Broke my heart to hear the squadron got decommissioned. This was my last duty station while I was in....to this day a good part of me wishes I'd re-upped.
Work with them in what way? Generally speaking not really very much if any. I was a rescue swimmer crewman in the 90s and i never did. Usually these guys do insert and extract of various types of spec ops but most always SEALs or SDV team. SWCC kinda does the same thing alot except they use various boats and such plus SWCC does alot of patrols and such with SEALs also. This squadron you are seeing is a unique one that it and there sister squadron solely do spec war support. They use door gunners dress in camo and are in high combat deployments. They can fly from a carrier but usually dont. Their main mission is spec war support unlike other helo squadrons that may do sub warefare or mines or whatever mostly. I dont know if it has changed but back in the day when they were hcs4 and 5 in the 90s this was actually a naval reserve tar squadron. Pilots were reserves and most of the crew and members of the squadron were active duty full time but designated Navy reserve for some strange reason. You damn sure wouldnt know it by the way they operated trained or missions they were sent but seriously they were a reserve squadron. Perhaps this changed when they become hsc84 85 after i left the Navy in the early 90s right when hcs4 &5 began.
Im gonna tell ya guys i was a rescue swimmer crewman also and i know what you are saying but i got a friend whose son is the 160th. Those guys really have took things to another level. Plus the way they have apaches chinooks lil birds black hawks etc all under the same command and they technology they just have the best of everything those guys do. They really hating to say it but they just do a helluva job. Really they do.
