My little antedote is a bit amusing I guess, but I've never forgotten the hurt and shame I felt ... Married for 6 years and determined to be the best wife ever.. my mom had married 3 times, each time we got a new dad the house rules changed, different school, church and search for friends. I will never get a divorce I said. There was a belly dancing class at the YMCA, I signed up, wanting to impress my husband. Made my own costume with all the sequins and little bells. Learned how to roll my hips and belly trying to appear seductive..lol I bought a Little Egypt album and planned the surprise for my husband ! I started the music, got dressed in my scarves and tinkling jewelry , and swayed my way into the living room where my husband was sitting in his red-neck orthopedic device ( recliner ) His response ? He didn't just laugh, he guffawed...on and on. He thought it was hilarious, I was mortified. ( divorced him 15 years later..had enough ) 🌷

You can read a little about it here: mkculture.blogspot.com/2009/07/ She said that she confronted him at age 40 and they never spoke of it again. By age 47, she was struggling a lot and that is when her father passed away. It sounds like she hadn't abandoned him but there was a little distance right before he died.

I saw a documentary about your story today. As it has been with many others, I can relate to it. My story differs in that I was neglected and malnourished as a child. As a result, my body was run down and very thin from about three years of age. When I was 6, I had tonsillitis, chicken pox, strep and measles. Because of the malnutrition, I also had a mini stroke. This paralyzed one of my vocal cords and create a partial blockage in my airway. The story gets more complicated from here-but I realized from your experience with your mother that no one was for me. No one had my back. I lived in shame. Today, I am handicapped. I didn’t succeed in anything in life. Thank you for sharing your story. It helped me feel connected just a little.

I just had this revelation recently at 64 yrs old. When i was young my mom told me don’t get involved in anything unless you know you can win. Since I didn’t have confidence i stopped trying. Fortunately some teachers encouraged me to do things because they believed i could. I did excel beyond my lack of self esteem because i held on to a quote from Les Brown (motivational speaker & author) which was “if you can’t believe in yourself, believe in someone who believes in you!” This has been a Godsend! It kept me going but most of the time when big opportunities came my way i just couldn’t breakthru the thoughts i had of myself. I was offered a book deal on something i was working on - i was scared but jumped in it. Then a bunch of major obstacles all came at the same time. I gave up the house I worked so hard for bcz my abusive alcoholic husband said he would give me custody of our son who is autistic & he had began hitting him & threatening to break his hands. I didn’t blink an eye & said yes. Despite losing so much money & ending up in a shoe box, it was worth it to keep my son safe. Other things happened too & also ended up in the hospital for 3 weeks with covid fighting for my life. I have long covid now for 2 years which has also given me covid brain & I struggle with major cognitive functions. I cried cause I couldn’t write. I tried not to think about it, i contemplated just letting that dream go. After several meds etc. i can write a text like this but it takes me forever. I hope it makes sense & sorry for the lengthiness as editing is super hard. The things i write about has helped many & so i try & decided if it takes me forever, so be It. Word by word, sentence by sentence, & probably a whole lot of editing so it makes sense, i will keep trying. I realized that i may not be a natural writer but the message is important so i will find a way. And medically i will keep trying to find a way to recover. Your video is so on point & sheds light on how others were able to breakthru. And it doesn’t have to be a natural ability! Despite a number of things i also went thru as a kid... i survived a lot!!! And kept trying. Despite the down days, you have given me inspiration to fight another day. Thank you for your brave story on another video of yours & this one!!!! And even though I discovered the concept of this video myself just recently, i believe in you bcz you believe in US! Thank you so much Marilyn for making such a huge difference in our world! Much love to you & your husband & daughter (& family)! 💜🙏✨✨

I’m trying to figure this out. I had many dreams.. But it seems my greatest achievement will have to be surviving sexual abuse. First you have to survive.. before a dream can happen. My mother would tell me ‘don’t bother trying’ and when I did, she made sure to sabotage anything I was excelling at. My mother wasn’t very talented, she hated that I was.

I love you Marilyn VanDerbur. You simultaneously bring me to tears and inspire me every time you speak. I thought about you this very morning, as I experienced my sleep-to-wake epiphany. I thought about how I have given up on making myself pretty, presentable, and caring for myself.
