Why? Do you know your neighbors, people in the closest retirement home, or homeless person outside the grocery store. Just because they are now talking to me or even calling for help why would that change? Helping 1 person is easy. Helping 8 billion is hard.

Would you also care about all those poor people you can't see or hear? Do you feel bad for the millions of homeless people and those in third world countries? Do you feel bad for the people who turned into zombies? Do you feel bad for the zombies, who can only feel gnawing hunger? Or are you a hypocrite? Feeling bad for everyone who is worse off than you is a quick path to depression, which could get you dead in the apocalypse. It's far healthier to be indifferent.
