After watching this 2 movies, you'll never see action movies the same again. Another must watch if you love The Raid, The Night Comes for Us (different director, quality almost equal, more gorry) and The Big 4 (action comedy, fight coreography dank good).

Idk know too much about American remakes. But I think Oldboy 2013 is enough for me to realize that they’re unnecessary. And by an acclaimed director no less. If The Raid remake is good, cool. If not, I won’t be one bit surprised. The Raid duology is perhaps my all time favorite action series and they should be left as is. That aside, I’m excited for Gareth’s new movie Havoc which is supposed to be his foray back into action. Although I’d like to see him tackle something in the John Wick world, should he and Chad Stahelski see eye to eye on how they approach action films. But hey, Ballerina is being done by the director of the Underworld movies so, maybe? Great video btw, this was a fun watch. :) glad you enjoy these films as much as I do!

If I recall correctly, you referenced The Raid duology in one of your earlier videos. So, I decided to give it a watch. I thought the first film was excellent. Low budget, gritty and dirty and well within the realms of believability, considering the power that some of these organised gangs have. However, the second left me feeling exhausted and actually wishing it would hurry up and finish. Yes, the fight scenes were superbly choreographed and executed (I particularly enjoyed the mud fight scene in the prison exercise yard) and the characters were well defined, but overall it felt as if it had been written to attract a western audience. It pandered to the western expectation of an 'oriental' martial arts/supercop/thriller. Less is more, in my opinion, as we got with the first film. Still, without giving away spoilers, I do agree with you about the last line spoken. Perfect ending! A US remake? Ugh! I can't see any US studio making a film in which their heroic SWAT teams would be taken down so easily. They'd probably end the film with the 'hero' finding a way to blow the whole building whilst miraculously saving all the innocent residents, especially a young, single mother and her baby...unless they decide to go down the woke route with a STRONG FEMALE protagonist. Generally I don't bother with US remakes as it's rare they even understand the source material, but I did come across one low budget US remake of an Australian short film that was well done. 'The Perfect Host,' (2010) written and directed by Nicholas Tomnay (based on his original short film) is essentially a black comedy/thriller about a wounded robber on the run who cons his way into someone's house, only to slowly realise that his 'host' enjoys sadistic mind games. Starring David Hyde Pierce (brilliantly cast against type) as the host, and Clayne Crawford as the man on the run, it's delightfully perverse and oddly enjoyable. Sorry, very little blood letting though. Another film I recommend is 2LDK, (2003) directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi. Part of the 'Duel Project' (its partner film being 'Aragami: The Raging God of War', directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. Basically it's a supernatural samurai showdown). Both films were made after a bet - to see who could make the better film under certain restrictive rules: no more than three main characters, at least one of whom must die by the end; one month to write and prepare and one week to shoot. Low budget and roughly one hour in length. 2LDK follows one fatal evening in a flat, temporarily shared by two jealous actresses who both auditioned for the same role in a film titled 'Yakuza Wives.' As the evening wears on, their petty differences escalate from verbal insults into full-on violence...with a surprising twist at the end. It's available to view, alas only in 360p, on YT: ruclips.net/video/6wOlI3ZP3NI/видео.html Anyway, that's enough of my ramblings. Cheers.

I find myself rewatching the first Raid film the most for similar reasons, it's the most straight-forward and doesn’t drag on as much. The second film dragging on doesn’t bother me as much on subsequent viewings as it did back when I first saw the film, although it might’ve played a role in how exhausted I was after my first viewing lmao. A US Remake doesn’t really interest me that much either, especially because of how accessible/watchable the original films still are to this day. Might get stuck in development hell anyway lol. The Perfect Host seems familiar so I’m sure I’ve heard about it in the past but haven’t seen. Sounds like it has a great premise though that works as both a short film and feature film, seems appropriate that it doesn’t have much violence/bloodletting because after looking up information it seems like a film that’s meant to be more psychological rather than gory/in your face (but that’s just my assumption). I haven’t heard about 2LDK and Aragami on the other hand but the idea behind the creation of those films are really interesting and how they were made. Must’ve been challenging to film them in such a short amount of time but those restrictions and challenges sound like they might’ve resulted in films that are definitely very interesting or creative, it wouldn’t be the first time for sure.

Great video man! You have such a calm voice that really makes the video so much nicer to listen to haha. I just wanted to mention my biggest gripe with the film. Why, WHYYY did they arrive to Alcatraz with so many civilians!? They talk about wanting to save lives the whole movie, but then didn’t stop the public from going there, even after discovering that the infection was coming from there! I don’t remember them addressing it so idk if I’m just missing something?

Thanks, I appreciate it! And yeah, true, I didn't think about that hahaha. Maybe they were trying to stay undercover and didn't expect things to get as bad as they did. But undercover or not, it's still not the greatest idea to go there with a bunch of civilians, considering they knew there was an infection coming from there, lol.

I agree. FF8 was always my favorite. Even with some holes in the story it was still my favorite story. Squall always my favorite character. Don't get me wrong I love ff7 but I feel like it's kinda overrated nowadays. Plus everyone who loved cloud in advent children don't even realize his personality was squalls. In ff7 cloud was more outgoing and wanted to be a leader. Squall never did. In advent children cloud was exactly like Squalls personality. Everything about 8 will always be my favorite.

'The Man from Nowhere' is one of my favourite Korean action films - and believe me, I've watched a lot! Many of the points I would have raised are already covered in your review, but there's one aspect of the story that I've never seen discussed: Thanayong Wongtrakul's fascinating performance as the Thai gangster/hit man, Ramrowan. This is a man who, despite his profession, still has a core of humanity. Recall how, when So-mi discovers her mother being tortured, Ramrowan gently covers her eyes. He knows he can do nothing for the mother, but he can at least prevent the daughter from witnessing the full extent of the horror. Did Ramrowan perhaps witness something equally horrific when he was a child? This moment, for me at least, also marks the beginning of his personal journey of redemption through a repaying of a karmic debt; one that is cemented by So-mi's small act of compassion towards him, later in the film. From that moment onwards he is a dead man walking. So, when the final melee happens, Ramrowan initially stays out of the fight, holding back as he studies Tae-sik's deady proficiency with a knife as he dispatches one thug after another, but when Ramrowan finally commits to a one-on-one with Tae-sik he opens with an attack that has no chance of inflicting serious injury on Tae-sik, even if it does strike home. Ramrowan uses a Karambit, a claw-like knife that can have a single, double of even triple edged cutting blade. Look closely and you'll see that Ramrowan's karambit has a single edged blade (the inner side of the curve). So striking with the outer, blunt edge is pointless. He's immediately put himself at a disadvantage. Why? Well, he already knows that So-mi is safe (he saved her, after all), so he could have easily told Tae-sik this and walked away, but instead he commits to paying that karmic debt (presumably accrewed from a lifetime of violence), knowing that he cannot win against Tae-sik, who has the moral high-ground. There's also the basic human instinct to test himself, almost a perverted form of honour to fight the best of the best. That's why there's no shame in his eyes when he finally succumbs to Tae-sik's blade. He has lost to the better man and he accepts that. Anyway, that's my two cents worth. I could recommend dozens of great Korean thrillers/action films, but here are just a few you may like to consider: I Saw the Devil (2010). An NIS operative takes time off to hunt down the psychopathic murderer of his wife, but as his twisted game of catch and release continues and becomes ever more violent, he crosses the line and becomes a monster himself. Stars Lee Byung-hun and Choi Min-sik, so well worth watching. Cold Eyes (2013) A young, female detective joins an undercover surveillance team searching for the mastemind behind a series of specialised robberies. Has some good action sequences, my favourite being one short scene in which the female cop takes down a villain using only her mobile phone. Ouch! No Tears for The Dead (2014) A professional hitman, traumatised after accidentally killing a child, is sent to despatch the child's mother, but his reluctance to fulfil the contract leads to him being hunted whilst trying to keep the woman alive. Essentially a story of atonement for past sins, but with some fine action and fight scenes. Brutal in places! The Villainess (2017). A female assassin is captured by Korea's Intelligence Agency after a particularly savage and bloody hit, drugged and retrained to work for the state. She later learns that her former lover, a crime boss, was responsible for her father's death...and thus she goes on a highly personal rampage of revenge. The final confrontation in a bus (of all things) has got to be seen to be believed. The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil (2019). A cop and a hands-on crime boss team up to take down a sadistic serial killer. In my books, any film with Don Lee in it is worth watching. Lastly, I can't see the point in an American remake of 'The Man from Nowhere.' Hollywood would only screw it up with pointless car chases, explosions and disingenuous soul searching from the guilt ridden main character. Beside which, Luc Besson's 1994 film 'Léon: The Professional' was essentially an American film, despite being written and directed by a Frenchman, which covered much the same territory. Anyway, thanks for your video and apologies for this over long rant. Cheers.

Oh yeah, damn, I’m kicking myself rn for forgetting to mention Ramrowan hahaha. I always thought that character was really interesting, compared to the other antagonists who are very far removed from empathy and compassion, he still retains some of his humanity. Like you said, perhaps he saw something equally horrific when he was So-mi’s age, I get the vibe that maybe he didn’t want to become a gangster/hitman or get involved in a life of crime but ended up falling into that line of work somehow and is possibly trapped in that lifestyle. Also has a similar vibe to Tae-sik where he’s mostly quiet, communicates with his eyes, and it’s up to the audience to interpret what his thoughts might be. I remember when I saw this movie for the first time years ago, I wondered why Ramrowan didn’t just tell Tae-sik that So-mi was still alive and instead fought him, but with the way you put it about how he’s committing to paying his karmic debt it definitely makes a lot of sense and I really like that perspective a lot. Also never noticed how he uses the outer, blunt edge of the karambit during the fight, that’s a really good detail. I also agree on not seeing the point in an American remake, I’m still pretty sceptical about whether or not they’ll get it right lmao, especially with Hollywood’s track record of remaking foreign films. But personally I’m hoping for the best because development on the remake is being set in motion regardless of how I feel about it hahaha. Anyway, thanks for the film recommendations and your interesting thoughts! The Villainess has been on my list of films to watch for a long time and I’ve definitely heard of I Saw the Devil/No Tears for The Dead, but I’m not too familiar with Cold Eyes and The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil so I’ll make a note to check them out too.

@@aurumrevenant Thanks for your response. I have to admit that I have some stage fighting experience, having worked as an extra/walk on in a few films, though it's been some time since I last wielded a weapon. Of course stage fighting is far more 'dramatic' than real life combat - more for show - which is why I am impressed by the quality of skilfully choreographed combat we see in so many Korean action films. Those guys really throw themselves into it! I suggest taking a look at the 'making of' videos for The Man From Nowhere here on YT, to see how they break down each fight scene. There's a particular scene in which a knife flies off accidentally and comes very close to the cameraman! Anyway, my point is that I look closely at fight scenes and notice small details, such as the single bladed karambit. Well, we all need a hobby! Hahaha. If you don't mind streaming sites then you can try kissasian(dot)mx Replace the (dot) with an actual dot. YT tends to remove my posts when I include a full, off-site link to a streaming site. I tend to watch a streamed film first then, if I like it, I'll buy a hard copy. All the films I recommended can be found at kissasian. Lastly, I forgot to subscribe. Ooops! Remedied. Now I'm off to watch your review of 'Mirrormask.' A fascinating film indeed.

I loathe Leon. He is over-used and tired. Also, Vendetta is my favorite of the CGI films.

"I Saw the Devil" was badass. Allow me to recommend "My Girlfriend Is An Agent" (silly but fun) and the brilliant "A Company Man." I won't waste my time recommending my fave "Train To Busan" because I have a feeling you've already seen it at least twice. 😅

P.S. I found the "fear/terror" thing in "Infinite Darkness" hokey too--trying too hard to be profound and beating us over the head with a kind of clunkily worded concept. But... in a second viewing of it, I realized it was trying to drive home the whole reason Leon wouldn't release that chip and was willing to sacrifice his friendship with Claire. Just as Jason exposing the world to his affliction would spread/cultivate that "fear into terror," so would the evidence on that chip Leon now held in his possession. Since Jason/the Security Officer had been neutralized, there was no further need to expose the info ("spread the fear/cultivate it to terror").

I think "Infinite Darkness" was trying to bring a more serious, profound feel to the series. Instead of all action and silly quips, it was trying to delve more into the personality/growth and life/relationships of Leon beyond just a bioterror-fighting hero. It looked at his loyalty and career with the government (viewing Jason's actions as treason and refusing to help Jason against the govt, as well as watching Leon actually work WITH government officials--in a suit, nonetheless!), as well as a more real, everyday relationship with Claire (sharing professional opinion on the drawing and then at the end, unfortunately having the falling out with her). Sadly, I think two problems sunk this series: 1. It wasn't what we expected. Instead of the silly heroic posturing and quips, Leon (and the other characters for that matter!) was much more lowkey and realistic. The whole feel was more subdued and like an animated drama than the chaotic, action-horror ridiculousness of the other films, esp "Vendetta." 2. After going thru it thinking, "Wait, am I even watching an RE film?", it was suddenly like, "Huh? This is IT?!" It felt incomplete. It seemed like a choppily cut up movie that should have, in the end, had more to it. Though the issue with Jason was resolved with his death, the overarching situation was not. (What was the outcome of discovering this huge lab, or at least the ruins thereof? What did Leon end up doing with the evidence chip? Did Claire and Leon patch up their differences or was that seriously the end of their friendship? And along the more "simply human" side of Leon, seeing him really look confused, hurt, and lost while Claire walks away at the end--and not in that queue-the-mysterious-"off walks Ada into the mist yet again" music--how does he really deal with something like this? We already know not only from the scene with Chris in "Vendetta," but bf that from "Damnation"--and even way back in the RE2 OG storyline--that he's used drinking to deal with emotional pain and stress. How might this affect him?) So much was left unadressed, and I fear that "Death Island" will be the usual foray back into the one-dimemsional action-horror we expect, with the aftermath relegated to obscurity. I recognize that the video games--and maybe even the typical RE movies--aren't truly the place to explore such deep things, but ... I daresay the true beauty esp of RE4R is that they rather seamlessly brought together excellent gameplay (which is first and foremost the point of a gane, right?), while updating the feel but staying true to the orig, all the while providing fantastic story development and character exposition so they aren't just flat action heroes, but people we truly can start to feel for and "know." I just wish they could develop a cohesive movie series that would tie Leon's story (if not the entire RE lore!) all together with the action/cheekiness we have come to expect, but the realness we've come to also enjoy!

Definitely seemed like ID was trying to bring a more profound/serious feel to the series, I don't think I mind the idea tbh but it's a shame that the end result wasn’t more successful. I agree about the movie needing to have more to it though, maybe I would’ve had a more favourable reception towards it if they explored/expanded upon the storyline a little more and didn’t leave certain plot threads unresolved. That way it would feel more like a complete story. Especially because I doubt they’ll resolve those plot points in Death Island lol (although it would be nice if in Death Island, they at least acknowledge what happened between Leon & Claire). Also really loved the character development for Leon in RE4R too, especially with how they used his character arc to tie together the events of RE2 and RE4, connecting them in a more coherent and seamless way compared to the originals. Really cool idea for the writers to take into consideration how the events of Raccoon City would realistically affect him leading up to the events of RE4, recontextualizing RE4 into sort of a redemption story for Leon where he’s determined to make amends and finally save somebody for once. Would be great if we had a more cohesive movie series to tie the entirety of RE lore together. But at the very least, with all of these remakes/reimaginings, Capcom now has the opportunity to tie all of the games prior to 7 together in such a way. RE5 and RE6 remakes are going to be super interesting if they ever get made lol.

@@RandoLePerson well, whatever RE2R/RE4R was doing, I'm all for it as far as its character develpment/ storyline. I guess I don't know to what other properties being referred so I can't speak to how much was truly stolen. The fact is there is a very finite number of truly original, unique stories out there. Most are just variations upon a central theme and I have no doubt RE is no exception. To me, though, it is how those variations are not only placed but how they unfold that the real magic comes to life. RE2R and RE4R stands on it's own for managing to marry improved gameplay, excellent storytelling and character development, while updating/improving things and yet still paying faithful homage to the original. That, to me, is a masterpiece.
