Hi Meagan, I had this hand a few weeks ago and I wondered if I bid it correctly or if my partner miss interpreted my response. East - S-q9833 D-aq763, C-k86 West- S-aj105 H-j82 D-52 C-aj43 East opens 1S West response 2C All pass , final contact 2C I think we both bid wrong. What’s your thoughts?

Pretty obvious. You have 7 tricks on top without the Diamond suit which will provide at least 3 more tricks when DA is knocked out - 4 unless the Diamonds are 5-0 ' Offside '.

59:36 - just because south opens 1NT - that does not deny a 5 card major - most players open 1nt with a 5 card major these days

51:35 - this is just a 7NT bid - if you have 37 points between the two hands - just bid 7NT...I think you are potentially confusing people with this hand.

43:10 this is 100% a quantitative bid from north and not blackwood - you want to play this in 4NT rather than 5H. the North hand would pass 4NT as their 20 count is not the best 20 count in the world. You don't want to be in 5h missing two aces and occasionally getting a 5-0 heart break.

Real teachers use whiteboards. I gave up on the game because nobody was willing to ease me in with no-nonsense whiteboard lectures which is how I learn.

No to hand 12. If you have to open this ropey 10-count, then open 1C and you can rebid 1S if partner responds 1D or 1H.If it goes 1S and partner responds 2D or 2H you are not strong enough to make a high reverse of 3C and have to rebid 2S - not ideal. So open 1C or pass this poor quality hand.

28:20 example is almost guaranteed slam. If you’re going to present an approach that is this simplistic, I think you need to mention that it is an oversimplified strategy for beginners.

I am a bridge teacher in a 55+ community in Florida. I was planning to use these materials to teach beginner bridge. I was very disappointed to find there were no hands to go with the material. I was planning to have my students purchase the book, watch the video and play practice hands that went along with the lesson. The defense lesson is nicely designed to do this. Really sorry this isn't going to work out for us.

In case 2, where partner leads the 2♠ and you have ♠KJ6...isn't it likely that the lead signifies partner has the Q♠& is leading fourth highest from an honour: you know where the other honours are?

I heard that the partnership could have an agreement, with AK, depending on which is led, it sends a message; e.g. from AK doubleton.

How best to play AQx opposite Txx? ATx opposite Qxx? Axx opposite QTx? Would having a seventh, eighth or ninth card in the suit make a difference? KJTx opposite xxx? KJxx opposite Txx? Kxx opposite JTxx? There is a free downloadable program (Windows only) called suitplay.exe that shows best line of play for any suit combination you key in.
