Adding HydroPonic Planting To A Mature Aquascape
Harris reworks his oldest still running aquascape. The aquascape is an Aqua One AquaNano Bow with a Fluval Plant 3.0. He heavily cuts back his aquarium planting that includes Cryptocoryne Wendtii green, various Anubias species, Vallisneria Gigantea, and Green Tiger Lotus. He talks about the Pothos he first grew out of the aquarium. He then uses a Flare Forge hang-on-back basket to plant his Fuzzy Rabbit Foot and Monstera plants, one he has water rooted, the other he hasn't. Finally, he gives an overview of the benefits of using hydroponic plants.

Should YOU keep an aquarium?

Harris discuses the pros and cons of keeping an aquarium for the first time! Harris has kept fresh water aquariums and has been aqua scaping for over 20 years now, in this video he discuses some of the pros and cons of keeping and aquarium in a home or work space. Pond Life Aquatics is a family run aquarium and pond business based in North West London. We have recently opened up a brand new fre...
Nicely done, very unique scape and I love all the plant options. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much. Love your channel, been following on my other account for a while 🙏
@@pondlifeaquatics9796 thanks, much appreciated. How many tanks do you have btw?
wonderful!!
Glad you think so!
This or Oase biomaster?
I've not had my hands on the biomaster 2 yet so I'd not like to comment. However the original biomasters are great. I did have several issues with them sucking air. The benefit of having the prefilter and heater is fantastic but they are slightly less reliable than an FX in my opinion. Plus the auto refill on the FX is invaluable if you don't have access to things like a cobra or refill system. In conclusion both are great, it depends on the aquarium. Sorry if that's wishy washy. 🙏
Lovely lovely lovely
Thanks brother
Would be good to see what happened to the Acer leaves as I have one in my garden.
Oh they're marked up as Japanese maple! They give a slightly deeper tannin than the other maple leaves but they're great to use! Sorry if I didn't make that clear!
Thank you, I'll be trying them 😊
I don’t use botanicals in my aquarium but happy to watch! First viewer too 😊
Thank you for watching! 😊
Love the concept of the cave 😊
Thank you!
If you get ride of the stupid red baskets you can fit more media in, you will find the sponges on the outside should be replaced with some medium and finer sponges puttting in media in the side where the sponges should be will only clog up the media, also use a large course intake sponge will stop alot of mess going into the filter in the first place, anyway that's my experience with the FX4 in a large cichlid tank. one more thing carbon is only good for a couple of months and should be replaced if not it will leach back in the things it removed if the first place and could make your tank crash, puragen is a much better and safer product. cheers.
Honestly I was worried about the outlet if i removed the red structures but i'll definitely take your word for it. I haven't had any issue with clogging so far and have really only had minimal waste being drained off the bottom each week. I guess discuss are much less messy than cichlids though so that may be it? Love Purigen and will most likely use it in the future, I personally find that Red Sea Carbon, if you're willing to replace it regularly, is one of the single best removal products on the market. I've used it in koi ponds to help bring down heavy metal poisoning before and have had amazing success with it. The chemistry reaction from it is genuinely best in class. Cheers to you!
I've been tempted to do aquarium gardening, now I'm thinking I should hook up my Mead when I'm brewing it for CO2 lol
Please please please let me know if you actually do this I'd love to know the outcome 🫡
Honestly one of my favourite tanks of yours. It's just so different. I love it.
Thanks mate. It's really grown on me
excited for the shrimp updates :)
Stay tuned!
Just a shitty advert.
Interesting stuff 😊
Glad you think so!
Do you have Sodastream CO2 systems where you leave? If yes, then how does it compare?
Yes, it was actually one of the first pressurised systems I ever used. Dennerle actually have a soda stream adapter themselves but it doesn't come with a solenoid. I have a decommissioned one from TMC that I have an adapter kit on them. Personally I don't mind setting up pressurised systems although the initial outlay here is usually About £100 or more and then on an aquarium this size you will need to replace the soda stream every 4 ISH months which costs about £16 so the price is effectively the same. I've tried to convince beginner fish keepers to use them and there is a reluctance to set them up. I don't know if it's the added complexity or the idea of keeping a pressurised system in your home that puts people off but there is seemingly a push back from it. I think the beauty of the Carbo Bio is the simplicity and ease of use. Obviously you're not going to be able to really turbo your CO2 output to get crazy growth but as you can see in the video it's more than enough in my opinion.
some people follow the aproach of aerating the water more, or moving the water surface more, in order to increase exchange of both oxigen and CO2. Thereby CO2 from the atmosphere is introduced into the water, in acordance to what the plants consume. What do you think of this?
Absolutely it's a way to go. I think the point of the Dennerle is to make everything as consumer ready as possible, which I think for a lot of people is a great thing. I've done DIY with gelatin before and it has a better result than when I did it without
@@pondlifeaquatics9796 Yes, at least starting with the original Dennerle product would give some on a tighter budget time to become experts in the gelatine stuff. And when on holidays it surely is safer to use entirely Dennerle originals than some DIY. In fact Dennerle is a high end company, a bit like ADA, offering quality products with a lovely design. So now I agree that 4,50 pounds is ok, even convenient for a busy aquarist with a full time job. After all I guess it‘s about the same price as a pint of beer🤡 Just brainstorming🙂
4 pound 50 is expensive🤡
When you look at something like a nano co2 injector where the disposable canisters are about £10 a piece. On an aquarium this size it's comparable in my opinion 🙏 plus factor in the ease of use and I think it's great value 🙂
@@pondlifeaquatics9796 you can DIY with glaze and yeast for baking, plus sugar. You can find videos, and I will send a link if you will allow.
@@pondlifeaquatics9796 DIY ruclips.net/video/2TCGDfLUq30/видео.html
I absolutely know about DIY set ups. I've done them myself. I've had varying success with them. I genuinely believe that the Dennerle just removes some of the guesswork and being able to know the continuous output gives me a peace of mind that I personally never had when I was doing DIY but each to their own. That being said I've been toying with the idea of doing a long term project where I make everything from scratch including sticking the glass, DIY co2, no filter ect... So I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up doing it again in future.
@@pondlifeaquatics9796 the Dennerle hardware is of course great. I am criticising only the expensive consumables. Did you try using glaze and yeast for baking, plus sugar?
The plants looks really good! Really love the reds! Now I feel like I should also try a CO2. Love how you just keep propagating the reds! ❤
Thank you! I'm really enjoying the process watching it grow and propagate.
Do they ship to America? If not do you have any recommendations for things like that in that area?
We can try to buy the shipping costs could be quite high. An alternative would be a DIY CO2 set up which can be a fun project.
Pity about the awful music.
Each to their own. I love the music they make. Any suggestions?
How are you maturing the new system? I stopped freshwater some time ago as moved to marine/reef - but we almost always just use bacteria in a bottle to pre-seed the tanks, and it can wittle it down to a matter of a few days - and then you also know you only get the bacteria you want colonising most of the spaces. Thought there would be something for freshwater like this at this point?
Good question, we are using a product called Filter Medium by Aquadip and Stability by Seachem. Additionally there is a pre seeded filtration system that was going to be used alongside the FX4 to seed it from the tank the discus are coming from. All stuff I should've mentioned in the video, I'm still quite new to making videos on this channel and didn't script anything so forgot to mention that. Think in future I'll definitely script everything out to be more thorough! Thanks for watching, I hope you stick around to watch more and see how everything develops 🙏
How come you don’t use any mechanical filtration in the fx4?
I left a small amount of mechanical. I realised I don't mention it in the video. We have another fluvial 405 with mechanical filtration being added on with a prefilter attachment possible addition in the future. Honestly I'd be okay with how it is now anyway. My filtration at home is literally half a sliver of a sponge and then an ungodly amount of seachem matrix. I'm a firm believer that bio filtration is the most important factor in a filter and keeping waste down can largely be achieved through water changes
😻😻😻😻😻
Halo finish the fight lofi is a nice fit
finished the fight against bad water quality
Where did you get that giant T-Rex skull?
It's cool innit. We got them from a company at a road show. I think we have one dry still. If you like I can find out the details and get a product page made up and send you the link later 😁
@ yes please that would be great!
I do not have a favorite filter other than the OASE and whenever I can justify buying another filter I will get this FX 4 . Since I appreciate the available gravel cleaner that hooks up to the canister allows you to get some of the muck without draining the water. Lastly I know that some people have a problem with seeing equipment on or inside the aquarium but I think they would like the ridiculous amount of nastiness from entering the main filter by using the EHEIM pre filter , especially when cracking open the FX isn't the most time friendly situation.
I'll get that done today for you 🙂
I was actually planning on a video discussing prefilters and filter attachments in their forms. I was debating putting an inline prefilter and an additional inline heater. Don't get me wrong I love the oase biomasters, they were my go to for a very long time, I just had a couple of build quality issues with them. That being said, a lot of my clients still run them and they're very good.
Very good tutorial I wanna see it auto top up system please 🐟
Coming soon!

Absolutely lovely. Never seen a biorb look so lovely
Thank you! 😊

It’s a beautiful therapy 🐟🐠🦐☺️
I love it ❤️
Never seen such practical Co2 setup, it is very interesting! Easy Co2 setup video would be very interesting
I will probably be talking about that on the update for this tank which will be in a couple of weeks hopefully!
Is this co2 set reliable? Like our local shop said everything besides a real co2 tank is not really good co2.
I will be talking about this properly in the update video for this tank once I've had a few weeks to evaluate it and measure plant growth but having had it running for a few days it's incredibly promising
can u do a video on the Co2 set up please?
Absolutely. Anything specificly about it or just the whole range?
Easy CO2 is all I’ve ever wanted
Newbie question here: why should you not have a tank in front of a window? I have no other space but in front of a window. I have a turtle in a big tank next to my bed, but that's really the only place his tank can be. Is putting a tank in front of a window such a bad idea that I should consider taking it down and not replacing it? So far I've had no problems with it other than a few surprises that our local water company pulls on us, which can be easily countered by testing it before water changes, then treating it (they change well fields depending on the time of year, and it swings radically from being hard and full of calcium to being down-right acidic. It's bad enough that you can taste the difference when they change. Essentially it means we use a lot of calcium bi-carb to neutralize the acid before adding and bring the dissolved solids into line before adding it to the tank. Anyway, bringing this back on track, what is the problems with having a tank in a window? I hope that if there is a problem, that it will be something that I can rectify without blocking the window. It's my only source of sunlight, and my only view of the outdoors.
Wow, first of all i'm sorry you've been having trouble with your water that sounds horrible. The issue with having a fish tank in the window largely comes from too much direct sunlight. I should have probably specified rooms that get a lot of direct sunlight it's a much worse idea. The problems are largely down to spikes in temperature during the day as sunlight causes aquariums to heat up, additionally the algae blooms you can get from direct sunlight are mad. This can be mitigated somewhat by using a good quality background or window frosting but I would still avoid it where possible. That being said, if you are currently keeping an aquarium in the window and not experiencing any issues that aren't caused by your water board, then i'd say keep on keeping on. I would recommend as many live plants as possible to combat algae but i know that can be somewhat difficult in turtle tanks. Let me know if this helps!
