Welcome to the home of the revolutionary documentary production company. Equinox Films created two groundbreaking series that are used by thousands of universities around the world.
The Human Language Series Part 3: With and Without Words
Part Three of the Human Language Series: The Human Language Evolves discusses why chimps can’t talk and we can. How language must be a biological phenomenon. How the human Larynx “fell” and we acquired new vowels. How we inherited body language, gestures, and facial expressions from our animal past, but only we have the most human thing there is about being human.

Part Two of the Human Language Series, Acquiring the Human Language, asks: are children wrong when they say “he drived” and “two gooses?” How does anyone know what a word really means? Do we inherit grammar? Program two is about how children “acquire” language without seeming to be taught.

In Part One of the Human Language Series: Discovering the Human Language, Noam Chomsky asks, “You meet somebody, say, at a bus stop, and you start having a conversation. How do you do it?” How does anyone know what word to say next? Program one is about words, sentences, and something unique to our species: syntax.

this was when the world was still reasonable
A word is a sound or series of sounds that represents the thought of an object or idea.
lol
this is the spirit of what public television can be to me...completely relatable and mind-expanding and unifying all at the same time.
Completely agree. I learned so much from public television growing up.
Wowowow, a brilliant series, thanks a million for the upload. I am curious how did this take 10 years to upload after the trailers were dropped about a decade ago!!?!?!
Noam Chomsky never ceases to amaze with his insight. And Carlin is hilarious as always. This documentary ass kicks!
right? i was like 1957?
Came for Carlin
The apophatic persistence patented many solar abstractions which forthwith became unbecoming of each and every peculiar apple involved in sitting idly on the great knoll rising next to my grandmother's forgotten house cat's pituitary estuary tank.
Please share the full documentary if you can, this is fascinating
The year? 1957. The destination? Little Saint James. The goal? Being a cunning linguist
I wonder if there was a time when we shared an uneasy relationship with other hominids and language became a point of difference for survival
"Dogs don't care where the finger is pointing." And this is where the series shows its age a bit. Research has shown plenty of dogs DO understand pointing. Still a great series provoking plenty to think about. Thanks for the post!
2:22 did he find anything?
History is like self-reflection through the medium of language propelling itself into self-recognition. ~ Terence McKenna
Thank you for uploading. Not very often do we see so many leading scientist in one place. Refreshing to see the simplicity and no nonsense approach.
Black George Carlin 36:13
Trump should watch this but then he probably wouldn’t have won because he attracts the lowest common denominator which just happens to be a majority within an archaic electoral college framework
Very informative and highly amusing. Thanks. 😎
I worked at a bus depot and one of the bus drivers was still learning English and he said. "My bus he is brokens under the neath". Not exactly the right way but completely understood
Check again if that driver is borat
Amazing
that's poetic
I would rather live in a place with as many non-native speakers of english as possible. It's on the margins where innovations occur and poetry is emergent
@gedofgont yes I agree for myself I would like to learn the language of my family that I've been disconnected from "Maori "
The house was raised to the ground? 😂
"razed"
Do communities that have no written language a concept of grammar?
This study is almost 30 years old. I wonder, can it still applies globally in a world where tools have become overwhelmingly digital and virtual?
Just depends on where you live...
Very good video and I think gestures were created by human brains by themselves and why they were created, I think no body knows. If someone knows please let me know. Why do a group of neurones create a certain gesture. This is my question. Regards
Love to see Carlin here❤
30:30 am I being punked?
🤘🏾
17:35 Is that Sol?
4:00 Cus it feels better in the mouth parts duh
Very educational! Thank you!
Very interesting!!! Thank you!!!! The Pirahã language does not follow Chomsky’s rule.
12:50 Typo: he says "thoughts" twice but the second time the captions reads "folks". Just goes to show how gripped I was by everyone's words.
*caption reads No one is immune to typos
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum.
#120 Thumbs up 😊
Yo Noam!
What a lovely cast of characters, a wonderful thing to experience, thank you for the upload.
Gorgeous
... the human capacity to speak, the wonder of being able to communicate and the intricacy of the process and its impact on the development of society... ... ... all this leaves us perplexed... but knowing how to use language is even more important than understanding its origins and secret mechanisms...
This is so absolutely excellent that I’m speechless 🙂
I see what you did there 😄
I wish you'd upload the whole thing, please.
Interesting video, teşekkürler :)
