That is an Eastern Garter snake. I had one about 30 years ago. He was one of my 1st pet snakes. They are really cool. One of the few species you can keep communally. Although, you can with most other Garter snakes as well. Ribbon snakes are also probably in that area, and they are technically garter snakes as well. Same genus and everything. I am not really sure why they don't have garter snake in their common name. Just the way they named them I guess. Kind of like how some animals that have the word "mouse" in their name, are technically rats, and vice versa. Sometimes common names are just downright misleading.

There's one identical to this just a few miles east of Somerset. Spent a lot of my early teen years climbing it and stomping through the woods around it. Spectacular view from the top too. They're dangerous now but, hidden KY gems.

I definitely wouldn't be climbing up an old fire tower because I'm very very afraid of heights even though I have been up in an airplane and if someone said that they would pay me really good money to climb up that thing I would ask for the money up front
