This is extremely helpful. My mother’s funeral service is next week and I have extreme anxiety at the thought of my aunt and cousins being there. While my mom was on her last days in the hospital they criticized my siblings and I, and angrily lashed out at us in the hospital waiting room. My Aunt and cousin almost physically attacked me. We invited them to service out of respect for our mother, but they make me feel extremely uncomfortable.

She was 20 and my cousin. I don’t know if I can go. I took in the emotions part in and I think it’s best I stay away. She was having a tough time before she went and I felt I couldn’t help her so I coped by growing very distant from her. We were raised as sisters but I feel that I was not important enough in her last years to feel how I feel and have the reaction I know I’ll have when I see her body. Is there any way to respectfully not go? Ik if I say it’s too much it’ll feel shallow.

Am I supposed to offer to go to a funeral with my boyfriend? It's for his grandmother. I have a hard time looking at dead people and don't want to make people feel worse that are grieving.

Thanks for this. It is unbelievable how many people have no idea how to act and what to wear etc. Very good points to consider. With flowers, some people are allergic and can't have flowers around at all. My dad lived through the depression and food was a concern throughout his life. When he passed my cousin's sent a memorial donation in his honor. We didn't have any services because of covid and had not made any mention of memorials. I gave the donation to the food pantry in our home town. I found out that they could buy food cheaper than i could so the cash went further that way. I just found out that one of the high school classes made a donation to the home town library in his honor too. I was so pleased as my dad loved to read.

All the girls and women in my family wore a cap and fishnet veil, while the men had their faces completely covered by a black bodysuit, which looks like Slenderman’s black face. And everybody had their eyes closed the whole time.

We requested people wear purple for my sister’s memorial also! It was her favorite color. 💜

As always, spot on...I will admit I have missed two celebration of life gatherings since the death of my daughter because I simply can not cope. Maybe that will change one day...and maybe it won't. Either way, it is my grief and my choice. Thank you for always empowering us!!
