Side Projects: The Theremin w/Nick Kizirnis & Pamelia Stickney
This is such a cool episode. We’re talking all things theremin with Nick Kizirnis and Pamelia Stickney. This episode has been a long time in the making and well worth the wait. There’s some theremin history and some rumors about the inventor. Nick and Pam discuss how the instrument works and what weird things affect the sound and performance. I learn how to tune a theremin, what a thereminist’s worst nightmare is and if anyone has ever done a theremin version of dueling banjos.
Nick has a new album out called Every Moment. Grab it wherever you buy music nowadays. Check out his website, nickkizirnis.com or @nickkizirnis on instagram for more news. Check out Pamelia’s music and all of her b...

Pangaea's Corey Schenck Talks About Late Starts, Prog Rock In Tulsa, Reunions, & Beowulf
Просмотров 914 дней назад
Today’s guest is literally progressive. Let’s welcome Corey Schenck of the band Pangaea to the podcast. Corey was a late-bloomer, musically speaking. He didn’t pick up an instrument until late into high school. But it was such a deep connection that he went to college and received several degrees in it. He talks about how his love of music pushed him through the more challenging college courses...
Sheila Shukla From Magnolia Street String Band Talks About The New Album, Bluegrass, & Kids' Music
Просмотров 1521 день назад
Today’s guest really brings back some memories. Please welcome Sheila Shukla from Magnolia Street String Band. Sheila and I go way back. Like WAAAAAY back, all the way to elementary school. There’s a little bit of catching up in this episode, sprinkled throughout Sheila’s story. She talks about how she used to force her sister, Rita, to help her figure out harmonies she was hearing before they ...
Robyn Hitchcock On His Memoir, Brian Eno, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, & Why He Never Left 1967
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Месяц назад
Today’s guest exemplifies perseverance; and not just with his music but with this podcast. There were a few technical issues which have, hopefully, been overcome with clever editing. Welcome the one and only Robyn Hitchcock. He’s written a memoir about his life in 1967. In fact, it’s called 1967, How I Got There And Why I Never Left. It’s a very unique take on a memoir that works so well. But b...
T Bear Talks About New Album, KISS, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, Leaving Music, & What Brought Him Back
Просмотров 39Месяц назад
Today’s guest has been through it. But he hasn’t let it stop him.Welcome T Bear to the show. Born Richard Gerstein, he grew up spending time in both New York City and the Caribbean. He was playing pretty early on. In fact, he was invited to his first studio session at the age of just 17…by Richie Havens! Soon after, he was discovered by the KISS camp and began writing with the band. That helped...
Side Projects: Song Structure w/Steve Dawson & Mark Mallman

This episode of Side Projects sees the return of Steve Dawson and Mark Mallman. They join me to discuss song structure. We go over some basic terms and structures that are typical and atypical. We talk about songs like The Wreck Of The Edmunds Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot, Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey, Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin, and others. Is a successful song necessarily a GOOD ...
Jake Zavracky & Elizabeth LeBaron are The Dream Eaters & We Talk About New Music, Humor, & More
Просмотров 69Месяц назад
Today’s guests made me laugh. A lot. I’d like to welcome Jack Zavracky and Elizabeth LeBaron to the show. Together they make up The Dream Eaters. And this entire episode could have gone off the rails at any moment. From the very beginning things were different than just about any other show. For example, doing the actual podcast took Elizabeth by surprise. And once we got everything going, Jake...

Side Projects: Band Of Susans With Robert Poss And Karen Haglof

The Side Projects series of this podcast gives me a lot of latitude regarding subject matter. Occasionally, I like to go down a rabbit hole on a specific band. In fact they were very early episodes and we wer...

Today’s guest reminds me that there is some amazing talent out there that needs to be heard. Welcome Jackie Popovec from Youngstown, Ohio’s own The Vindys. Lex Borrero Talks About His Rise From Being Homeless In NYC To His Successes In Music & TV & More
Просмотров 352 месяца назад
Today’s guest makes me feel inspired. I welcome Lex Borrero to the program. He’s the very definition of rags-to-riches. Born in Bogota, Colombia, he emigrated with his mother to the US to start a new life from scratch. His first taste of success came after selling candy and burned CD’s to buy a pair of Jordans when he was a kid. But Lex wasn’t (and he’ll admit, still isn’t) a musician. Instead,...

Today’s guest embodies retro in the most fun ways possible. Welcome Chelsea Nenni of Late Slip to the show. She grew up with music all around. Her dad worked in rock radio since the 70’s. Today’s guest makes me feel exotic. Welcome David Nagler to the show. David grew up in a very musical house. In fact, his first performance was at age 1 or 2 in a stage production of The King And I. I met Robyn in the early / mid '90s in Virginia in America. I worked at the same company as his then girlfriend / mate / partner. He and I played together at that company's annual picnic. He even came by my house beforehand where we had a "rehearsal" for the picnic "gig" along with my band. It was loads of fun. He played my Tele and we did an all electric set. We played a handful of R&R songs from the '60s along with some other musicians who worked at that same company. I've always remembered that jam. I'd actually never heard of Robyn Hitchcock then, and I think that may be why we got along and had fun playing music for an afternoon - no expectations and it was all just good fun. And I think we sounded pretty good for only one rehearsal! (Robyn may not remember any of this - none of us are getting any younger, are we?). Everyone was quite impressed because he was an actual recording artist! Hope you've been well, Robyn. Cheers!

Great interview, Michael thanks for sharing. Yeah prince really exposed the record industry for sure. After his 3rd album, he started recording in his home, 81' and then a warehouse. He didn't need Warner as much anymore. But they kept the 90/10 % anyway. We can see how unfair it was. Understandable how it would make him mad. Just think how much money Warner made off of prince in 2 decades, it's a disgrace to think about. But that's how the game was always played, people in suits not playing any music. And I read that Warner didn't want to back the film purple rain. Prince had to put some of his own money towards it. Warner was glad that film was made, and grossed more than it took to make. Prince was a smart man with a 12th grade education. Genius. Michael I still want to know who came up with drum into to Shhh? I love it.

For the last week, I can't get Tele Novella songs out of my head. They are a soundtrack that follows me around throughout the day...I mean, in my head. First Eggs in One Basket, then Funeral, then Broomhorse, then some kind of rotation that I have no control over. It's like Natalie understands things about melodies that the rest of the world isn't aware of, and when there is a melody surprise, it's just so beautiful. I don't think it matters whether it's Western or whatever, I would listen to anything she writes. I never thought I would love the sound of a yodeling voice. I DO! Very happy with this interview. Amazing questions. I have only one. I wonder, in the context of the song, what, exactly is a Broomhorse?

I’m still shattered at the loss of Jimmy. It is so very scary to believe that someone so beloved, famous, iconic guitarist can end up alone, sleeping under cardboard for his shelter. I had lost touch with Jimmy months prior when he stopped answering my calls, missing rehearsals, just basically disappearing. Being an addict is a very private affair. I know, I am a heroin addict also, shooting dope is not a social event. It’s a private, lonely, sad , desperate place. I’m angry because I didn’t pick up on the clues that most addicts exhibit. Selfishly, we had formed the greatest instrumental, western flavored band with a bright future, I’ve ever had the privilege to be a part of. RIP Jimmy, You were the “ King of Slow”
