In this episode I consider how routines can help to organize time but also contribute to a sense of repetition and boredom. I also consider boredom as a symptom of depression in modern life. Finlos Lives - Life and Death and Love and Birth pt 3
I just picked one of these up actually, but the stock jack on it is a bit odd, do you know anything about the type of jack Oktava were using at the time? Seems like it's close to an aviation pj-055, rather than a regular commercial 6.35mm.
Octava sounds better here to me, and I often times can't here a big difference in this type of side by side audio vids but this time it was pretty clear to me. Still the 2021 seems like a nice mic for the price.
I just ordered a used one on Ebay for about US $150 (from a US seller). How do I check that it isn't counterfeit?? Also, any recomendations on a good (but inexpensive) Dead Cat for this mic?
That's a really good questions as this is a commonly counterfeited mic. The first question is if the seller was legit. Also, the prices is fair for a used one, assuming it's in good shape. A real model should be labeled as made in Japan. Did it come with any accessories like it's pouch or mic stand? If so and if they are original, they should both be Audio-Technica branded. Also, hopefully the mic just sounds good. Let me know what you find.
@@finloslives Thanks for the reply. Yes, it did come with the accessories. The pouch seems to be a "simulated" leather pouch (I think it is plastic or a nylon pouch, but has simulated leather "grain." ) It has raised letters saying "audio-technica" on the pouch. The mic holder also has raised letters and a raised logo. On the specs sheet on BandH, it says the weight of the mic is 80grams, and I weighed mine, and it is EXACTLY 80 grams. The only STRANGE thing is that the insert thread adapter for converting 5/8ths thread to 3/8ths is black plastic, while the adapters I normally see appear to be brass. (The 5/8th thread in the mic holder is brass, the adapter to 3/8th inch is black plastic.) However... on the photos for the Amazon listings for the matched pair of mics, the adapter does appear to be black plastic. So maybe the original owner bought the set of TWO mics, and then decided to sell one of them?
@@finloslives Also, forgot to ask earlier. Do you know of a good (but not too expensive) dead cat for this mic?
I really love the tone of the MD-421 ii. To me it has the such great clarity in the high ends while not sacrificing those low ends and has versatility with the high pass switch. I find the aound more impressive than the SM7B and the RE-20 for vocals, but that could just be an amateur opinion.
I absolutely LOVE the MD421-II for voiceover/vocal work. My biggest complaint is how susceptible to plosives it is.
Sold
Glad I could help you make a decision. Let me know what you think of it!
@@finloslives i actually ended up going with the OC18. I figured if the OC16 is this good then the next up can only be that much better. Thanks again for your video!
Something is amiss here. The intended purpose for this mic is wherever a "shotgun" pattern is needed or beneficial. The comparison mics are all presumably cardioid patterns. So, there are 2 issues: 1. When would a shotgun -- significantly narrowed width -- be preferable. And of available shotgun mics, why this one. Anyway, it could well be that particularly in non-treated rooms at close distance, that this mic will also work quite well (as demonstrated). But the other mics should have a more natural pickup pattern in a good acoustical environment. And the large diaphragm mics compared will be far more versatile with any source requiring pickup lower than 100 Hz.
All mics are compromises in one way or another, and no mic is perfect. The reasons to go for the AT975R (over other shotgun mics) is that this one sounds PRETTY good, is PRETTY versatile, and PRETTY affordable. From the frequency response graph, it looks like it was (mostly) designed for voice while requiring little EQ and doing a somehwhat ok job of reducing things like wind noise and maybe handling noise. So, more a jack-of-most-trades than a master of anything. It might be that he compared this mic to cardioid pattern mics because that is all he had.
These are fair questions. The point of this vid was to explore the hypothetical question of "If I can have only one mic within a limited budget, and it has to fill several different roles, which would be best?" I think the AT875r is the best "do-it-all decently" mic money can buy. Good for camera use, for podcasts, for field work, for interviews in the field. Just a good mic.
Wow the Dynacaster sounds best overall, but for the price, I expected the m70 pro x to sound better than fifine.
I was very disappointed by the m70. The dynacaster is my most frequently used mic.
where you find the shockmount for Beyer?
It is just a generic one off Amazon.
The 421 II served me well over 20 years. (still works) Great mic.
I regret selling mine. I am looking to get a good used one. It has incredible versatility.
Is it okay if dynacaster is next to windows and sometimes The sun's rays touch the microphone
I think sunlight won't affect the mic negatively as long as you cover it when not in use, mostly for temperature control.
For next reviews: Schoeps mics for indoor interview and for outdoor, with sound devices recorder.
Schoeps is way overrated and I doubt anybody would pick it over this mic in a blind test and
I have not owned a Schoeps, but I will see what I can find.
Thanks for the review! I'm searching for a singing mic for drummers and mics like the Shure 56A and this are super useful, because the XLR goes off to the side and the cable is not catching your sticks while playing. But I guess this mic isn't well suited for my use case, because of its high sensitivity to surrounding sounds (the drum kit 2 feet behind it, for example^^)?
Yeah in my experience this mic is not very directional and susceptible to ambient/room noise. But it's tone is very smooth.
I need a mic for very loud weddings up to 110db. Do you think this microphone is good for that? And would there be distortion in very loud environments?
I think this could be used in that environment; but yes, I think in situations of loud cheers, booming DJ, or anything exceeding the mic's max SPL (127db) there is the potential for distortion. If you only reach the 110 you describe, I think this could be a very good mic - especially if you are thinking of using it in tandem with a camera to shoot video.
Very good review - thanks
So which one good?
The fifine is the better cheap option, the Dynacaster is my favorite overall.
thanks for the review! you totally sold me on the dyncaster! lol
I love it; my go to mic.
💦 *promosm*
i disagree gavin ..they have the same character ..and same quality ,,its not audiable and judgeable to the human ears
I think the 101 has more clarity, but the 219 has more fullness and character.
The aston stealth is interesting.
I like the MK-101 capsule on voice better.
I do as well. The MK-101 consistently surprises me with its clarity.
@@finlosliveshad it for a decade, still miss it
Lousy review in every aspect, the podcast pro for example shines on guitar cabinets and these 2 microphones are not comparable at all so why a stupid video like this???
Appreciate the comment. I thought it interesting to compare two dynamics from the same manufacturer for voiceover use.
That was an outstanding narration, sir. I related most to your mention of wanting the design of your equipment to inspire creativity. That hit close to home and I couldn't have said it better myself. I wasn't even sure if other people shared the same sentiment lol. Your time is appreciated.
Thanks so much for the comment. I require inspiration to work, and I find more interesting microphones help me approach the recording process with more engagement. I love technical design, and I prefer mics that take risks.
Thanks, great review. I bought the AT875r months ago, to also use with my F3. But I have a huge issue outside because the gain is super super low using this mic with the F3. I have to boost to hell and back in post to get a reasonable level, which obviously increases noise. Strangely though, I get plenty of gain when plugged into my H6 using the same XLR cable. It's an odd issue and I never found a solution despite spending hours looking online. Have you experienced this on your F3 ?
Thanks for the question and sorry for the delay in response. I don't have that issue with the F3 at all, plenty of gain. Are you using a different cable, maybe? I will do some tests to compare between interfaces and report back.
@@finloslives Thanks. Same cable. Tried a few different cables and same issue., but it's much better on the H6 so it's a bit of a weird issue. F3 works great on all my other mics. As I said, it's mainly an issue using it outside with quieter environments like nature. If I use it close-up it's not that bad but I can't help feeling the sound should be fuller. Sometimes it sounds a bit too "thin" compared to other reviews I've seen.
Sounds like your phantom power is not on?
@@johnnyweissmuller5838 Yeah, it definitely was 100% on. I even tried it with 24v and 48v to see if there was a difference. Tried many times in different scenarios.
The phantom power voltage and current might be different for the F3 vs the H6, which could effect the mic's output level.
Amazing review mate, one of the best I found for this mic! I'm buying this bad boy. Thanks
I am so glad it helped. It's a great all-purpose microphone.
Hi, How much do these go for if i wanted to buy one in this day & age
You can get the vintage edition from Walmart.com for $200, believe it or not. Otherwise, you can fine preowned 2200s for between 125-150 on reverb or other sites. reverb.com/item/76616918-se-electronics-se2200-columbus-oh?US-Shop_unpaid&
@@finloslives Alright thanks, I own one in silver but missing a power supply for it and can't seem to find one
How does this compare to something like an SM7B? I like it way more aesthetically and am thinking about switching my SM7B out for it. I know they're two different mics but for portability this looks amazing. Am I compromising a huge difference sound if I do so?
The cardinal is a condenser, so you will get a lot more gain and sensitivity than the SM7b, which is a dynamic. It also has a fuller tonal range. Truth be told I am not the biggest fan of the SM7B, at least for my voice. This is such a lovely mic with carved wood body. You might also check out the EV/Blue Raven, which has a similar form factor, but is made of black metal and is a dynamic. That is a quieter sound because it is a dynamic.
No we understand lol this is a beautiful mic
It really is. Thanks for the visit.
smooth sounding sE, very warm but nice. AT and Fifine ... would like to sound as the Lauten.
Thanks for listening
This thing has some strange mid frequency struggle IMHO
Yes - it sounds like what it costs... cheap.
I have it, and love it sound and look.
THE bass cannon
Yeah, the bass is real. But the mic is also so smooth.
the 219 sounds slightly darker and boxier. I prefer the 101 - though actually own four mk219s from the 1990s.
I love both, but I agree that the 101 has a clearer/cleaner sound.
Amazing, exactly what i was looking for.
Glad I could help!
Im really interested in this mic. It seems to be a great mic and, since i dont have a uab audio interface, the usb and XLR connections are great option. Im wanting to start a podcast, so niw considering this as a strong option!
It's yours! email me some shipping info and I'll send it your way. finlos@finloslives.com
This one has always stood out among the other budget options that clog the market. a totally passable sound. If I had a company that relied on Zoom meetings or anything like that, I’d buy every employee one of these or a Q2U and require everyone upgrade their sound from EarPods and internal mics. Doesn’t take much to get solid audio!
It would work for that perfectly. I see you use the Ethos - I loved mine, but the low-frequency resonance in the capsule was just too much and made my voice sound very muffled.
@@finloslives Yeah, anytime I use it for VO I take the foam off (but I use the KSM32 more for that). I have a complicated relationship with it for podcasting. A little EQ really does bring it to life nicely. I've recently found some good processing I dig. I also have found a good distance from it over time. Eating it like a dynamic really does overwhelm the low-end. I buy and sell a lot of mics because it's fun, but the Ethos is one I always come back to. Will never leave the locker. I do find that it's almost too lifelike when in a podcast setting with someone using a typical dynamic mic. But no matter how many times I rotate a different mic in for a show, it's amazing how often the Ethos finds its way back onto the boom arm.
I have the oc16 self noise not that much noticeable if u have a good interface it’s a condensor mic afterall is very quite compare to dynamic mic. Self noise is higher but it also have high headroom so it can handle loud noise the low cut pass should cut that self noise. If u have -10 db on the interface or low pass on the interface itself self noise shouldn’t matter. It’s only a ckr6 capsule which base of ck12 capsule but it’s still a phenomenal capsule. Only capsule that could beat it would be ck12 capsule if my next mic.
The OC16 is absolutely one of my favorite mics to use, especially for VO
I use AT4040 for clarinet recording, do you think the OC16 may be better in any way or similar?
I think you will get a similar sound. The OC16 might provide more warmth and richness at the bottom, and definitely a smoother tone overall. But you won't hear those differences without a good pair of headphones.
@@finloslives Thanks for the reply! I recently got the OC16 and made a comparison video. I'd like your opinion, please have a listen. ruclips.net/video/H0UVpBPxqOQ/видео.htmlsi=Pt7rij1k-c5u-lNN It seems the warmer sound is the AT4040 and OC16 is more neutral, capturing more details. I like both and can't decide which one should keep recording with. Audience opinions are valuable.
Did you make this video? Can’t find it on your page
I did make this one. Have any questions?
I would be interested to know what brand and model the pop shield is please?
I don't have a brand handy, but it is the pop shield that most companies sell to go with an RE20 or RE#320. It clamps on to the end. You might google "RE20 pop filter"
The AT2040 is a rather cheap microphone, but the Icon sounds infinitely better. It also sounds better than the Dynacaster and the Lauten Audio to my ears.
I think its tighter and cleaner than the dynacaster, but it might be a tossup with the Lauten. The Icon can be super harsh.
can we see a self noise test where you are silent? interested in the comparison between different price points
I don't have the at2021 any more, but I do have an at2020, which is rated to have the same/similar self noise. For comparison, though, the MK-012 has a self noise of 18db. I will do a self noise comparison of several mics at different price points for comparison.
Good to see love for these mics. Especially the Worker Bee. I loved the King Bee II so much that I got the WB2, which I also really enjoy and find it punches well above its weight. However, I just loved the look of the original WB and the integrated shock mount and I had to get one. The price had risen since they stopped producing them, but I don't miss the extra 40 bucks I spent on it and really enjoy everything about it. Meanwhile, in the right space (which I don't have right now) the KB2 remains the best sounding mic I've ever used.
You have almost convinced me to get a KB2
Both are really good for the price
I agree.
Thankyou for covering it ❤❤❤
Happy to keep doing so.
@@finloslivesdo you have prodipe tt1 ? It is cheap and with good reviews
Did you find some holy grail version in silver or is that the black model just looking shimmery and silvery due to your fancy lighting effects??? I would LOVE that mic in silver or raw metal form. Either way though it sounds beautiful. I do worry though that it might not sound as nice with my deeper voice....or MAYBE it might be perfect since it could keep the warmth and depth but bring some crispiness or brightness to the mids and highs.
Thanks for the comment. It is just lights on the black version, though a silver edition would be cool. I am going to do a full review which talks about this, but the high-pass filter is very effective on the ku5a... what I find myself doing is turning on the filter, and then getting closer to engage the proximity effect and it creates a more controlled bottom. Maybe that would work for you. I should have that review up later today, so hopefully you can hear what I mean.
I adore this mic. Have never heard it sound bad.
I am learning to use it well for my voice.
My room is totally untreated and not quiet, Could I record a clean recording from sE Dynacaster DCM8 or should I choose sE v7 with supercardiod pattern?
If you have the money, I would go for the DCM8 for the flexibility of sound, and its overall rejection. It's a little more forgiving. However, for the money the V7 is a quality handheld.
@@finloslives thank you for replying!!! I turn out at last using se v7 now. Happy testing it out now
Your review is clear, to the point, and nicely done Thanks for posting it. The comparison with the three other mics is stark. The DynaCaster has a pleasing smooth balanced sound. I purchased the DCM8 several weeks ago and have been more than pleased with it's sound and quality.
I am happy to hear that my review was helpful. This is probably my most used microphone.
That ML19 is on my bucket list
It's worth it if you ever have the opportunity. I always find myself coming back to it. It has a permanent place on my desk. And thanks for the sub. I am Paco from Tallahassee. I have showed up a few times on your channel.
Yessss. Subbed
Thanks boss. I have been keeping up with you more lately. I saw your recent video with a yoke-mounted condenser. I almost pulled the trigger on a similar model branded by Audix, but when I did some research I found they were the same models just with slightly different pop filters, but both from the same factory in china. It still sounds a treat, though.
