Join My Patreon! www.patreon.com/SerapeumHistoria Become a Member! www.youtube.com/@Serapeum By the middle of the tenth century, Byzantium - the Roman Empire - was stronger than ever. Its armies were ascendant and always on the attack, retaking lost lands. While the climax of the conquests took place under Basil the Bulgar-slayer, they got into full-swing under the warrior-emperors Nikephoros P...
Constantine VII (944-959) | Byzantine History
Просмотров 6 тыс.9 месяцев назад
After a life spent in the shadow of power, Constantine VII got his first chance to rule for real in 944, taking on the challenge of continuing the Empire's resurgence. Despite being middle-aged by the standards of the time, he had no experience of ruling - so would Byzantium prosper under his rule? All Greek pronunciations are according to the modern standard. (Or, rather, my butchering of the ...
Romanos Lekapenos | Byzantine History
Просмотров 14 тыс.Год назад
The Macedonian dynasty held sway over the Eastern Roman Empire for 189 years, yet for twenty-five years in that era another dynasty shared the throne. These upstarts were the Lekapenoi; their founder, Romanos, was a usurper. Usurpers were not novelties in Constantinople, but his mercy certainly was - as was his ability to juggle crises, and bring calm to a trouble state. This was just as well, ...

Просмотров 44 тыс.Год назад
For ninety-nine years three Komnenian emperors - Alexios, John and Manuel - ruled the Byzantine Empire. They inherited a state on the brink of collapse, but by the time they were done they had built Byzantium back up into the most powerful European empire. Yet fortune is fickle. Shortly after Manuel died, his dynasty would collapse; not long after that, so too did the Empire - decapitated by th...

Initially i actually thought the Arabs were opportunistic but then i remember the incompetence of Vahan (a Byzantine general) at the Battle of Yarmouk.

Because they didnt recieve the same support from the crusaders after the first one. They attempted to do it by themselves in Myriokephalon in 1176 but they failed.

those were the last days on an officially, nominally still united roman empire as all eastern emperors were recognised as overlords of the west. after the 797-802 ad events the roman empire was finally split permantly to a greek roman and a german roman empires. the eastern greek roman empire was destroyed in 1204 and in name only was revived again in 1261 until 1453 while the western german roman empire was ended in 888 ad and then revived in 962 by otho I and lasted until 1806 when francis II quit the throne and dissolved the empire which was evolved after the 13th century to the well known holy roman empire of the germanic nations = the first german reich.

Indeed. The great Basileus John II, would have recovered Anatolia. Unfortunately Manuel I neglected it and focused on his plans to reunite Italy with the Empire. His ambitious and all-time wet dream of every Eastern Roman Emperor gave time the Turks to regroup. See Myriokephalon for more.
