Compressed Earth Block | Stucco
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
After two years of using earth plaster and sealing it with linseed oil, we decided to stucco our house. As much as we wanted to use these green building techniques they just did not hold up to our climate. So we chose to stucco our home. Since this is not a traditional build we show you how we attached our stucco to our wall. Some may ask "why not just put concrete on the wall. If one does this...

With a little chiseling one can open one side of the blocks and the rest is stacking like legos. For less than $10 you can have an emergency stove that will burn any small sticks or twigs. By burning sma...

Are you not watering the blocks while curing? I heard a lot of ppl water once or twice a day for a week, supposedly making it stronger.

I have studied this for a while and my first thought was poor compression, possibly an inferior compression machine. This is not a new technology, there are structures in the world that been around for hundreds of years that show less degradation than your 10% portland blocks. I also noticed that none of your blocks contained any form of binder.

Why didn't CEBs work in your climate? I've seen examples of CBEs as bathroom walls that get wet without any breakdown and don't understand why your exterior walls would be eventually breaking down.

expert rammed earth guy told me to use 15% clay and 10% cement. This is for rammed earth in big forms. he says minimum 30cm but I think here in the tropics where temperature does not vary as much as in a desert a 16 to 20cm thick wall is enough.

That's a good test but my guess is the cement will become brittle over time and the blocks will crumble. Earth bricks have been used worldwide for centuries and none of the oldest buildings have cement in the bricks. This test is relevant for flood prone areas, in which case you probably shouldn't build with dirt. Stabilized bricks are good for the first few courses in case the floor floods. I suspect cement laced earthen blocks don't perform their water wicking duties as well as clay blocks either because once cement gets wet it doesn't dry out. That is a collapse waiting to happen. Clay breathes, cement doesn't. Just a thought.

If your income from your job is stable, consider taking a mortgage on your house for the tax write-off. Over the course of the next 15 years, the tax savings from the home mortgage could save you enough to put two of your kids through college. It would also give you some capitol to invest in other assets to make you money. Leverage and debt can be beneficial if you don't go too far. Find some good books on the subject and think about it. You don't have to take all the cash out. Get a mortgage for what you can afford and reinvest the money.

Nice video. I wish you would of ran them over with your car or something to show how durable it was after water. How much was your machine? I see a company selling them for around 70k. That's a little high for compressing dirt and portland, but one of these would be great to have, no doubt.
