How to Paint a Motorbike Tank (with commentary)
A guide through on how we painted some Triumph Motorcycle Tanks (with Scallops) starting with bare metal and working up to the Scallops and Topcoat. There is a lot of information to cover so it was decided that rather than a regimented step by step, a "commentry" or "potcast" style has been adapted, where we discuss issues, different processes and thoughts as we work through each step in the process.

Just came across your video, really cool! Out of curiosity as I'm painting my bike, dontiu sand the clear coat in end so that you can't feel stripe layer?
Mine started to leak when push the button.Never had this before maybe failed valve.
I always wonder why cant we just touchup those scuffed spots if the area is not too big. Will repainting a bigger area helps blend in with the other panels? I worry of making a small problem into a bigger problem lol 😅

So in theory you could intentionally get a darker shade just by switching to black primer for grey paint?

Sorry , what PSI for the base, what PSI for the clearcoat if using a HVLP spray gun?
With the HVLP you will have to check the gun specs and recommendations via the manufacturer.

Step 5. What kind of flat black is used? After I used flat black and tried to sand, it built up in clumps on the tank and sand paper.
Acrylic Lacquer Flat or Matt Black (not Enamel). Leave it to dry (normally a few minutes) before sanding otherwise it will clog. If you apply too the coat too heavy, this can cause clogging as well. Failing that, you can get powder guide coat in a spray-can.

I’m getting ready to try to paint my bike I’ve been watching videos for almost 2 years now I’ve got primers paint reducer, activator sand paper clear coat, I think I’m ready, if it doesn’t look good just sand it down and try again

How long before can hardens up after activating?
It’s always best to use the can then and there. However as air is not getting into the can and If the can is kept cool, I have known people that have used it the next day with no problem( just check first to see that it’s ok… will start to splatter)But we always suggest to people to use the can right away.

You are far too close with the spray can
I know its a little hard to tell in the video but we are using left-handed spray cans, which as you should know, are a little different to use.

How does the engine run with the overspray in the tank? Better to mask off the tank neck
Na all good in this case and in the context of what was done. If using a 2k primer I would have been more careful but hey its a you tube video. Tank was flushed after anyway.

Great video! You spray with such ease, confidence and smooth. That is a learned and experienced talent! So you do not sand after each final spray? I guess you don't have to as long as you are under the 1 hour time. Very well done. Do you buff it out after all has cured? Sorry for so many questions, I don't want to screw up my 1976 RD400. I can build high performance engines (shop), but I can screw up painting every time. At 68 years old you would think I should have mastered painting - not even close. Thanks
