The withdrawal process was largely completed by early 1973, with all Australian troops returning home by 30 June 1973. Whitlam also abolished Conscription a couple of days after being elected.

Chifley was the Architect of the Snowy Mountain River Scheme, which was the beginning of the immigration intake of workers. These immigrant workers were automatic tax payers and consumers. If you claim it an unjust war how do you justify one country being invaded by another, South Vietnam, a country in its own right, was being invaded by another. National Serviceman, to use their correct title, did not have the option as to whether or not they were sent to Vietnam. Regarding compulsory overseas service quoting from the NAA (National Archives of Australia) “The Defence Act was amended in May 1965 to provide that conscripts could be obliged to serve overseas, and in March 1966, Prime Minister Holt announced that National Servicemen would be sent to Vietnam to fight in units of the Australian Regular Army. Posted by Alan Strom 'I Was Only 19' is an anti-war song. It's not a tribute to conscripted soldiers who were forced to fight. Their choice was to fight in an unjust War or go to Prison. When they returned home from Vietnam they were greeted at the airports by being spat on and being called 'baby killers' PTSD led many of them to commit suicide or become alienated from the people that loved them. In December 1972, the first two actions of the Gough Whitlam government were to 'Bring the troops home' from Vietnam and they abolished Conscription on 5th December 1972, which was 2 days after being elected. The withdrawal process was largely completed by early 1973 with all Australian troops returning home by 30 June. The following year, the United States did likewise. In 1975 North Vietnam defeated South Vietnam.

I am with the US Coast Guard and served in 2018 with the Aussies on the HMAS Adalade from Townsville to PNG, best trip ever! The Diggers where fantastic hosts!
