    My grandfather was born in 1906. He used to tell stories of threshing in the valleys of Humboldt County, California near Maple Creek. First with a stationary steam engine at a nearby lumber mill, and later with early tractors running flat belts. Even my father, born 1948, still gets a little misty eyed when he hears an old 2 cylinder “Johnny Popper”, reminding him of farming out in those hills.

    Could do without the hideous rendition of Bringing in the Sheves but otherwise brought back memories of when the huge thresher came to our farm for 'our turn' -- sliding down the straw stacks (and getting swatted for it) and all the food my mother had to make. I have used a scythe and it is hard work. Miss the farm every day.

    The combined harvester/ thresher was one hell of an improvement over the reaper/ binder and the stationary thresher. Although I love the nostalgia of the old days and the way the threshing bees brought the family community together, once the compact combine was invented there was no turning back.

    Neat footage. It covers the area widened from near Lederach north to Franconia and Souderton. I think this may have been filmed close to the widening around the mid/late 70’s. I remember the road being in terrible condition, no big repairs were being done because it was going to be torn up for widening. This footage seems to fit that memory. Great footage, thanks for uploading it! I lived on Landis road at this time.

      After crossing turnpike it is amazing intersection of 113 and Allentown Road was so tiny. Houses on left lined the road across from Bergeys tire shop seen on the right. This was shot mid-late 1960's. 113 wasn't even a state road noted by absence of yellow double line. With all the traffic on 309 Quakertown is trashed like Franconia was IMO.

    Wow, lots of memories here. Grew up in mainland, harleysville and Vernfield, but moved out in 2002. Remember much of this very well. Was a big deal when 113 was widened from near maple ave. north to Franconia and Souderton. Was so dusty and like riding on a washboard till it was finished. And how steep the approach was coming down from below Maple Ave to Sumneytown pike intersection until it was cut down. I went to the Indian creek brethren church through the 70’s and remember Curry Moyer playing for the congregation pretty regularly. Hiked along the Indian trail on the branch creek so many times, it was still a little wild back then. I visited the area in 2016, and have to admit…I’m a bit saddened by the development that happened in the area. What’s gone will likely never return.

      Probably 15 to 20,000 vehicles per day use 113 in 2024. Living in Quakertown in 1960's and returning to see it now, it's a big time place (Wal-Mart, Target, etc.). Evidenced by the size of the Police force big SUV presence to keep things from getting out of hand.

    Sort of funny that the mention of Rt113 once passed through Harleysville as Maple ave was glossed over. Whereas Telford, Souderton, Hatfield & Lansdale where made by the railroad areas like Skippack, Ledrock, Harleysville fed them the product to grow.

    • @jayruth3359
      @jayruth3359 8 месяцев назад

      There were three major eras in the opening of Lower Salford Township, spaced 100 years apart. First was when the Sumneytown Pike was improved and turnpiked around 1750, the hotel was opened and Harleysville began to form. Next was around 1850 when the North Penn Railroad cut through the area, bypassing Harleysville but forming a string of nearby railroad towns. Next was around 1950 when the Northeast Extension of the PA turnpike was built to connect the Pocono Mountains and northern PA. That was truly the beginning of the end of rural, Pennsylvania German Lower Salford.

      Still have the original vhs tape of this. Was good then and still is. Spent most of my life along the branch creek in the harleysville vernfield area. Remember very well the factors that led to the heavy development in the area. Mainly the turnpike and the struggling farm economy. Definitely led to the area being “for sale”. Love this look back on the areas history.

    Had enough banjo/bluegrass picking by a minute and a half into the program. Consider limiting presentations to Video, Sound, and Narration. Adding background music breaks the rule of three by adding an additional, or fourth, distracting component. If video is replaced with stills underscore with appropriate sound from video you have. Video, Natural Sound and Narrative is enough. Remember that some people may not share your personal taste in music.

My grandfather sold more Allis Chalmers combines starting in the 1930s at Lennon, Michigan than anyone. The goal was to get rid of horses and old steam harvesters.
