The Idiot's Approach
Добавлен 16 ноя 2022
A documented brute-force approach to woodwork, remodeling, metalwork and random DIY in the pursuit of learning. You could maybe call me a "maker", but I'll try to DIY just about anything and this channel will cover my random projects in the shop and around the house.

Camera angle wasn't perfect and we had some problems with one cable leading to the cakes (I did a crappy last minute splice job on it). Otherwise The Boom Box worked well on it's first run.

A big rustic table the WBBS crew and I put together. It all started a year ago but unfortunately life and other projects got in the way. We used cherry to build the breadboard top and reclaimed rough oak barn poles to build a trestle style base.

Genmitsu LC-50 Plus Assembly and Initial Testing
Great safety video. I’m guilty of every thing you said except the riving knife, I curse it on every cut.
I think mine lasted about a month before i took it off🤣
Why not use the kickback guards. I’m new to this…I bought a used TB…no guards. Why do people take these off? Thanks
Mostly stupidity. But they tend to bind or catch on things when you're cutting, which can cause some safety issues of their own. If you're new to it then leave them on and get used to working around the issues they may cause.
Okay Thx for the info
No prob
Riving knife? You mean that's not a baby shark trying to outrun the blade?
Practically synonymous
Do you have anything that's more than one year? I'm currently running Lightburn with my other three diode lasers but my new one does not work with Lightburn it works with.Alternative software to Bslapp / is LaserGRBL compatible. With Z5-1 Fiber Laser but yesterday it was going crazy when I was trying to use it and getting all kinds of warning messages.
Very cool tutorial. Thanks for taking the time.
No prob. I try to post things I'm trying to learn myself and can't find concise videos on.
Looks great! Picked up some good tricks here, thank you
Glad I could help! Thanks for watchin.
Many Amish do their ceilings under porches etc with this
Ive been wanting to make a wooden chair that I can screw 2 eye bolts into a tree (vertically) (back of the chair on the trunk of the tree) and clip them in and sit hanging in a shady tree and look at memes, listen to music or read a book
Sounds like an awesome idea.
@theidiotsapproach You have alot more of wood work in your experience than I do. Would this idea be worth trying out?
Sure, start simple. Maybe make a smaller version of the swing build I recently posted.
Do not use the ER college set up, use the 2 MT college and you’ll have a very accurate machine.
Excellent. Thanks for the tip!
Can you share the Software Installer LaserGRBL 4.9?
lasergrbl.com/download/
Something doesn't look right, Bud.
Probably several things. You're talkin to THE Idiot🤣. But it's been up more than a year and hasn't leaked yet.
@@theidiotsapproach I'll try it then... Thank you!!
If DIY is the only way you can get it done and its a short run this should work. Mine just got a torrential dowpour about a month ago. Washed out our culvert and most of the driveways nearby but the gutter hadnt leaked yet lol.
Super cool build! A small tip for you when soldering wires together like you did @ 13:14, try weaving your wires together for a stronger connection, and then apply heat using the iron from one side of the splice and feed solder from the opposite side. It'll cause the solder to wick into the wire instead of forming a lumpy connection. You can also use rosin core for small splices like this in lieu of flux, but a little extra flux never hurts to make sure those joints flow properly. Again, kudos on the build!
Hell yea. Thanks for the tip!
Using RJ-45 for this was really creative, Cool project!
Thanks!
Great build, bit of a bumpy process lmao
Lol no doubt. Thanks!
Dude you rock for making your own ignition system!
Lol thanks. Its really pretty basic, prob try a wireless one at some point.
Looks great, make sure to have a good ol 4th of july
Thanks! You too.
w build
Thanks!
nice
Thanks!
Just noticed the parts for this Porter Cable multi tool is nearly identical to the craftsman which I got. Thanks to your humble video I got the chance to open mine up to attempt stabilizing the spindle shaft that wobbles on me. (LOL I put a wrap of rubberband for shock absorption. It knocked down the wobble in more than half. Hahaha but I can't say I'd make that "professional" advice! It was free and now it's worth something in my workshop.) Thanks!
Lol hell yea! Free is always better.
Looks great and comfy. The rounded front and closer slats made a big difference. I’m tinkering with a process of wax dipping ( over simplified, deep frying wood in wax ) once dipped/ fried the wood will last 20 + years out in the element without paint. Being wax impregnated paint, glue, bubble gum, bird shit won’t stick to it. You got my gears turning! Thanks for sharing
I'd like to see some wax fried/dipped wood. Post a video if you get it worked out.
Sorry, I don’t do videos. But search how to wax dip beehives. You will find a lot of info on it. I gotta build a vat and burner. Trying to figure out how big to make it? The bigger the vat the more it cost to fill it up with wax. That’s the part that gets expensive. Look into it.
Def gonna check it out
Sir, if you don't feel confident in a repair you're approaching, I would still like to learn from the bold decision and lessons you learn along the way. I think your humility makes your attempts important for character and the process of attempting to take on something new- a valuable one. God bless you man. Keep it up!
Thank you!
That. Was manly. 👍
🤣
Beautiful machines. I have a Clausing 8530 vertical mill with OEM x axis power feed. I also have a Clausing lathe, 10" by 36" 4911. My mill and lathe were made within one year of each other. I would love to see any upgrades you come up with for your mill(:
I did get the x-axis powerfeeding working on the mill. Been slowly working on the reed-prentice lathe too. I've had a lot going on, currently out of country, but hoping to get more progress posted this summer.
Good job man
Thanks!
How do you like it so far?
It's been capable of everything i've needed it for so far. Got the powerfeed working. Drawbar nut has been a pain because its warn and misshaped but would be an easy fix if I'd take the time.
Is that head stock supposed to be dry? Generally they are filled with oil which that rats nest tells me was not the case here.
These dont have oil baths, in fact the headstock casting is open at tbe bottom. It uses oilers, at least 2 of which need replaced/are missing.
@@theidiotsapproach Ah. Interesting. Guess that explains how the mice got in.
Butthead- Uh huh huh huh...uh huh huh huh.... he said "head". Beavis- Yeah! Yeah! and "shaft"!
🤣🤣 jesus
That looks amazing
Thanks!
This is what Brad Pit quit doing movies for?😂
🤣🤣 That's a low blow to poor Brad. Fortunately he'll never know.
tip: spot glazing is not for structure repairs (resin and chop strand mat is) and also gel coat is not for structure either
Lol wellllll hopefully this doesnt catastrophically fail. The biggest crack wasn't unstable or moving significantly prior to repair. Good thing it wasnt the pan or the lips.
Ran across this while looking for some info on my 14x48 R-P I picked up recently. I'm looking forward to watching along as I'm elbows in my own
I've got some more to post. Just havent had time to edit it yet.
Part link?
www.amazon.com/dp/B0BCJXCGQS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share We had an issue with fitment on the first part we ordered, slightly different machined profile on the sides that wouldnt fit. I believe this was the second one that we ended up installing. Just something to be aware of.
Man you looks smack like Neal McDonough, video was helpful btw!
🤣🤣. Glad to help!
Got a 2020 im replacing right now with 76k amost the same harness, and wiring has moved on top. At the part now. This job was a drag. I got the official dorman all aluminum replacement. I dont plan to do this again. Lol
Lol yea. Thank god I had zack to do it. I'd have made a mess and taken 3x as long.
Days before I retired, I sold off my Bridgeport. Too big for what I do in my home shop & taking too much space. I downsized to a Clausing 8530 mill. Love it.
Nice. Gives me more confidence in the investment. It's very likely this'll do everything I ever need to do.
It's a pulley not a sheath
Sheave, or "shiv" depending on who u ask. The systems itself is a pulley (including the belt or rope and any blocking) the grooved wheel that rides on the shaft and holds the belt or rope is a sheave.
Nice machine.🔧⚒️🔩
Thanks! Pretty excited about finding this one.
It's a great little mill. When you do end up getting a bigger one you'll still find it handy for second op stuff
Yea, I don't see myself ever gettin rid of it. And I'm totally new to machining so if I'm honest with myself I don't need a big mill right now. Lol that lathe I drug home is really too much machine for my needs even.
Every man’s dream lol in machining anyway
I was def lucky to have just basically stumbled onto it.
It's amazing what one can accomplish in TinkerCAD with no experience. A little creative use of the alignment tool and some grouping goes a long way!
That's no exaggeration, I have very little experience with it and have designed several prints and laser projects with tinkercad.
What was the mileage on the engine when you were doing the change
Probably around 100k or just under.
The vast majority of these failures are the 5 min oil change places over wrenching on that top housing bolt for oil filter. Put a white sharpie mark on that housing to match up correct sealing surface.
Good tip. Thanks!
Was hoping to see how you ran the power cord in the bottom drawer. I like the idea of putting the charging shit out of sight and out of the way. Thanks for sharing.
Used a spade bit to cut a hole in the back of the drawer. My mistake on the backing worked in my favor and i was able to run and extension cord into the drawer from the back. I'll post a follow up when I have all the printing done.
Tell you what, that wobbly base was driving me crazy. Could you post a follow up? Did the blade come out nice and sharp?
Yea its a huge pain, if i had space to leave it out i'd secure it to a flat surface. But it works well for the money. Ive reground and reused several blades. I'll try and do a short follow-up before long.
What tools do you need to do this? I'm about to replace mine this coming weekend
I reponded to @coolbeans8607's same question about 7 months ago. Should be right above your comment in the thread.
I'm looking forward to seeing some progress on that.
She's runnin, but not well. Next episode will be breaking down the headstock to clean and replace some bearings. Spindle control linkage from the apron needs some fixing too.
whats the cost of a job like this?
$200-300 for parts. Labor would probably be around twice that depending on location, etc.
700-1000 I just left the mechanic shop having the same issue.
I'd just took my to ammco.....1950 usd buddy, seems like I'm doing it myself after all😅
Lol that's friggin outrageous.
Thanks, not so many tutorials inkscpae/laserGRBL together. I draw some lines and circles with different stroke width on inkscape, so that I can engrave on MDF with LM pro 2, but when I open the inkscape .svg file on LaserGRBL, I get all shapes same stroke width. I tried path-object to path for each line and circle, I am not sure if I need to group all lines and circles together on inkscpae before I open them with Lasr GRBL, I tried everything that I lost track on all possibilities and steps I tried.
13:12 *Thumbs-up for the folding laundry video*
Lol it's terrible work.
Che merda
🤣🤣 why thank you!
Nice build, maybe you can change the plexi to a protective screen, can be important when handeling reflective materials :)
Yea, that's a good idea. Honestly hadn't considered it but I've seen it done in other builds.
