Hippos to the left and right! Ep11
In Katavi National Park, and whilst small, it does have hippo, crocs and giraffe. Saw evidence of elephants but none cane in to sight.

Great trails today, some steep climbs around one of the many lakes here. Made it to the border and again, Cyanika, so by choosing a more remote one, the crossing was easy and quick. Crossed over to Uganda. It's a long way up to the Suam crossing but I'd highly recommend it. Empty and nice people. I can't imagine the chaos at the busier ones, it took me a couple hours here, literally just me, imagine if there were even 20 ahead! Not much after Suam so I had a dark ride on what was probably one of the more scenic roads round Mt Elgon. It also rained 😩

Hi, I’m interested in your app you are using to Nav Trails, I think you said Odemond, can you tell me the correct name to it, because I’m looking for an app for the same purpose. Thanks good videos, just before watched your videos when you were doing TET in France. Had my CRF 300 Rally for 4 months now love it and up grading it this year for next. Thank you.
OSMAND
OsmAnd+ costs a tenner. Worth it. Not the best to use daily but super good for following an imported gpx file like the TET. I use a Samsung 5 Active, old but stable
Thank you for your reply Jeff. Will check it out now.
just found your channel and I really like your down to earth videos. Is there one where you explain where you got the bike (ie bought it in South America vs imported it from the uK) as well as give some general advice about crossing borders, insurance coverage and overall cost ? Good luck with your next trip, looking forward to more videos.
Hi, thanks for the kind comments. No video explaining about that trips preparation but I am off to Africa next month so maybe I'll post one then. MotoFreight in Feltham shipped for me, very good. Costs around £1500 one way so not cheap. Taking your own bike has pros and cons, I like the satisfaction of preparing and riding my own, it would be cheaper to rent, but you never know what you''ll get. Borders are challenging but fun, there is one, No 42, that demonstrated border from Peru to Ecuador...it made me smile
Hi mate , was there a part number on the velocity stack. I want to send my ECU off to Maverick just wondering if you did ? An who you sent it with from the UK ?
Sorry for the delayed reply. The stack can be ordered from Maverick as well, details are on his site. As for shipping, I used DHL. Cheap and reliable.
Hello, can you advise about the long-term use of the stage 1 upgrade? How many miles have you done on the bike since fitting it? Any issues with the engine or other components that could be attributed to the ECU upgrade? Thanks.
100% for me. Nothing negative at all. I also fitted the CBR300 air intake rubber (see video). Also added 2 extra foam pre filters but still use the stock paper filter as a final. Doesn't make it a KTM350 but it goes better and rides well. A decent upgrade. I'd do it again
@@jeffwkirby Apologies for the additional question, but any MOT emission concerns following the modifications?
Hi, there are no emisions check on the bike here in the UK for an MOT, so no issue there.

TET is definitely not made for big trails. 🥵
Indeed, but they still keep coming. I ride an old Africa Twin, done similar to these in the past but the little Honda makes its more fun.

I find it surprising u can find somewhere without traffic in England. I'm in Top End of Austrslia.

Jeff did you have to take the exhaust header off to fit the crash bars. ? Also I have same yamato bash plate. Did you have to grind some off to fit bars. If I have to take the header off, I will have to buy new gaskets. Hoping I don't have too.
Hi, the header pipe stays in place and does not need to be removed, and bash plate requires no grinding. All fitted quite easily. Good luck!
@jeffwkirby Thanks Jeff you just made my day !
Nice front sprocket guard . Where did you get it please!
Bikerzbits in Thailand
I just purchased the same bars. Did u drop the bike at speed or just slow or just from a stopped position.? I haven't mounted mine yet wondering if you think they are a waste of time. Being too soft!
The crash bars are soft, but I'd still fit...its a relatively easy job. I've dropped the bike quite a few times over the last year (mostly slow) and they do fold up quite easily...but by the same token, they're easy to bend back - a piece of rope around a tree/post and you simply pull it back using the weight of the bike and a little leverage. My bracing appears to have worked but admittely it is a faff to get on and you need someone to weld for you...but they look good :)
@jeffwkirby Thank you for your reply. I guess now I have them. I will put them on. Thanks very much..!

My ECU from 550 didn't come with instructions and that plug. 🤔
If i recall you don't need any. Plug and play. On first restart just let it tick over and relearn itself. You don't need the jumper
@@jeffwkirby thank you.
I just did this modification tonight. Man that was a miserable experience. I had to put a lot of downward pressure on the throttle body and at the same time push up and forward on the air box then I had to put a bolt in the airbox mounting hole to keep the airbox in place while I push the CBR air boot onto the throttle body. Man what a pain in the ass! It took me an hour of pushing, turning, contorting, resting, grabbing a beer and trying again and again to get everything lined up. I finally got it, but man it would go so much smoother with someone putting the bolt in while you push the airbox and the throttle body. I only have two hands but you need three. While you have the bike tore apart you should block-off the pair valve, remove the evap canister/Air Injection solenoid and the Evap purge control valve. I weighed all that and it was 2 lbs of environmental garbage that is not necessary. I blocked off the pair valve with the 550 performance block-off plate. Installed the stage 1 ECU and the Yoshimura exhaust. I also removed the snorkel off the rear air box and installed the high flow reusable air filter by 550 performance. I definitely noticed a difference in my bike's top end speed and the acceleration from zero to 70 was faster. I'm not sure if all my effort and money was worth the small performance boost. It's not huge but you will notice better performance. With the RSC clutch lever, double-take mirrors, hand guards, crash guards, skid plate, Yoshimura full exhaust, Fancy decal kit, Yoshimura tail tidy, red anodized zeta foot pegs, Lithium Ion Antigravity battery, front and rear LED turn signals, tail luggage rack, race tek suspension, I have spent $4550 + bike $5400 = $9950. If I were to do it all over again I would have just bought the CRF500L and fixed cutting out issue with a tune. I did not enjoy that airbox modification.
Agree with all that you wrote. I did have help! As for the spend...the same for. Spent a fortune but I do enjoy the bike.
... I am getting ready to do the CBR intake mod and I also am not looking forward to it. I thought it was this video where the gap that fits onto/into the air box was widened to give the boot more play/space to be tilted down to fit w/o so much tension? I have watched so many videos on this I can't remember. . I received the Yoshimura RS4 full exhaust, 550 Stage 1, (91 octane). The DNA air filter and service kit comes from Europe and was stuck in customs for a while. Still haven't received it. Supposed to be here this week. . "While you have the bike tore apart you should block-off the pair valve, remove the evap canister/Air Injection solenoid and the Evap purge control valve." That makes me nervous not fully understanding all of it. I know Jake the Garden Snake did a video on it. Does removing all that really make a difference? Yeah, I'm a little concerned doing all this. I hope all this $$ and time is worth it. . Jeff.
@@240LTS good luck!
Are those red air filter tubes stock?
They are from a CRF1000 Africa Twin. I took out the stock snorkel, cut it in half, drilled a second hole in the airbox, and therefore had two inlets allowing me to place those filters on. I think its a gain...they clean easy and really protect the stock paper filters (which are cheap, have great air flow and are tight (fine) and worth keeping on). They come from Uniflow
I enjoyed your video but at the roughly 1:14 mark you mention "lots of rape". I feel compelled to ask....What the hell does that mean? :)
Ha ha...Rape seed...all the yellow crop, pressed to make veg oil. We were riding through the fields...ha ha ha...cheers
It’s only a small 300 , you can’t squeeze 35hp out of it
You can get 34 out of it with a 301 kit. ruclips.net/video/wwkH0yzRdbM/видео.htmlsi=AIjwFcAQ8g5Uf8hb
The factory tune is very lean, choked up for EPA. The ECU richen's up the fuel table and makes a more efficient fuel burn. Just like you would tune a two-stroke, no difference here. 550 ECU makes your engine run more efficiently. Hence why my MPG went up and my engine temps went down. 👍
It’s only a small 300 , you can’t squeeze 35hp out of it
looked like a great trip.
Thanks for watching, it was very good.
Hope your T150 is going well and has bedded in ok , I had my T160 out for a nice ride yesterday it was great . Cheers.
Thanks...not been out on it for a while, maybe this will inspire me :)
Im considering taking a crf300 rally to south america like you did. 2 questions: Did you replace the shock spring , if so; what are your recommendations for a specific shock type when rinding with soft luggage like you did? Also: How did you secure (lock) the bike , when leaving it while hiking or what not for a few hours... ?
Go for it! I used a YSS shock and ought the spring for my weight, they will advise you. Don't forget to add your luggage weight. For safety I just used a disc lock. As for the luggage it was fingers crossed. I never left it for days, had no issues but I did use a cover. I hope you make it 👍
Got a question, my rally has a vibration at 7500rpms, it feels like it coming off the frame, is that normal, I’ve watch some of videos and you was tacking way above that, stock Ecu and exhaust, but getting ready to upgrade ?
Nothing I've ever noticed...but there again I am rarely at 7500 revs!! Not a place I like my engine to be at. Good luck on the upgrade, they are worth it. 👌
Hi Jeff what was the turn around time from posting your ECU ?
Can't recall exactly but pretty quick, around 10 days from end to end I believe. 550 didn't hang around
What do you think of Graves Motorsports claim of 15% power gains from their exhaust system?
Personally never heard of them, but I'd be dubious of a claim like that...appears they have discovered a new gold!
@@jeffwkirby There’s a dyno test on their website. It make the bike more intriguing if true.
What octane fuel do you use with the Stage 1 upgrade. I bought a used Rally with the Stage 1 ECU and Yosimura exhaust and the previous owner told me he used 91 octane fuel. I can't find any reference for what octane is best.
Think they different values here in the UK. Fuels have RON values. Either 95 or 98, I use either and can't feel any difference.
Mate you need to change that filter out for a uni filter, the stage 1 ecu is tuned for that and the difference is crazy
Might give that a go. Thanks...
Nice, looks like fun!
Hi, how high is indle in cold start
Can't exactly recall, pretty similar to stock. Calms down as it warms. Throughly recommend though, it runs smoother at all points.

Yes I did, YSS and it is worth it. Probably went too light a spring but way better than standard
@@jeffwkirby did you do the front as well? I’m thinking about dropping one of those $100US Ktech replacement springs up there...
Used the very one, K-Tech for 75-95Kg (I am 72kg). You need to allow for kit, hence that weight.

Sorry, I really don't know. I downloaded all the trails and planned the day ahead as we got there, basically east of Paris going south towards Clermont Ferrand then west to Limoges and the north to Le Mans and then to Caens. If you are going I'd miss the northern ends...lots of fields and riding between crops, quite dull. The Loire area was good, also the north end of the Massif Central.
