1930 - 君が代 Kimigayo - Imperial Japanese Anthem
This is a 1930 recording of Kimigayo; then the anthem of the Empire of Japan. It remains the national anthem of Japan to this day. Although the melody was composed in 1880, the lyrics of the anthem stretch back a millennium to the Heian era.

It was the end of an era, those poor men that were sent away from their homes, and brought to the fields of Picardy and Flanders to their death. It was an unjust and hopeless conflict with a sense of morale being blurred and enforced by the higher ranks of society. Millions laid dead, be it shot, stabbed with a bayonet, or executed for not abiding by the law of staying loyal to their post. The Central Powers didn't win this war, nor the Entente did. The politicians won.

Recorded at a time when Britannia really did rule the waves. Albert Farrington probably sang this with the pride of the glorious Britain it was at the time, unlike today. Whenever this song is played today, it is usually just to harken back to a bygone era when "Britain was great", whatever that means.
