William (Bill) Heenan Interview Crane Driver
Interview with Bill Heenan, a Greymouth Wharf Cranes driver from the 1950's. Bill is in his 90's when doing this interview about his recollections of working at the Wharf in Greymouth. He also did diving in one of those fully enclosed dive suits with the metal sphere on the divers head. Bill says that the Grey River was often murky when they had to dive but that was OK as he had 10 eyes!

Great footage of workers loading coal from rail Q wagons into ships. You'll see the ships taking up the whole river width to turn around. There is also some river dredging with crane grapple to keep the ships berths deep enough. And at the end some kids yachting in the lagoon

I found this fascinating, but was disappointed by the extremely distorted soundtrack, from which I got no info. At all.

Yes, this is Greymouth New Zealand. The Greymouth Heritage Trust is currently rebuilding these cranes. We are also having built a Virtual Reality Experience where you put on a headset and it makes you think you are a crane driver in the crane loading and unloading ships in the 1950’s. It’s even got a radio station playing 1950’s music hosted by Ray Rythm on Radio GHT.
