Kayaker saves kayaker stuck in hole

Just come across this, well done for sticking it out, being very new to WW and only a man made centre, I am yet to put myself into one of the holes there, its scary and being early 50's makes me less gung-ho than i would have been 20 years ago lol. I too have had the naysayers on my videos. If i was to guess, you were relatively new at that time and went into the session knowing that you may hit a hole but I also suspect that you wasn't doing it alone and knew you had folk there to assist, well done for pushing yourself out of your comfort zone :)
Hey Christopher, do you have an email address at which we could contact you regarding this video? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible? (i.e. via email) :) Cheers, Felix

If he had rolled would that have popped him out?
probably. I recently got caught in a hole but there was no tongue I could get to. Ended up windowshaded and flushed, then rolled up.
0:22 Is that Donald Duck? 😂😂😂
And now he approaches a river-wide ledge....
That was frustrating just to watch. sadffsdafdsfdfdfsafghrgrerehehwerrrrrrrrrrrr
Yep, that's how to do it. All beginners should practice the "buddy roll/assist" just in case. It is a lot better to assist someone than chase them, their boat and paddle down the river. That adds confidence for the beginner paddlers and results in a steeper learning curve. I once rescued my friend on the Nolichucky in a long rapid. He was so surprised, and that allowed us to finish the river without a river rescue. Good job.
Something similar happens with low head dams
Its called a hydraulic jump
I know he was struggling.. feel bad, but with a freestyle boating background I couldn't help but laugh
Waaaahooo was that his I'm an idiot warcry
I'd consider the guy in the green boat SUPERMAN!
Not even a thank you
Yeah...I am gonna stick to slowwwww moving rivers and lakes, I don't need this in my life :P Got enough hair raising, adrenaline rushes from the local traffic.
Argh argh argh WAHOOO
Potential Drowning…. Sounds like fun!
Amazing! Without help he would run out of steam and possibly be in a mercy of a nature. Never go on rivers like that alone!
You got some cool friends that was crazy
As a novice just watching this made my heart rate jump up 20bpm
There are ways out of that situation. Explore them.
You call it a hole, I call it a surf spot. I'm jealous.
My foot got stuck between some rocks one time when I was kayaking. One more step the current could have took my life never underestimate nature.
I would have happily played in that all day. Couple of draw strokes or a roll and he would be fired out. Clowns
Just don't look like fun 🤪
If a kayaker saves a kayaker stuck in a kayaking hole, how many kayakers would it take to kayak back to the kayaking hole to save the other kayakers stuck kayaking back to the kayaking hole?

All the gear and no idea much??? IR deck and Werners but he can’t paddle out of a hole
Yeah some edge training would be good. e.g lean on the right edge on flat water while paddling only on the right side keeping the body straight up and try to paddle in a straight line.... but sometimes you just gotta style it out with some magic moves if the hole is big enough!... haha.. I got stuck in a deep hole with a hugh tongue in front of me could not get any speed to get up onto the tongue it was no possible.. it was like a half of meter in height difference between the hole i was in and the tongue... Gotta good beating in that bad boy. got flushed out once i flipped a few times boat was doing all the back flips and front flips i was just a passenger at that stage.. good times..
This is why I recommend people do freestyle kayaking. It teaches you a lot of things that are helpful in river running like exiting sticky holes. It also gives you a shit ton of roll practice.
There is no Meadow River near Ohiopyle that I'm aware of.
Way to ride it out bro..and, selfless confident rescue TL. water level pretty good, a swim could have been long.
good video of a beginner kayaker having a good old fashion hole rodeo, Having done this myself a few times I can understand the challenge he was facing but in reality one or two windowshades or an ender and he would have popped right out, or simply dig a bit deeper and get to the downriver flow. That wasn't a particularly retentive hole, Its all part of the learning curve when paddling whitewater, but this is a good example of how different padding disciplines can potentially help out, a dedicated playboater would have been able to pop themselves out of that hole instantly.
skip to 3:40 to see a similar incident where a windowshade can pop you out ruclips.net/video/-AhH9SXVG-w/видео.html
Yep. I have seen a lot of people getting into the sport with no interest in playboating, just river running. Playboating teaches you a fuck ton about kayaking though, from edge control to exiting holes, to ferry angles and lots of roll practice.
Also the other side of the hole looked very very easy to get out of.
He didn't panic. He fought and stayed strong. He grabbed the other kayak. Pretty awesome for a "beginner."👍🏽
@@farmshopprojects What is a windowshade?
Please don’t go out again. Your not cut out for it. That’s a how you panic yourself to death. You were doing everything you could to stay in the hole.
dope
Opinion. That was a dangerous maneuver by the other kayaker to also move into the hole. They could have bother been inadvertently stuck
Nah. An experienced boater could work out of that hole easily. There is an obvious tongue right in front of the stuck paddler that the other was trying to coach him to hook up with. The stuck boater was not good enough to do it.
Too many people underestimate the power of water
What a fight. Chapeau!
Kayaking would be a blast they said. So much fun they said. Lol Nice save
One roll and he would have been out.
Yeah
Reason #... not to kayak....alone.
I feel like only one of those guys is prepared for that water.
I mean did you see how long and proper he had to hold that brace for id say hes prepared just needed a little assistance
You also have to look at the kayak types. The kayaker assitingg had a big creeker with lots of volume while the kayaker who got in trouble had a slicy river running.
@@brianmccormack6575 looks very boring
A weeks worth of thigh master workouts
For sure! Most holes are easy to paddle out of (especially low angle ones), but he dropped right into a frowny. Still.... in some holes you're swimming regardless. He had excellent edge control and a solid brace, but he was too afraid to let go of the brace... to really try and paddle out the side. An angled forward stroke is still an effective brace. This coming from a guy who spent my first two years getting pummelled by every hole I came across. It's an amazing workout. Play boater six pack. 💪
@@pharma37 I was gonna say, he did good at staying upright, but you have to put strokes in closer to the feet and really pull to escape the hole.
@@connorcoultas9629 sometimes you can just bury the nose, and go for a pirouette.
@@pharma37 Definitely but that’s a lot more intimidating. River right side of the hole looked like an easy escape as well
@@connorcoultas9629 No matter who you are, you're going to be swimming out of a lot of holes, before you become great at playing in them.
what a ass kicker. That a low head dam?
Loved this footage
Nice save
That is reckless and dangerous
That's the sport. Having said that.... he should have been aware of the proper line, had a safty with a rope on the bank, or just have portaged around. Never paddle blind.
Just like a lot of sports. Turns out life is pretty dangerous in general.
Its actually not too bad. This doesn't look too retentive... worst that could've happened is the kayaker swimming downriver and every good kayaker should know how to swim to safety in a white water river.
@@pharma37 Reckless and dangerous to be in that kind of river without the skills to get out of a hole like that. Freestyle skills will save you in those situations.
@@tommusik5863 freestyle skills would help people in a lot of situations in the river. However, I see a lot of people drift into freestyle later on, and not really in their first few years. When they start, they want the big boat. They then want the boofs. Then they want the creeks. They have an incident that scares or injures them, so they take a break, then buy a slicy boat to have fun on easy stuff, only then do they discover the real fun of waves and holes.... instead of trying to avoid them. I just don't see lot of people starting off with a playboat. It'll either make them quit very quickly before coming into their own out there, or they'll end up being better than the boater next to them. It's a toss up
way to keep after it man good job
