​@@decibelboy83 Poly D is better, in my opinion, in every aspect. MOOG is simply a way overpriced piece of old equipment that belongs in a museum. Poly D took the best of MOOG and upgraded it to a whole new level (not to mention the price)-something MOOG should have done a long time ago. Instead, they decided to cater to snobbish middle-aged fanboys with extra money in their pockets. The policy that shut down the entire MOOG business, IMO.

I've toyed with the idea of this, but sampling has never really been part of my creative flow, so worry that I'd just be binning the cash

@@decibelboy83 I'm not a sampler either. I'm used to a studio recording approach as a guitarist and vocalist. I just changed my mindset and looked at the SP from a music composition point of view. If you can see "sampling" as simply recording your musical ideas...everything changes. The lack of any screen to look at is of great value to me as well.

I'm so glad this has resonated with you. I really kinda double checked myself about posting it as it seemed to be a bit of a weird topic, but I've had a couple of comments similar to yours so I'm really glad I did post it. I've been on a two year journey with my mental health which has really heavily impacted what I do musically and where I am right now as stated in this video has definitely come about as a factor of that. All I can say is, if you have any desire at all to do music, then just do it and be truthful to yourself when you do.

It's something I've thought about for twenty years or so, and now i'm 50...In my early 30s I'd lie awake lamenting that by the time they were my age my hero's had several albums and success under their belts. I also suffered awful stage fright but continued to play, sometimes on small support tours in larger uk venues and abroad, and apart from the camaraderie with fellow band mates generally found myself dreading each night. My motivation was ego driven, longing for success and relevance. Then one day after a short stint of gigs away from my young family having drunk way too much and suffered massive anxiety and paranoia, I thought fk it, I'm done. I still haven't done anything myself of note, but i have a shed studio of sorts and live with the hope that one day soon i'll get started, and it will be for nobody else but me. The music i'd like to make.🤞😎

Christian what you've written just there is almost exactly what my journey was too. I had started taking being sick to miss rehearsal and then one day just was like why am I even doing music? So I stopped for a solid six months. I then saw a video of someone using the OP1 and that inspired me to get one and from that was birthed a whole new path for me. I began making music purely for the sake of making music with no thought of it being for anyone else. At some point in that journey I realized that I missed playing in a band, but joined a country band playing covers which is just for fun. I'm really happy to have you here.

@@decibelboy83 Yes that is the first of 4 of that guys Siren head videos, I watch yesterday and today. Also about six months ago I was watching videos on backrooms with Siren Head, and then some giant Siren head videos. I don't know where that thing comes from originally, but there is a sound your making that sounds similar.

Yes that last sentence is exactly the hat I was trying to sum up. The limitations of the equipment strangely forces you to be creative with the tools that you do have available, rather than loading up another plugin or buying another module etc. I've not played with samplr and haven't used Reason in almost 20 years, I can't imagine how good it is now, it was cool back when I last used it!

@@decibelboy83 Samplr is the best iPad app full stop. Reason is still pretty good if a little complex these days but you can make it as deep as you want. It’s great for testing real world ideas before spending on hardware, as a nice multi track recorder or creating small systems to play with it is crazy versatile but still after 20 years I occasionally find myself going how the hell do I do that but a quick RUclips tutorial usually does the job .

Is it any good if you don't like sampling?

I think GAS can be seen as the killer of making music though. It becomes more about the collection than what the collection creates.

Yeah and even go further than this. Every time you think, darn I need that bit of gear, note the price then spend 10% of it on something that promoted your artist profile. IE make some merch, get a better website etc.

Audio Damage Eos 2 is another great auv3 reverb. Under the hood it’s a Valhalla reverb engine.

​@@decibelboy83 Preface: I record Vangelis style, I perform a completed song in one take, no overdubbing using pattern sequencers and sample loops I record myself to fill in when both hand and feet are too busy. So I have 5 stations I can sit at and just rotate my chair in the middle to each one, plus able to play across stations too. all DAWless, use a 24 track hardware recorder. Minilogue (original) Minilogue XD MicroBrute 1010 Music BlackBox Sampler Juno DS Korg Krome Yamaha MX49 as a controller Roland Fantom O6 Roland RD-2000 Kurtzweil VAST/FM/KVA synth Roland Gaia Roland Gaia 2 Boutiqe (JP-08)(JX-03)(JD-08)(JX-08) Yamaha DGX-670 piano (solo piano only) Korg Electribe2 Yamaha RefaceDX Roland E-A7 (MIDI controling 5 synths) Many of these synths work together as one synth in layer/split, such as the Kurzweil and all the boutiques.

@@iamjamessmith Yea, ha ha :) it would seem that way, but I have been a musician for 56 years, and been buying gear for 50 of those years, what I have today represents a lifetime of buying and selling. And in 2006 lost my entire vintage studio to divorce. After the divorce lived in poverty and the only instruments I could afford was cheap Casio, and most of that was used. I made music with this junk for 16 years before finally, over the years, replacing it all last year. It has been a long time since I had good instruments. I am a professional solo acoustic pianist, so it is important to have different actions at home. I have 3 digital pianos so I can adapt to stage pianos easier, I have to play whatever is on stage. (most all the music on this channel was made by that Casio stuff).

My original comment was to reduce buying gear by having complete understanding of everything each of your synths can do. Using creative design instead of pre-sets. Presets are the biggest reason for GAS. I can listen to a new synth and know I can create that sound with a synth I have, or a combination of synths layered. Hence, no need to buy it.

I'm not sure. I'm not sure if you can lift off tape and drop into the sampler on the original op1.

Hey hey! Thanks for leaving a comment I know the GAS guilt well. I've got a Behringer Poly D in a case that I can't see ever using again and I wish it could go to a better home. I also know that at some point I'll really want that Moog sound and then I'll be glad I've still got it. The iPad, well, AUM, fugue machine and some of the rozetta sequencers have been an absolute revelation to me, I can be creative anywhere now and be really inspired within that environment and no one knows that I'm making music. That being said, the thought of playing live with it seems very very boring, so now I'm sort of building a hardware twist on it. It's all a journey and good fun!

@@decibelboy83 Yeah FTR i pronounced it terrible for a long time lol, its often hard to internalize the rules of asian languages for western speakers, the systems are very different. And if you dont know its japanese then anyone'd def pronounce it wrong.

What else is there?! I just obviously. I should add, that I do have a whole logic rig as well and for the last twenty five years have made my music fully in the DAW, so I'm not averse to using a DAW, it's just for this particular journey into electronic music I'm really talking about.

Yeah I think three is the maximum. Hainbach said a sentence which I can't remember but was basically, your rig should be a system that becomes one instrument that you can play and I really vibed with that idea. My next video is basically going to be on that concept.

I know, it's ridiculous isn't it. Although I have to say, it's more than just the piano, it's the piano, with the west coast synthesis and then the slow speed looping and then cassette tape sound that really finishes it off.

Absolutely! I feel like I've turned a real corner on my journey. I've been looking for the sound for a long time and now I have found it!

What are the parts of your hardware and names of iPad software if I can ask?

From the front... The white keyboard is the mellotron micro this plugs into a Behringer 4 channel interface. The two similar size black boxes are the Make Noise 0ctrl and 0 coast. Then feed out via a little device that sells from a.company called Synth UX academy. You build them yourself from a lot and upload your own firmware to it. That's doing all the reverb and delay for the make noise rig. This then feeds out via a Bastle Bestie mixer and then into another two channels on the Behringer. The iPad is running AUM as the host for the plugins. It basically is like a virtual mixer. I have a few Eventide reverb plugins, but mostly use the Blackhole one. Then I use Gauss and Fluss which are made by Bram bros. Both record and playback loops but Gauss is more of a tape looper whereas Fluss is actually a granular instrument. These then feed out via a plugin called Reelbuss which is a tape emulation plugin, but I really abuse it to add noise and make it all sounds a bit more like it's a cassette.

Most of it is understandable for me. But building them by yourself from scratch and loading your own firmware? Hm there I’ve lost 🥴😂

That one of the most fun bits I think. Then you kinda know you've got sounds that no one else does. Next on my list is to build a very tactile controller for another synth I have.
