Yeah mine boots with a red screen too. You'll need to have it set up this way if you want to dual boot it with Linux, though. Even then, it has not been easy to install a second operating system on this thing

Your Secure Boot is disabled or the Secure Boot Keys are not install. Boot into the UEFI and change it.

My pro surface 2 just started doing that after an update, now won't turn over to the log in screen... Just goes to red screen then the bios looking thing.... Frustrating as I've only had it a week.

I don't get why ppl hate Win 8. IT'S NO DIFF. JUST THE START BAR IS A SCREEN! Every thing ells is the same or better. See Video 40s in. Just pin what you use at the start. if you only use desk top. start button will Just switch between the desk top and start as normal. then just customise your program list. you only have to start typing it in start. often 2 letters will have it in view. if you use this. right click and pin to start. like win phone

fresh installs add to the end. buy using right click you can mas select and un-pin. it really is a neater start bar if you give it chance. but just forget about it being a UI, you don't have to use it as one. it's different but better. from desktop. I can press start. then only 1 click to programs and features. see 40s in. I'm fully non-touch and have only had a go that way on a mates tablet-laptop. but i'll give you. it's diff. but windows phone uses will get the UI almost instantly

Unfortunately there is much more shit to load on ios for ipad, this is why windows 8 boots faster.
