Being a teenager in the late 70’s Rocking to this Anthem. Such a different World today.

I saw Thin Lizzy in ‘77 and ‘78 at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA. The ‘77 show was on October 20th and is significant for two reasons. One is that it was the same day as the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash and two is that it was recorded and released in 2009 under the title Still Dangerous. I also met them at a record store appearance when they were opening for Queen. There was hardly anyone there, so I got to spend a lot of time talking to Phil. He was as kind, humble and gracious as he could be. He answered all of my questions (which were many) and signed my Johnny the Fox album. As I walked away from him, I realized that I had been in the presence of greatness. My only regret is that I didn’t get to meet Brian Robertson because that was the tour where his arm was slashed in a bar fight on the eve of the tour when he was supposedly defending Frankie Miller. I did get to see him in ‘77 and ‘78, though. The time I met them they were opening for Queen. Gary Moore was substituting and I had no idea who he was. I walked up and asked him and he replied “I’m just a stand in.” The only reason I remembered him years later is because of the scars on his face, which were much more prominent in person than in pictures. I was just a 19 year old kid who had just made a fool of himself lol.

One of the coolest bands ever and their music still rocks to this day. "Jailbreak" was and still is my favorite Thin Lizzy song and reminds me of being a teenager back in the late 70s. Seems like while all the cliquish, privileged kids were listening to garbage like Captain & Tennille, Christopher Cross and Chicago, me and my boys embraced the rebellious appeal of Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and The Outlaws - all with their original sound. Not many people know this but Phil Lynott was of Australian and Caucasian decent, i.e. his mother was white and his father black, which was taboo back in the day. Phil carried that chip on his shoulder through childhood and as a young adult. He embraced that outcast image and capitalized on it with his music and wicked bass guitar playing.
