This is my favorite of the countless Mahler 1 performances I've heard in over 50 years of enjoying this symphony. Tennstedt's superb interpretation, articulated by the great musicians of the CSO, brings the Mahler masterpiece beautifully to life.

At times he actually seems moved to tears by the beauty of this string sound. This is becoming the Mahler 1 I come back to! (A somewhat uncultured opinion.) PS when the Eb clarinet plays the sarcastic little counter melody, it knocks me out!

Tennstedt was all about the music and how to communicate with the orchestra. He was never "flashy" or self important. As in this performance. A guest conductor who could achieve a performance the equal of most music directors with their own orchestras. Audiences loved him.

What a great performance and interpretation. The great CSO brass really shined. Bud Herseth was 1st chair trumpet for decades for the CSO. One of the best orchestral trumpet musicians of all time. A true master. The great CSO brass tradition continues today. If you are in Chicago go to the Symphony Center and experience this orchestra live. Sometimes the brass pierces through the orchestra from te back row like a laser right through you. Nothing like a great live performance.
