Smashed up? There are two cemeteries in Dysart and something strange has happened to one of them
We were exploring Dysart for our @BroughtScotlandOnAShoestring episode and found out there are three graveyards there!! One is inaccessible but the other two more than make up for that.

Strathmiglo Cemetery just kept getting better and better!!

Saint Symphorien is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. Holding Commonwealth and German fallen from the early days of World War One it was styled on a country garden. Interestingly it holds the graves of the first and last British soldiers killed in World War 1. Not sure that's entirely true but it's a good story. You filmed the family grave monument of Niels Bohr, the father of atomic model and quantum theory, but you focused on his father, who himself was an eminent scientist and the father of modern physiology. That family grave alone has two Nobel laureates.
Thank you for the video. You have inspired me to visit! My GG Grandfather, Robert Campbell, is buried close to the building you mention at 6.10, where you speculate that it might have been a morthouse. This page on the cemetery, written by a team from St Andrew’s University, suggests that the mound was probably the site of the original Scoonie parish church, dismantled in 1775 when a new church was built down the hill in Leven itself. There are photos on that page of the structure when it was less grown over, and (in the notes) a comment from 1836 that the old church now forms “the family vault of the proprietor of Durie”. You were right about that. arts.st-andrews.ac.uk/corpusofscottishchurches/site.php?id=158882#RF_button
Did you walk round with your eyes closed? If you go through the main gates keep walking, give a wave to the left where my family graves are, go the the first road on the right look at the first grave on the right, can't remember the name but it's a guy who carried out 40 water rescues from canals/rivers etc. Carry on down the main 'road' to the 'roundabout, Look left, the HUGE monument is to the hero Mark Addy (1838-1890), awarded Albert Medal for saving over 50 people from drowning in the Irwell and died from infection from a rescue. look to the right, yes that grave adorned in red and white, the grave of Eddie Colman (1936-1958), Manchester United player killed in Munich air disaster. Go Back down the path alongside Mark Addy about 50m on the left is Charles Hallé (1819-1895), founder of Hallé Orchestra. Keep wombling round and you will also find graves of Four survivors of the Charge of the Light Brigade, William Norman (1832-1896), awarded Victoria Cross for courage in the Crimea War and Harold Riley the famous artist. If you're very clever, hunt around and look for a grave with a whole family who died and buried together as a result of a mass murder by poisoning by the husband /Father. Well worth a nice day out, a potted history to the greatness to my birth City.
My great grandmother was born in Carluke but left to get out of an arranged marriage .Hope to visit one day
Hi fellow scottish graveyard explorer 👍 I have been here and covered it on our channel it's such an awesome graveyard one of my favourites
Hiya!! We’re lucky to have so many amazing cemeteries :)
@PlacesForThePast oh I know there are so many cool places to visit!
Hmmm 🤔 LTJG is lieutenant junior grade. Have no idea what LTJX would be.
Found it!! LT=Lowestoft (home port), J=seaman or communications and X is something about being after 1930, pay scale related.
@@PlacesForThePastWow! You are the best! 👍🏼
Thanks for sharing your travels with us. Loved it!
Surprised there wasn’t a sign when there were so many Commonwealth war graves. Lovely to see the hedgehog 🦔 but very sad to see the destruction in the last cemetery.
Shame to see so many broken 😞 An amazing place though, what a great mix of designs. Such a cute wee hedgehog 😍
Lots of toadstools toward the end!
The last cemetery might be the town responsibility over a parish or church. If it belonged, people wouldn't think they could destroy. Certainly deserves more respect. Appreciate the find and share 🇨🇦
Thank you for filming that👍
lovely...rest in peace all💗
The tunnel thing was SPOOKY!
❤
the cuff just represents a woman and man clasping hands.
Very outstanding craftsmanship❤ rest in peace y'all😊
You find the BEST old grave yards!
What a beautiful day there!
Watched the video yesterday afternoon on the TV with Frank. Wow! Unreal chapel bits tour. I’m going to be a broken record and say… so much history. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.
Thank you for taking us to this graveyard.
What an amazing place! Thank you for taking us along for a visit. For some reason it made me think of a church in my area - it has an ossuary, though it’s only open to visitors during the summer months but definitely worth a visit if you’re ever passing through again. I think it’s called St Leonard’s, Hythe. I had no idea about it until one of my American friends was staying for a few days and googling interesting things to do.
Wow what amazing stones!
Beautiful! That's definitely added to the list for my next mainland adventure 🩷🩷🩷
❤ what an awesome place...love your videos !!! ❤
Always interesting to see the different jobs people did. Another lovely spot!
Nice!❤
I’m surprised that there isn’t a CWG sign at the entrance.
Awesome vlog! Thanks for sharing…
Thanks for showing us this graveyard with such a beautiful view. Amazing that those markers from 1690 & 1710 etc. were still legible! Always sad to see so many references to those lost in the wars as well as commonwealth war graves in these small communities, but so important to remember them!
I've enjoyed this wee incontinent ramble, as someone who has done a few graveyard rambles myself on my travels. I recommend Leadhills graveyard - from purely selfish reasons that I found another Robert Kay there. Its always awesome to see your own name on a tombstone.
Funny you should say that…
@@PlacesForThePast Believe it or not, there is a Robert Kay street in a new housing estate in Falkirk - I was a bit surprised - the local Cooncillor said it was named after a War Hero - a pilot with a Victoria Cross for bravery. So I checked the War records and found it was actually a teenaged pilot who was shot down on his first mission over Malta - by a German ace. Life, eh? Its tough to admit the truth, which is always more tacky than we like to imagine.
Just subscribed. You are taking me to places I will never visit. Where I live they would have nicked the ancient stones and then the metal protecting them.
Went here a few days ago, an amazing place. Another good one, and it's really close is Dalserf cemetery near Larkhall. Really interesting and I found a great uncle's grave
This guy finds the BEST PLACES. All the other sites do the same big places over and over...
Wow! So much history. Good to see the old Celtic slabs being protected for generations to see. Thanks for sharing… It’s a greyhound chasing a deer 😊
You might want to try bringing a flashlight. If you hold it against the stone, so the light shines across it, it makes it easier to read the inscriptions. Love your videos (on both channels).
Such a cool place, do love how they've protected the Celtic stones.
I also have distant family members in there...1823 to 1840😢
My aunt Margaret harris is buried there
There two survivors from the charge of the light brigade in Weaste Cemetery
Ooh, thanks. More digging required. Not literally :)
Fantastic place ❤
It really was.
Your exploration style of graveyards is spontaneous, full of surprises and FUN! Not boring and stuffy like a documentary.
Thank you!
Guessing the two large memorials were for the same family (Cheape)? That cross was amazing, what a lovely way to remember them by. I wonder if they all received the Victoria cross medal?
Maybe the backwards letters on those stones are a product of early dyslexia??
Possibly just down to the fact that the masons possibly weren’t literate? It’s interesting how some letters are joined together.
Your soup sounds delicious so I’m sorry it came back to haunt you. What a wonderful old cemetery and even a little mention of Dover. So sad that so many families lost so many children before they had a chance to grow up, but I’m glad they got a mention today.
An awesome jaunt around the graveyard. So much history. Well kept. Hmmm? Tastes good going down but don’t like tasting it later. Burp 😮😊 Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.
There's a very old cemetery in my county in Kentucky and a large proportion of the graves have backward 'n's ? I wonder why that was a thing?
Inscriber of those stones had dyslexia??
Soft brush and water spray bottle as you can damage the grave stone
I just suggested this on another video, there's some old one's here and also nearby at Glassford.
If you haven't already, I'd suggest St. Ninians old Kirkyard in Stonehouse, it's a beauty.
It is!!
