I've been wondering lately if wearing all the hats in the publishing process makes for a better indie writer. It certainly forces me to learn new skills and do things outside of my comfort area, like getting on YT. Listening to a certain subset of tradpub authors - they really don't seem to appreciate each sale, the fans, or the process.

JD's Last Fanatics was an eye opener, and I have a lot of new avenues to explore now. I read Pulp Mindset as well and have Y Signal on the TBR. It's good to have a guy like JD shining a light on what happened to all these great stories. I started writing because I just couldn't find a good unsubverted played straight S&S tale. Good interview.

I don't hate Dracula, but I'm not a big fan. I recommend Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Bram Stoker stole quite a bit from that and it's done better. Last I heard Netflix removed Hemlock Grove last October, so I'm glad I also own the dvds. Did you know it was based on a book? It was originally titled The Wise Wolf by Brian McGreevy, it's good and quite a bit more disturbing!

It's crazy how stupid US people are... The casual racist incel vibe in this video says it all. Thanks god the publishing market is finally reading anything from minorities, we could discuss about how good these books are, but discussing the "quota" is actively trying to be dumb just to defend your conservative racist position so you don't feel bad about yourself. These 2 are probably pathetic writers if their opinions are so limited...

It's insane nowadays. Frankly, this is some grade A racism - saying you won't take work because you're not a person of color OR that you should have your race more present in your work. Yet it's promoted, celebrated even! Yet when someone (normally a white person) calls out these acts as horrible, they themselves are called racist. Talk about projection.

Had a friend in HS who was constantly berated by her black peers for hand out with us metal heads. You can easily figure out what they called her. It must have sucked being told to get into a "black lane" as determined by gods knows who. And here it is institutionalized. She was an amazing guitarist.

My god these videos deserve a hundred times the views. These are heartfelt conversations that resonate with me and I've sure would with hundreds of other indie creators. My current frustrations are along these lines. IRL takes over, esp as a dad and full time jobber... and when some free time is available I'm often mentally exhausted. And when I write and edit, I wonder if I'm "fresh" enough to do good work. There are all kinds of psychology involved here. In the end I just have to open the doc and have at it.

Yes we get lost in our own worlds. In very similar vein, authors need an editor who lets them know their descriptions fall short, or the plot twists or character actions are unclear. I already know what I'm writing, so my little Coles notes version works for me - but does it work for a reader.

A majority of the time, especially during the modern day, consumers don’t know what they need, that’s why the shelves are always absolutely packed with options. Modern day adults are almost dependent on options. You see it everywhere you go. Which is why no one that makes very specific things has a bigger presence. Such as Shoe repairmen. You seldomly see shoe repair shops anymore, because chances are it’s cheaper to just buy the exact same pair.

You’re not wrong in general. I honestly thought about the old Henry ford quote: “if I asked people what they want they’d have said a faster horse.” So I get the sentiment, but had ford had a faster horse he’d have sold like gangbusters. This particular quote is in relation to the media landscape where certain niches get overlooked by the corporate structure because they’re too small to bothered with by large multinationals but make sense in a boutique fashion. If there’s people screaming “I want this” if you have it and you’re not a dick, the sale should be easy.
