, no idea about Italy and Italians. But like the dumbest Republican, they talk about communism without understanding the slightest context. It's not communism that kills, it's the conservative freaks who cover any ideological cloak that is useful to them. Stalin or Trump. There is no difference. Both stock conservative criminals, highly criminal fascists who embody only one thing, the conservative malignant cancer of the world. The ultimate evil.
Ah yes I will always remember the bizarre experience of watching this epic! I actually liked most of the first 1hr 45 mins despite having some unnecessary stuff in there, the music was great and the narrative was overall good I found. But then it started to very quickly go off the rails as we exited the childhood era. I was finding I was completely disconnected with the narrative by the time "part one" had ended. it has characters who did not interact in a natural or realistic way. The film became so theatrical that it lost authenticity. People literally marching around making statements in such a basic way and weirdly talking to the camera at times. the error lies in the script and the way the film is shaped, as some of the performances are fine. It left me completely cold by the end and the ending is pretty hilarious! I really love Epics, I will seek them out to purposely immerse myself in a long film as it can often be a more moving and satisfying experience. But this was very sad. Over 5 hours of mostly boring, random, indulgent storytelling was not for me. I didn't appreciate the ways animals were treated and there were littered throughout, some very strange moments too.
Bertolucci's operatic masterpiece. IMHO, quite simply, the greatest movie ever made. Yes. All 317 minutes, uncut.
The way you describe film is extremely pragmatic, as if technical, whether acting or the filmmaking part has a overbaring purpose of fullfilling a certain quality, if it doesn’t you label it as weird. Please give me an example of what a standard movie experience is, so your subjective perspective has some context, if you don’t you risk being marginalized with your opinions and baseless. But kudos that you chose to talk about Novecento.
When I labelled something as 'weird' I didn't mean 'bad'. 'weird' for me is the same as 'unusual' or 'not normal', and I stated it was weird (not like a regular film) because of it's Italian-ness and it's heavy use of communism (which I gave examples of both in the video). If you want to compare it to a normal film, I don't see Thor wearing a hat of frogs and I don't see Doctor Strange calling Spiderman "Regina Queen of the b****". But maybe in the next Avengers that would happen
It’s been a couple years of RUclips and I still don’t know how to go back and check comments. I just love this young man and his content. I have sons around the same age.
I absolutely love the fact that at the beginning we think 'oh my, why are you stabbing those poor people with pitchforks?' and after 5 hours it's like 'oh yeah, that's why' 😅
the great leap forward was not "finishing in China as this film was being made" lmao. the GLF was over by like 1962, (and the historically famine-laden China has subsequently had zero famines)
Guess he could have mentioned the Cultural Revolution instead. That was still wrapping up in 1976.
Good movie although the second half was tough even with English subtitles. De Niro tried to stay neutral to both the Fascists and the Communists but ended up making his life worst from himself. Congratulations on whoever watched the entire thing
I appreciate that anyone gives a shit about this film.
Good movie but the Bertolucci could have made it a lot shorter and definitely rated R
06:53 what is the song playing in the bar scene?

@@bilginylmaz hi , I Googled " Rez" but I still do not understand what you mean. Can I get some information? Thank you
@@francinegryspeerdt18 Hi, A Turkish expression meaning reservation. To make the question I asked stand out. ( I am not speak English. There may be some translation errors because I translated it from translate )
It would be from a Japanese record I own. Not sure which. It's my weird way to avoid copyright detection
Pretty good look at some of his most popular movies. I'm coming up on 60 films I've seen, and it's hard to pick a favorite. It would be cool to see a closer look at his earlier experimental shorts, as those are really essential for understanding his particular aesthetic (he seems to return to a lot of his early aesthetic motivations later on in his career). I gotta disagree on the Kindaichi rating. A lot of it is rooted in Japanese pop culture of the time (including many of Obayashi's own CMs), so it can be impenetrable at times though.
Love the trolley problem concept
This has been right under everyone’s nose the whole time!
Nice to see more reviews of this.
Good stuff, I wasn’t ready to see those feet in shit tho 😂
Imagine a lifetime of being doomed to entertain others, but never yourself...
I know it's been a year, but do you have any plans to finish this series? Videos like this on Obayashi are few and far between
Toy story 2 birdman fantastic mr fox west side story arent on that list a crime 😅
I think it comes down to poor planning. All the videos I watched seem to be in the warmer months, probably the optimum time to do this trip.
Teletubbies walked so Nicki Minach could run. I mean look at those thicc a$$.
haha i really enjoyed ur dry narrative style :) i cant quite tell how much ur trolling with regard to the difficulty. i cycled the full length in january and winds but it poured the whole way - so was wet and cold. wasnt that bad though :P ur journey sounded like the movie script for shackleton's antarctica expedition - glad u made it :)
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video. Maybe I was subconsciously going for the Shackelton vibe haha. The trip itself was really terrifying, that was no joke. I spoke to three people I know who went to Japan during that January holiday and they agree the winds on those two days were unusually batsh*t insane.
@@amagi_dude2455 ohhh ok. yea the wind factor can def make the temp feel even colder :)
How was the trip? I've booked my flight already. Any tip for me?
Amazing trip. I will do another video at some point about it

Have you seen any of the films of Abbas Kiarostami at all? (If so, which one is your favourite work?)
Through the Olive Trees was interesting. I rented the VHS tape from my library about 10 years ago, then borrowed my nan's VHS player to watch it.. Close-Up is the best of course. Definitely check out that one.
@@amagi_dude2455 Yep - seen both of those. Apparently Kiarostami’s Ten is also one of those controversial works - have you seen that one at all? (If so, how would you rate it?)
7:14 Where's that song from?
Flying Beans - The Catcher in the Sky (B2 - Dense Fog). It's on RUclips :)
Lol.
You a fan of Backstreet Boys or *NSYNC? (If so, which song do you like the most from them?)
I prefer Take That. Those boybands you mentioned are lacking a Jason Orange.
My lifelong quest for this question has brought me here.
Where did you get that theme song from "Futari"? When i watched the movie i loved it but couldn't find it anywhere
I actually can't remember. I would imagine it is a piano cover from RUclips somewhere.
You have letterboxd my man ?
Hey Andrew. My letterboxd is 'FilmExplorer'. It has been 5 years since I updated it last, so I'll add some more reviews soon.
0:23 who's that director ?
Letterboxd?
Why you didn't mentioned miss lonely 😢 my absurd fav
It's in the second video. One of my favorites too!
I found a hidden gem
you gotta have fun and let people have fun man. just because the people around you aren't interested in the same hobbies or movies doesn't make them stupid. don't be the snobby film head everyone is irritated by, be the cool film head that recommends the best movies. trust🙏
Thanks for your comment. I see where you are coming from. I'm not snobby irl. With friends and family, they could love Epic Movie or Sex and the City and I wouldn't be bothered. I still think it's different if they go to film school, study for 3 whole years and not care even remotely about cinema. No interest whatsoever. A film student should be interested in film. Most of them were lazy and chose it because it was easy and fun. There is a big difference when comparing the students from the Business school (mostly smart and hard working) and Film (mostly lazy and rude). I spent half of my time in the Business school so I can make that comparison. It's 1am haha. I hope that made sense.
@@amagi_dude2455 makes sense. I took a film appreciation course this semester and for the final assignment we had to write a screenplay. one kid said he wanted tom holland to direct his movie lol
@@bummerfriend What are they thinking? Tom Holland would be a better Boom Operator of course.
what were the two directors you said were for the godlike/weird cinephile? I couldn't understand and I really wanna see that movie with the elephant lol
Wojciech Has and Shuji Terayama. The movie with the elephant is the Hourglass Sanatorium. It's fun to just spend a week or two going through their filmographies, there's a lot of poetic, surreal and inspiring stuff there.
@@amagi_dude2455 ohhh shuji terayama! Pastoral is literally like top 10 of my favorite movies. definitely gotta check out wojciech tho

Great work Keep up the content
Director Nobuhiko Obayashi is well known as a film director, but he has also directed two TV dramas in the past. "可愛い悪魔" (1982) and "麗猫伝説" (1983). Both of them were aired on Tuesday Suspense Theater, and the one in 1983 film was a collaboration between Tsuburaya Productions and Nobuhiko Obayashi for the 100th broadcast. Due to the desire of those who watched it back then and those who watched it in later years, it will be released on DVD in 2018 and 2020, respectively, and director Nobuhiko Obayashi says he hopes you will watch it. And it is worth mentioning that you can watch "可愛い悪魔" with English translation included on YT!! 🖥
Are you hoping to do a video on Fellini’s films ranked at all?
Great channel, I feel like I found a gem here.
Thank you! Have a great day
I think that some of the shots look well-made, but each one could’ve lasted longer, couldn’t they? (Apparently the editing in a film is key, and a lot of Top Gun fans don’t pay attention to that, whilst that 1986 film’s poor editing is probably the main cause of my lack of enjoyment for that blockbuster film)
I missed your comment before, sorry about that! I think the editing in the film was fine. The editor certainly improved on the material the director gave him (random running shots that look stupid).
