I love driving across Canada and the United States. I've been rail-fanning since about 2001, I've dabbled in model railroading (N-scale) since 2003 and I have been a member of the railroad group CRHA Niagara Division since 2006 (and its President from 2015 - 2023). A restoration artist and toy maker by day; I enjoy nature photography, taking long walks, cooking and traveling.
Catching THUNDER RAIL Short Line Railroad MLWs working in Saskatchewan Canada
I like short lines and I have never seen THUNDER RAIL operating before. It was great to visit their shop and see their parked engine #908 but even more exciting to be informed that they had a train coming back from a Pioneer grain mill (about half an hours drive away). Their track speed is slow (10 mph) so they don't speed away from you, but they can still hide in areas where the road and the track move away. It was nice to get out there on this fine (windy) day and see them working!

There's an event today...it's private (Union Pacific employees only) but you can't stop us from peeking! Nope, that's cool, they're ok with us peeking. So we're here to peek at Big Boy before she heads out on her 2024 eastward tour.

@@gailmckenzie8291 thank you! It's a beautiful bridge but tricky to catch trains here
Back in 2007, I believe, CP 2816 was brought down to the Soo/CP's Bensenville yard near Chicago. As railroad employees of the Soo, we were allowed four free tickets each to ride excursions out of Bensenville along with the general public. I was only able to obtain tickets for the run from Milwaukee's Union Station to Chicago's Union Station. Also, when 2816 had to be "spun" on the turntable at "B-ville," I brought down my 1950 Hudson Pacemaker sedan which I owned at the time (I now have a '53 Hudson Super Wasp). Anyway, I parked my Hudson directly in front of the 1930 Hudson type (4-6-4) 2816 short of the turntable. The railfans there were elated over being able to get rare shots of a "Hudson in front of a Hudson."
@@WAL_DC-6B that is a wonderful recollection and story; thank you for sharing that!! Oh yeah, railfan, car enthusiasts and so many would love your creative idea for the impromptu photo op!! (Hope you were sent a few photos) Thank you for writing, I enjoyed your comment
@@traveling_ladyrailfan Actually, I took my own photos. I certainly understand and appreciate the effort and frustrations you experienced chasing 2816. Those of us who've seriously photographed trains have gone through the same troubles at one time or another. Comes with the territory. Thanks for sharing and "may all your signals be green."

I spent seven days in Montana exploring the former Milwaukee Road mainline from Harlowton, MT to Avery, ID (this included a 17-mile bike ride over the Hiawatha Trail). I also visited the railroad depot museum/post office at Avery, ID on September 12, 2024. The postmaster or clerk there told me that the St. Maries Railroad had shut down, had its track torn up and just a few hundred feet of the former railroad exist with a locomotive on display there. But a few hours later when I visited the town of St. Maries itself, I saw the yard there with a St. Maries switch locomotive not to mention some former UP GEs on a sidetrack. It looked like a working railroad from what I could tell. What's the present story on this obscure Idaho railroad? Thanks for your response and for sharing your terrific video on the St. Maries Railroad!
@@WAL_DC-6B how fortuitous that you should write, I was actually in St Marie's Iad a few days ago. (I was going to be making a follow-up video ... Your response has encouraged me!) Last year when I visited in September of 2023 we were told that they go from St Marys to Plummer on Tuesdays and thursdays, we returned this year, and we're told that they go to plumber on Mondays and Wednesdays and we had arrived on a thursday, unfortunately so we weren't able to see anything running. However we were able to see five out of six of the engines that are supposed to be in their roster, so that was something.
@@traveling_ladyrailfan Well that answers my question about the St. Maries Railroad still in existence. Thanks, and "good shootin'" with your next possible video on this railroad.
A good catch of a somewhat obscure shortline. Who and where do they interchange with to get the grain to export markets?
@@robertarcher7213 they share with CN, meeting at the Pioneer terminal at Crooked River. Pioneer has 1 track, Thunderrail has another, they work the track and then CN comes and picks it up.
When we arrived , CN (at Crooked River) was just about to take the full loads west (through to Melfort) and CN had just brought empty cars... which thunder rail put on a dead track at crooked river pioneer terminal which they could take out and fill as needed.
Great to see 2004 in service in 2024!

Good video; AWM had mentioned that you had looked around the station area earlier this month. Not many tracks left, does GO store a trainset overnight like VIA used to?
@@robertarcher7213 hi rob. No, it's not stored overnight. I think the trains are staged in Winona. But the schedule has changed a few things new too. When the service first started, it departed the falls at 5:19. I *think* it's arriving in the falls around 6:20ish now. AWM can catch them where he is, around 7:20 coming from the falls.

Nice video and wonderful picture of the CP train on the MCRR bridge. Just a memory now.
@@-smokem that was Arnold's photo (a w.mooney) and I asked him, "how in 1995 did you get that shot?" There were no drones, not that he uses one. He told me about how he knew this train was coming, crossed the border quickly, (these were the days before 9/11 and you didn't require a passport or lengthy security check to cross the border) found a tree with a limb was way out into the gorge and climbed the tree out on a limb. Can you imagine?! man that is one dedicated rail fan!!
@@traveling_ladyrailfan A W Mooney is quite a dedicated rail fan and photographer. He captured a lot of trains, many in areas that you can't do today because they don't run anymore unfortunately. I lived a few blocks from that line that one went through downtown and through Clifton Hill from childhood to adulthood. You have great videos especially ones from that Niagara Region that I can relate to as I live there.

Another great video I really enjoyed! I loved the pic at 3:18 with the Minolta Tower in the background. My family loved the Waltzing Waters that were next to the Minolta. There was also a souvenir shop and snack shop next to the Dancing Waters (that's what we called them). I remember getting food either before or after the Dancing Water show and being able to look down and see the railroad tracks. I detest that area these days with all the highrise hotels and expensive restaurants. I avoid going over there on my yearly visits. If I do go over there it is only to get a view of the Falls from the dead end area at Livingstone Street near the Loretto Academy. And I presume that area is going to be ruined once that new development is built at Loretto. I also enjoyed the picture downtown of Rosberg's. My mom and grandmothers loved going to Rosbergs. My then wife and I were visiting Niagara Falls in October 2009 a few weeks after Rosbergs burned. It was so sad to see the rubble of the old department store. Oddly enough, that is also the year there was a big fire in Niagara on the Lake. We arrived in NOTL to see the flames and smoke from that fire. We stood and watched as the fireman battled the blaze. Later that evening we did the ghost walk at Fort George.
@@ThomasC-Crazy4NiagaraFalls thank you for your comments and recollections! I was just fine by the falls tonight and wow - the changes in 25, 30 years,?! So many changes!
Great video! I have been visiting Niagara Falls yearly for over 50 years and I love seeing "then and now" pictures. My dad took thousands of pics of the area throughout the years and I have scanned many of them to my computer. I especially enjoyed your pics of the Clifton Hill area. I have great memories of eating at the original Mama Mia's location on Victoria Ave right near the top of Clifton Hill. We would eat there every year and request a table near the window so I could see a train go by as we ate. Do you have any idea if there were also tracks a little further down Clifton Hill, perhaps where Oneida Lane is? In 1978, traffic was backed up on Clifton Hill and we got stuck right on the tracks with a train coming. Trains went slow through that area so the train was able to stop for us to clear the tracks. I still remember a guy standing on the front of the engine waving and smiling at my family, scared to death in our car. Memories can be a little fuzzy, so in my mind, we were further down Clifton Hill and not right at the top where your video shows the train tracks. I've looked at my dad's pics from the 60's, 70's, & 80's and also looked at old pics online and can never see tracks further down Clifton Hill, so I am thinking my memory is just wrong and we were at the top of the Hill. Thanks, I enjoyed your video!
@@ThomasC-Crazy4NiagaraFalls hi there! thank you so much for sharing your recollections. To my knowledge there were no tracks going down Clifton Hill (way too steep a grade) but there is a spur down by the loretto Christian academy (you can see the Falls from here) which leads to Chippawa"s industrial area through marineland. And there were also tracks that went along pass the skylon Tower and the Minolta Tower as you might have seen in the pictures, if that helps?

Many people don't understand how RUclips works. I don't make ANY money by putting videos on RUclips. Not a penny, even though the viewers have to watch ads, and ads generate income, they do not earn income for the content creators (unless you literally have multiple millions of views, and fulfill various other criteria, otherwise you do not qualify for monetization) As a result, every day that I go out to take videos, it's my gas, It's my time, and I have to pay for all equipment. If I were making any money at all, then I could invest it into better sound equipment, better video equipment, better video editing software, etc. All making these videos does for me is costs me time and money. It's a financial loss for me each time. But I love doing it because I enjoy sharing a passion for railfanning with folk all around the world and offering free video content for viewers.
