The rest of Christianity does not understand Paul. They think when he says we are not saved by works he means any works, when, instead he is only referring to the works of the Law of Moses. If every time Paul says works, even righteous works, as in Titus, you add the words , OF THE LAW OF MOSES, you will begin to understand Paul. Why do the works of the law of Moses not save us? Because they do not require a change from our spirit to keep them. However, Christ's teachings do require a change of our spirit to keep them. For example, you might never murder, and therefore keep that part of the law of Moses perfectly, but you are not saved from sin by not murdering, because you have hate, envy, backbiting, jealousy. All spirit sins. However, if you love all people, including your enemy you are saved, which means, delivered from sin. Love requires not only work through faith, but also requires us to change from our spirit. You might never commit adultery, and therefore keep that part of the law of Moses perfectly, but you lust. By not committing adultery you are not saved/delivered from sin, but if you do not lust you are saved from all related sins. Salvation is free in that you no langer put sacrifices on the altar to pay for your own sins, Least any man boast, but Christ's blood paid for your sins, but you are not saved in your sins you are saved from your sins through repentance. A person must live a way they choose. They can freely choose to live Christ's way through faith or they can choose to live some other way, but they cannot just do nothing. That is impossible. So choosing to live Christ's way saves us from sin freely.
