    I was watching another well known pole barn builder do this a while back and couldnt wrap my brain aroumd why he didn't leave a back tab like you did here. He just depended on housewrap behind it to keep it dry. Good metal detail requires very little to no sealant. Nice work

      @chrisdonnellybuilder I have issues with the one I bought 2 years ago, it struggles at best to sink the head even through pine 18mm skirting and architrave on the lowest setting. I don't rate them at all. It strange because the milwaukee framing nailer I use is a beast. Great video mate. Cheers

    Not bad stuff but why not just use foam? Thats how ive been doin it for a while not to mention holes are usually not straight and same width

      As a general rule, builders from different nation groups have different strengths and weaknesses. This isn't to insult or defame. American construction tends to favour weaker and cheaper materials than international counterparts while focusing on significantly better seals and gaskets, they often have access to obscure chemical technologies made by their world leading chem industry. Conversely commonwealth nations (excluding Canada) opt for better building materials but fall short of their American counterparts quality seals. Lacking the chemical based solutions to issues, other solutions like reworking process or opting for hardware based solutions, occurs instead

      New Zealand Based , I'm following industry guidelines for this specific type of window retrofit situation. The backing rod is to prevent the the foam from completely filling the space because the air gap acts as a cavity to allow drying and stop moisture movement if it finds its way in. There's improvements being made within the NZ industry on how windows are installed, sealed and insulated, but that's mostly for new build design, or major remodels that incorporate large areas of wall space being removed and rebuilt.

    When PVC windows were being rolled out i worked fitting doors and windows the guy i worked with was a damn nightmare. His favourite tool was his foam gun. No IQ when it came to measurements or cutting. Couldnt even cut arc without messing up. This video made me remember a bit of my past id forgotten. On one job we did a back door and needed to go into the house via the garage. My boss walked into the garage door and broke his nose. Some funny stories doing fitting. Someone from our company at Anglian windows and doors, fitted windows on the wrong house once 😂

    • @chrisdonnellybuilder
      @chrisdonnellybuilder 2 месяца назад

      I think it's the 1 hour, it's less transparent than the 4 hour. As an item yeah it's an expensive product, but cost benefit is subjective to the alternatives and the time it takes etc, and how the glue performs. where it was practical I would fill out the space with timber. This clip is from a whole sequence of videos that I'm yet to edit that show a few different scenarios The Repair Care goes a long way, it lasts me a few jobs

    Please, please, leave the vents and wall openings open. Although your solution will reduce most moisture from entering, it will not prevent everything. If your wall is properly built, you have a large enough wall cavity in which the water can naturally evaporate and be ventilated out.

    • @chrisdonnellybuilder
      @chrisdonnellybuilder 3 месяца назад

      It's a solid masonry wall, there's no cavity or openings that function to ventilate. If it was a veneer then yes, there would be a cavity behind it with drainage and vent openings. Different building components are designed to deal with moisture differently. If there was a window in this wall then there would be flashings, airseals, drip edges and drainage grooves that work together to deflect drain and ventilate. The way I have taken care of this wall isn't a one and done solution for every wall, but that's not what the video is about. It's about know how air moves moisture into a building

    Nice job. I have a question: erring strips simply be glued to block wall. Where do I have to use concrete fasteners too?

    • @chrisdonnellybuilder
      @chrisdonnellybuilder 4 месяца назад

      The concrete wall has a two coat water proof membrane painted on to it so I could only use adhesive. Otherwise some mechanical fixings would be good, but that's only to counter the movement in the timber, the strips are so thin that they won't warp enough to be an issue

    Just spit ballin', but.... I have a base demnsion ratio of 6x8 for a fire place. I want to "step-it-up" just as shown in the video... if i have a rectangle demension, How much extra length do I need when tracing a rectangle sheet, and how would I apply this formula to fold up all four corners a step, but keep the base perimeter demension true to that 6x8 ratio? I'll keep crunching my brain, but some pointers or even links to videos further demonstrating how to do that would be appreciated.

    • @chrisdonnellybuilder
      @chrisdonnellybuilder Год назад

      It's the colour someone chose to visually identify the level of treatment applied to the timber and therefore it's allowed usage in construction, in this case pink is h1.2 and suitable for enclosed structural framing.
