Exploring the octatonic scale on the Striso board
The layout of the notes on the Striso makes playing all diatonic and pentatonic scales very easy. Other scales like blues or harmonic scales require more effort to learn but I find them satisfying to play with.
I got a question about more exotic scales like the octatonic scale.
Since I wasn't familiar with this scale I've tried it and it was quite fun to play with.

Superbooth 2021: Striso board

The Striso board MPE instrument/controller made a last minute appearance at Superbooth 2021. Its isomorphic keyboard and extensive expressive possibilities could be tried by visitors. Some reactions: 'I've seen the Kickstarter video before, but didn't realize the Striso board is so versatile and fun to play.' 'Exactly what I was looking for! An MPE controller with an intuitive isomorphic note l...

The Striso is an expressive instrument that combines multidimensionally sensitive buttons with an innovative note layout that helps the player to understand the structures in music. The keyboard buttons capture each subtle finger movement, which allows for wide levels of musical expression that are typically only characteristic of acoustic instruments. Additionally, accents and sound effects ca...

The Striso is a new intuitive, portable and very expressive instrument being developed by Piers Titus van der Torren. The best way to show how attractive it is to explore the musical possibilities might be this video, where many different people, whether musician or not, explore playing the Striso for the first time. Amazing video, great instrument, i look forward to trying it on a trampoline, great way to demo ❤

This is an incredible device, it should be much more popular!
Great! Might be just what I have been looking for! But there are no comprehensive reviews out there. I won't spent 400€ based on seeing it played in the forest. I really do like your playful attitude but unfortunately I'm stuck in a kind of life where money must be invested wisely. Please send it for a review or do a more detailed video yourself!
Молодец!!!!)
I admire your product for its expressive and educational capabilities. It's on my list to save up for. Suggestions - bluetooth and a portable rechargeable power source. I hate wires. These days I can rig up both on my own and add them, but these days it just seems like an oversight not to include these, even if only as added cost options.
Thanks for your nice words. About your suggestion, unfortunately batteries and wireless devices complicate certification and shipping, and requires quite some extra engineering efforts. Like you say you can add this yourself, with for example a WIDI Uhost and a powerbank. If you really want battery and bluetooth internally and have the time and expertise, all ingredients are available to add both battery and bluetooth internally: some spare space, the needed pcb connections and open source firmware.
@@striso Thank you for your kind response. Still saving my coins. Must decide between a duet concertina and the duet configuration of the Striso, though I don't think the duet version is actually available as yet, except perhaps as a "beta".
Lovely, and it seems more accessible than some other devices that employ similar layouts and pitch bending capabilities. Tell us about the MIDI implementation.
IMHO it would be awesome to get videos of up people doing complex stuff with the Striso. I'm totally convinced it'd be a lot of fun to play around with, but less totally convinced it could play the same role in an orchestra or jazz band as a more established instrument - I mean theoretically it should be able to given the octave coverage and expressivity, but it'd be sweet to actually see it happen. Specifically, I'm talking about videos like say Dodeka puts out of people playing complex Bach pieces and the like on their isomorphic keyboard. (Although given the lower # of octaves and higher expressivity of your keyboard I'd assume probably strings or woodwinds might make more sense than piano.)
I agree, getting video's of skilled musicians doing more advanced stuff would be really great. I'm just an average musician that spends more time developing than playing :/
@@striso you are such an inspiration man, the striso was the best intuitive experience I've ever had as a musician! I hope it gets the recognition it deserves!
Auto-Translate works well. 10:32 Single-Board Striso like the one you can pre-order now. www.striso.org/contact/ (I'm on the list and a link to a pre-order site has gone out.)
Is the plan that one may eventually be able to buy 2 Striso keyboards and an accordion mount to get to an instrument like this, or is this instrument just a one-off?
Hi Daniel, this is a model with a smaller 25 button left hand keyboard, see www.striso.org/the-striso/. That version is not currently for sale, I might work on it in the future. I am working on a mount for 2 Striso boards, more resembling a (Wicki/Hayden) concertina with two identical keyboards (the Striso Duet).
@@striso Sweet! I'm currently trying to figure out if I can somehow afford one :-) .. BTW I hope you are including the costs you will incur when they need to be repaired in the price. I failed to do that adequately in a small company I had, which was a main reason for its failure. Of course your product looks way less complex and way more well-made then the weirdly-featured netbooks I was selling. But still, things break, and shipping esp internationally is hella expensive and customs will occasionally just "lose" things in some countries.
Great video! Good luck!
Microtonal capabilities?
Definitely! A number of tunings besides 12tet are included and switchable on the fly, like meantone/31tet, pythagorean, 19tet
@@striso Wow, I really want one now xD
@@Hecatonicosachoron54 Good to hear! I hope to open preorders for the next batch soon!
Congrats Piers! You sold me. I want a striso board :)
I salute you for investing yourself in this creation and I will be sharing your video.
I WANT ONE!!!!!!
Interesting. More video about the product will help. All the best to the team.
Saw your product on kickstarter and loved it instantly. Hoping you can launch your product soon. unfortunately it's too expensive for me, I wish you can lower down the price when eveything settles. Awesome product man!
Ah nice, leuk om te zien waar je nu mee bezig bent! :D
