I don't think he's doing anything fundamentally different from the "mythos" creation you touch on at the start that we normally see in celebrity photography. He's just putting them in these every day settings to increase the contrast of how exceptional these people are meant to be seen as. It's like they are aliens you bumped into in the parking lot and snapped a photo of for the Fortean Times.

When it comes to the newer, "controversial" work of Teller shown in this video, I think of a single phrase: "Ironic shitposting is still shitposting." Congratulations, Teller. You made a bad photo. No matter what intentions are behind it, the bad photo is still bad.

I won’t lie. There’s something that I really love about these photos. The fact that they really look like any amateur took them. They feel like a behind the scenes photo somebody got on their phone before the real photo was taken. I love how awkward every element is. I think what I like about them is that they make it so easy for you to picture yourself being there at the shoot or walking past on the street. Celebrities, like you said, are so often untouchable and live in a totally different reality from us. These photos humanise them but not in a hashtagrelatable way. They highlight the absurdity of their poses and how much their fashion stands out in the real world. And the fact that I have no idea if this is intentional is really funny to me. They’re certainly compelling in their own way. Whether that’s the way Mr Teller wants us to feel or not DOESNT really matter to me

Teaching art, he may be at the point where grime and "art" feel contrived and his point in this series is to recreate the uncanny valley you referred to. Like taking fashion's normcore, dad style, or irony and applying it to photography.

1:32 The sunlight. The perfectly conditioned midnight locks of hair. The gorgeous gapped grimace. The purr of the mighty puma/mountain/nittany lion enraged by its foe. The whole is truly mightier than the sum of its parts.

Like many I just can't wrap my head around how an artist can create such a dislike in his images. Although, I feel he intentionally goes against the grain to create the controversy that is now taking place and has been part of his style. The old saying "any news is good news" applies here. As long as his name is out there good or bad he'll continue to work and the media will continue to report on it.

The dude has done it all. Many of his images I remember in the 90s. Iconic stuff that shaped fashion and music photography. The old fart is at it again, this time pissing off the Instagram portraiture kids who have adopted the bokeh and retouching aesthetic. Love it or hate it...I'm laughing to see the old guy is still an original. What a Boss!
