Craft - The Art of Making Cheddar
Craft is an ode to artisans who devote their lives to the treasures that are at the risk of being lost forever.
The fairytale background of England’s Somerset establishes the stage for its greatest performers: cheddar as an art and Tom Calver and his team as its artisans. The film follows the extraordinary journey of turning raw milk into cellar-aged cheddar, retracing every one of its steps along the way. Much more than a documentary about cheese, Craft captures the essence of artisanal tradition in its purest form.

Really enjoyed this video, great density of knowledge!🥰 I'd like to ask, where is the sound clip inserted at 2:27 seconds, "Light, camera, action!", taken from?

I'm glad you liked it! Oh sorry, I really don't remember where exactly it was from, but it must have been one of the films I covered in essay. Hopefully, another viewer will be able to help more!

Do you know why your video can't be translated automatically? My English listening is not good and I don’t have subtitles to watch, so sad

The wall clock is late 1990’s. The cop’s suit is from the same era. The phone chord is coiled, not from the supposed 40’s. The decor and art work on the office walls are of a late 20th century sensibility. Same for the apartment interior. Much too modern. The shot through the car rear window is definitely out of sync with the supposed era. Adding more as I see more. The window frames are painted white! Not a thing until the late sixties! Forties movies made use of the full frame. Here there’s just a lot of empty space. The takes are mostly medium close shots and much too long with little happening. Film noir was tightly edited. Long takes were rare. The dialog in forties movies were works of literature, here it’s too loose, long winded and much too self conscious. And the final shot of a reel to reel tape recorder! They weren’t invented in the forties and not commonly found until the late sixties. And it didn’t add anything to the story or mood. Sorry the production values don’t measure up and the dialog is probably just a first draft. Back to the drawing board guys. Next time use older lens to mimic the tight spaces of noir. Add long takes if they really serve a purpose. Modern lens are much too bright, especially with digital cameras. They kill the mood. And given the opportunity to induce tension and drama with exaggerated camera angles, sharply deployed shadows etc that German Expressionist art influenced early noir film makers you guys did ... what? You guys shot this like a boring TV day time soap. What a missed opportunity! Ho hum. BTW the hair stylist needs to go see more 40’s vintage films. These guys are totally not from the 40’s. They look too much like, well, 2017.

Hi David, I am so glad you picked up on all the Easter eggs we left for you. Thanks for taking the time to watch the film in so much detail. It was made four years ago by a group of film students with 0 budget and a passion for film noir. There was no intention to be 100% true to the 40s, otherwise we wouldn't have shot in a public area, as you can imagine. Good exercise though from your end.

@@joshtaroli7083 too bad because despite their effort (made possible by lots of money, time but little else) their instructor did not take the opportunity to instill creativity, art literacy and technical chops. All of which was absent in this project. My advice to the students - go to another school if you’re serious about making films. Start by watching and analyzing lots of films. Read up on filmmaking and film makers and I don’t mean about blockbuster and movies made for entertainment but the auteurs who made movies that had you thinking or feeling much more than just being distracted for 90 minutes.

@@davidlang1125 you’re throwing fire at the ocean. The fact that this film was uploaded four years ago, shows that the creators, at that time, did not mind the obvious flaws that you were so generous to point out. Everything happens within context and the students will have had their reason for choosing to ignore those facts, such as that it was their first film in a wide media course of which the subject film was 1 out of 11 courses and they simply enjoyed the task. Your giving textbook advice that is so ordinary that it fails to achieve its very purpose. The students went on to do exactly that, without receiving the advice four years ago, but through true intrinsic motivation, which they’ve only obtained after being allowed a certain ignorance and playfulness with this project. Receiving your advice back then might have put them off straight away rather than channeling their passion. You’re also looking at it with a tainted negativity, instead of appreciating the films that might have inspired this one. Films that were inspirational to many of the auteurs you speak of so fondly. My advice to you would be to lead through example, to build on positivity and to use criticisms as a tool of improvement.

I just watched Band of Outsiders for the first time in full. To watch this movie, you really need to be prepared as to what kind of movie this is. Luckily, I was prepared. I can imagine that the French cinema goers of 1964 weren't.
