Repairing A 120 Year Old Clock With Lions On It, Like My Last Name!
Repairing A Cool Old New Haven Clock From 1910 or so. We're trying to keep some of the vintage electronics out of the landfill. Many times when something stops working, it can be repaired if someone will simply take the time to attempt to repair it. This channel documents our amateur attempts at repairing vintage electronics we think are cool.
We don't typically restore anything, we're just trying to get them working again. We've found that most of this stuff was well built and with a little help will start doing what it was intended to do.

    The 25B8GT is actually 2 tubes in one, so the radio is actually a 4 tube radio. one could consider the 50L6 a 1.5 tubes, sort of but definitly a electrically a 4 tube radio. VERY clever electrical design... 🙂

      50 degrees Celsius . I would tell you the Fahrenheit because that's what I typically use, but it's a cheap piece of crap ultrasonic cleaner from Chyna so of course it uses Celsius even though every body in the USA uses Fahrenheit. So whatever 50 degrees Celsius turns out to be.

    You might consider “Ax Wax” to use on the timber. They sell it in guitar shops and it’s used to clean and maintain the frets and neck on a guitar. I’ve used it on a variety of timber and it cleans and works great. Another very enjoyable clock repair video. Thanks Ronnie.

    The spring clamps go on by going in on an angle. Start with one end below the plate, turn it around the spring, and the other end should drop on to the spring when it clears the plate. I have a New Haven clock from the same time period that appears to be the same color, and it also has that crazing in the finish. As I understand it, the finish is likely shellac. Lacquer was starting to be used somewhere around 1920. You can check by wetting a small inconspicuous area with denatured alcohol. If the finish becomes sticky, it is shellac. I haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve heard that you can flood the finish with the alcohol and it will soften and re-harden to a smooth glossy finish. You can then used some 0000 steel wool to knock down some of the shine. I’ll probably try that at some point, but the crazing is not as extreme as you have.

    For me, it's not hideous. It's a bit spooky. Creepy. Looks like something hanging on a wall in the movie, "the haunting". The original. It's gothic looking. I've seen old finishes on musical intruments do that. I don't think it's intentional. It's age. Maybe lacquer?

    best thing is to open up the speakers and look on the speaker inside for its impedance-measuring DC resistance of a speaker lets you know if a speaker is open or not -dc resistance can be close to a speaker impedance but the 16 ohm is the speakers AC resistance -remember DC its resistance and AC is impedance

    • @AmateurRepairTime
      @AmateurRepairTime 8 дней назад

      surely you know, though, that it's very close and a convenient way to check. That time when you measure 8ohms resistance, but it's really 16ohms impedance will never get here. By the way, it's this kind of stuff that really makes people not like technically minded people. Yes, technically resistance checking it is different, but functionally it gives you very similar information since none of us have an impedance meter. I'll make sure to go on a rant about that, the next time I do speakers on anything.

    Thanks Ron! Always a pleasure to share your Amateur Repair time! :D Personally, I think he definitely got the better trade. Though, that you feel you got the better trade, means your certainly making the right trade (and both win, which is a nice rarity). Totally have to justify why I think he got the better trade though, lol. : It appears the radio you're trading is in more of it's original (unmodified) state, which I personally place more value upon; It feels like the restoration done, was such, that it drastically altered the radio's original aged state (which may have brought it looking closer to how it would have done when it was made perhaps, but then why not buy a modern reproduction if that's whats desired). So I guess, this makes it clear my own self state. I like things 'as they came' and honest (meaning, if it's aged, seeing its age). Though in a self double standard, it only applies to stuff that does age well (wood, metal, hard wearing plastics) and not to stuff which disintegrates into dust or sludge after some years (then I think that things which are a joy to own, mostly, are also of a quality which persists and defies time).
