When it comes to Lincoln, the sum of his actions and words (some make me wince until I consider context) certainly accellerated an end to slavery. He is the only man in 1860 who could have achieved that. The overt abolitionists were unelectable, the Copperheads (Northern Democrats) and Firebreathers (Democrats of the deep south) would have permitted slavery's contituation for at least another generation if elected.
