Scottish National Trail Part 3 River Loyne to Cape Wrath
On Sunday 23/06/24 I completed the Scottish National Trail in 15d 22h 26m. In total my route added up to 884.7 km and 19923 m of ascent, averaging 55 km per day, with the longest day just shy of 69 km. Basically an ultramarathon every day for over 2 weeks, all while carrying a pack.
My style was lightweight but not fully ultralight backpacking, walking rather than running. I wild camped throughout apart from one night in Blackburn bothy.
I was self supported - in the earlier stages I lived off the land, then picked up a 3 day cache just outside Fort Augustus. A second cache at Inverlael was compromised by pine martens, necessitating a return taxi ride to Ullapool to resupply.
I came in just...

well done!! 2nd time watching , took notes for my attempt nxt year, will prob watch again, lol. Loved that you self supplied from shops most of the journey, do you reckon you could have done it without the caches tho, as im prob not gonna be able to do that on my trip? loved the singing, I tend to go disco songs when the hiker maddness kicks in, dunno why, scared some hikers on the path with my rendition of Ma Baker by Boney M once! once again, a fantastic achievement , well done sir!! You can easily do without caches so don't worry about that. All the best for your ramble!

Cheers Paul. I used Memory Map For All on iPhone for the southern sections with the Walkhighlands routes downloaded. From Clunaie north I knew the country well enough that I didn't need any navigational help. No paper maps or analogue compass carried, though I did have redundancy in the form of the maps on my Garmin watch.

Enjoyed that cheers. I walked this back in 1998 with myog ultralight kit cos you couldn't buy the stuff back then! Took me 7 days but i started at Glen Finnan as thats where it used to start. Used a tarp and headnet approach like the Germans but the trail is blessed with plenty of bothies. It wasn't so established back then so my route differed a bit from today's route. It would be nice if making your own way north was more encouraged. Well done on your trip. You definitely had better weather than on my trek 🌧⛈️🌧

No boots, trail runners are what’s required for fastpacking. I use Inov8 roclites

Hi Gavin, congratulations on your achievement. I'm very glad I came across this video of yours. It's great to get a nice concise report that nevertheless has some snippets of info useful for planning. I am hoping to do the trail this year in May but will be allowing myself quite a few more days than you! I'm definitely more in alignment with your lighter weight approach than the heavyweights you met en-route and I'd be interest to see your gear list if you happened to have it on lighterpack for example.

Wow! Completing it in that time is a huge acheivement on it's own, but also filming it, amazing!!! You even seemed to make it into the Cape Wrath Pub Crawl! Thanks so much for the insight of what it's like to do it in such a short time!
