Thank you, Fr. Sunny for doing this interview with Abbot Rabang. Listening to the Abbot speak has brought me back to the time I spent with him in the Desert and how that experience has been pivotal in my own vocation story and ministry as a priest. I like the part where you talked about juridical matters. I suppose some people thrive on those matters (essential for the ordering of things), but monasticism is more a matter of the heart - a lifetime of adventure with God. It reminds me of the Russian spiritual classic, The Way of the Pilgrim, wherein the man embarks on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and wants to learn how to pray without ceasing. One would expect that the book will conclude with his arrival in the Holy City, but the man never gets there...because Jerusalem is no longer the city itself, but the Jerusalem of the heart. I may have left the monastery 40 years ago, but the monastery has never left me... it is as the good Abbot said: "it is the desert where we always return to find God."
