After the war, it was found and acknowledged that the Emperor did not authorize going to war. He had been committed to peace since the beginning. The real instigators of the conflict was Tojo and the Army hotheads who tried to take control entirely; even to the point of attempting a coup against the Emperor himself. McArthur exonerated him of all charges and even agreed to make him instrumental to the rebuilding of the japanese culture and their lives. Historians still debate on the ramifications if the Declaration of War by japan had been on time and the sneak attack hadn't happened at all. Would the US had as much resolve to end the war, or would it have been more lacksidasical in nature? It just goes to prove that, according to Murphy's Law of Warfare, "No plan survives first contact with the enemy." Just as with Rommel of germany, Yamamoto was a true hero of the people and his country and nothing should be allowed to change it.

The real Yamamoto died an honorable death, as well. He was thrown clear from the wreckage, still in his seat, still gripping his katana. He had taken two 50 cal rounds, one through his left shoulder and one through the left lower jaw that exited above his right eye. Both were fatal wounds, and Yamamoto would have been dead long before his aircraft crashed. An honorable enemy and an honorable death. Rest in peace, Isoroku Yamamoto.

That wasn't as it happened. There was 2 Betty's, but there was only a few fighters. Both Betty's were shot down along with a couple of the escorts. The other part of it is that the escorts didn't see the Lightnings until they went past them. When the ones went after the bombers, the fighters got attacked by the other Lightnings. The Lightnings had their plan. Some would tangle with the escorts while others went after the bombers. The thing about Yamamoto was that he opposed the war with the US. The emperor opposed the war as well. It was the expansionist Army that wanted the war. The Army knew they couldn't survive if they didn't get the materials they needed. They also knew they couldn't attack someone without getting involved with America. Yamamoto could only guarantee Japan would have 6 months before America would mobilize and fight back. Due to the losses at Midway and Guadalcanal, Yamamoto was on his way down. Being shot down saved him that fate.

Decent enough re-creation of the event, but at 04:40 the Zeros flying top cover would have been behind and MUCH higher than the bombers. And the Zero pilot seeing the Lightnings would have been looking forward and down... and the approaching Lightnings-- as they attacked-- would have been underneath and rising up on their attack run.

Richard Bong, not Bang. He was not that mission. The pilot that was initally credited with shooting down Yamamoto's plane was Captain Thomas Lanphier. Then partial credit was given to Lanphier and Lieutenant Rex Barber. Later historians have given sole credit to Barber, though.
