Hi. It's really called an F/a (omit 5) where the C has been omitted. It works well in most cases but sometimes you miss the fifth. I call it "the beginners F".

@@chuckguy3057 Hi, yes. It's a common trick to play three string chords on the Mandolin to get things going. Try searching for "three string chords for Mandolin".
