पावशा : या पक्ष्याच्या क्युक्युलिडी या पक्षिकुलात समावेश केला असून याचे शास्त्रीय नाव क्युक्युलस व्हेरिअस आहे. भारतात ब्रिटिश राजवटीत राहणाऱ्या इंग्रजांनी या पक्ष्याला ‘ब्रेनफीव्हर बर्ड’ हे नाव दिले आणि ते रूढ झाले. उत्तर भारतात याला ‘पपीहा’ म्हणतात. हा पक्षी भारत आणि श्रीलंकेमध्ये आढळतो. भारतात हिमालयाच्या ७६० मी. उंचीपासून खाली दक्षिणेकडे तो सर्वत्र सापडतो. हा वृक्षवासी पक्षी असून जंगलात राहतो. मनुष्यवस्तीजवळ असणाऱ्या बागा, दाट झाडी, आंबराई इ. ठिकाणे त्याला जास्त पसंत पडतात. हे एकेकटेच असतात. हा ⇨ कबुतराएवढा पण त्याच्यापेक्षा सडपातळ आणि जास्त लांब शेपटी असणारा पक्षी आहे. लांबी सु. ३३ सेंमी. शरीराची वरची बाजू राखी करड्या रंगाची आणि खालची पांढरट असून तिच्यावर आडवे तपकिरी पट्टे शेपटी करड्या रंगाची असून तिच्यावर रुंद तांबूस पट्टे डोळे आणि पाय पिवळ्या रंगाचे चोच हिरवट रंगाची दिसायला हा ⇨ शिकऱ्यासारखा असतो. नर आणि मादी यांच्या रूपात फरक नसतो. वसंत ऋतूच्या सुरुवातीपासून जवळजवळ सगळ्या पावसाळाभर याचे ओरडणे ऐकू येते. हिवाळ्यात ⇨ कोकिळेप्रमाणेच तो स्तब्ध असतो. याचे ओरडणे कसे असते याविषयी निरनिराळ्या लोकांनी निरनिराळ्या कल्पना केलेल्या आहेत. उत्तर भारतीय लोकांना तो ‘पी-पीहा’ किंवा ‘पी कहाँ’ असा आवाज काढतो असे वाटते, तर महाराष्ट्रीयांना तयाचे सूर ‘पेssरते व्हा’ किंवा ‘पाsऊस आला’ असे आहेत, असे वाटते. रात्रंदिवस याचे ओरडणे ऐकू येते. मधून मधून थोडा वेळ थांबत हा तासन्तास ओरडत असतो. वड, पिंपळ व इतर झाडांची फळे आणि किडे खाऊन हा राहतो. केसाळ सुरवंट तो आवडीने खातो. याची वीण मार्चपासून जूनपर्यंत होते. मादी आपली अंडी निरनिराळ्या जातींच्या बैराग्यांच्या (सातभाईंच्या) घरट्यात घालते. पावशा (क्युक्युलस व्हेरिअस) पावशा (क्युक्युलस व्हेरिअस) बहुधा एका घरट्यात ती एकच अंडे घालते. अंडे सातभाईच्या अंड्यासारखेच निळे असते. ते फुटून पावशाचे पिल्लू बाहेर पडले म्हणजे ते सातभाईच्या पिल्लांना घरट्याबाहेर ढकलून देते. सातभाई नर-मादी या पिल्लाचे लालन-पालन करतात.
