Avon Valley 27 Oct 2024
Back in Avon Valley this weekend with Tom my 450MT, fairly eventless time of it, just taking a bit of a chilled back ride this time, did a couple of small technical bits which I was previously scared of, so that was good.

Really enjoying taking Tom (the cfmoto 450MT) out and about and increasing my skill set. This week was better than last and started implementing a lot more learning s from last time. Don't get me wrong, still got HEAPS to learn. Love the 450MT, I drop it more than most, but boy it just keeps plugging along.

The day started pretty easy going but then got more and more challenging, this bike is so good, me on the other hand, i got lots more to learn, but did boost my confidence in various stages. Great day to really push myself. Big thanks to Shuan, for helping me through. Sound credit: bbc sound effects

Out and about in Perth Western Australia. The move has happened, the ninja has moved on, fun as it was, I am enjoying more offroading (although such a noob to it all). Loving it so far, the obvious suspension clearance and travel is noticed big time, gonna real enjoy it and more than powerful enough for me. :-) We did take a nap today, but first time over a log and sort of stuffed up the rear e...

I just traded in my old ER-6n on a deposit towards a Ibex 450, funny how we basically made the same change. Should be hitting us here in the states in a month or two.
Did you head in to the Avon Valley NP from Chittering Rd on Sunday morning? I was following a 450mt with crash bars from the Great Northern Highway to Plunkett road :) Nice vid. Id not have handled the sand any better than you!
Hi, yep that was likely me, nice day out there to
Love the area. I would love to go ride with you as i own a 450mt and a 390 adventure maybe develop some skills together
Good onya mate 👍🏼
cheers, still learning for an old man at 56 just really starting on dirt
@@oldfartfun we all tend to forget how long it takes. @LaviandOllie have travelled around the world on a motorcycle. (RUclips) Lavi just completed her motorcycle license and has just conquered the TET in England. (Trans Euro Trail) Worth a watch.
When u are going down hill don’t grab de cluch, let de bike run with the first gear, so it dosen’t grab to much speed! Keep it up!!!💪🏻
yes yes, more recently I found the benefit and joy of engine braking 🙂
Oh that empty feeling when you drop in to a hole and you go to put your foot down...and nothin'. 🤨😊
😂 yep
Getting Better mate.
Cheers mate
Great effort mate, just need more gas and better tyres.
yeah man, slowly getting better at it
You're going to burn that clutch out riding like a pansy. Speed & Power man! It's a dirt bike crossover
ha ha, yep, ya not wrong
Man the sands a bitch until you get confident. Good to see us mere mortals learning, it’s bloody tough out there, so much more technical than the road. Serious challenge, but so much fun when you get better. It’s one of the most difficult things I’ve ever learned in my life, while you bash up your pride and joy. Frigging dangerous to. Practice practice and more practice with shit loads of patience. Have fun be safe 😊
it is a great challenge and slowly getting better, but i am only getting out one day a week, the mighty MT takes a beating from me but always works and keeps going, loving the challenge and something different, Yes, patience is key to keep at it and build the skills :-) also not a very heavy bike, i find it easy to pick up as i do take a few naps 🤣
One thing about Mt450 she likes to move, so give it some, and the stock tyres are really no good for that kind of sand, goodluck, absolutely love the Cfmoto mt450, she's just got it all. 🤘
Yeah true, last weekend was more skills building and getting use to higher speed through sand etc, it is a great fun bike certainly takes a beating from me and always keeps going
Hi mate, what tyres do you suggest, am looking at buying one very soon. Tyres are tubeless and am reading various things regarding that. All in all you are impressed with yours?
How bout some 3M ‘Auto’ heavy duty double-sided tape to augment the screws of your GPS mount? That should keep it place with just a small piece at every corner of the plate.
hi, yeah i ended up making a 4mm alloy plate to mount it to the dash bolts and then mount my garmin straight above, works out better for me and less overall bulk
Great to see some local trails...I've traversed thee hills for years on my KLR. I test road one of these 450MT in Midland a few weeks ago. Great bike good quality, thinking of buying one. See you out there! Cheers, Marc
That sand was so bloody soft
yeah, currently have a love hate relationship with it :-)
What tires are you running? I have mitas xt trail…would be very good there.
Oh yeah still running stock, just waiting for them wear out
Selling my Africa twin to buy one of these 450mt. Great bikes.
I am loving this bike so universal
Good on you for having the guts to go out onto those trails but get some more road miles under your belt so you know the bike and it's operation inside out. Practice steering the bike with your weight on the pegs, shifting your weight forward and back in the seat and again standing too. Counter steering can help change the bikes direction with less weight transfer if you get caught out and are stuck in the seat if standing would have helped and all manor of other situations as well so practice that so it becomes second nature. Well done again for having a go. Stay safe.
yep, you are spot on, these are things i have started to do and this weekend will be more skills building, step by step weekend by weekend. Cheers
Good for you mate! The most important thing about any riding is to have fun! Too many people forget that unfortunately. What tyre pressures are you running?
Mate, I am having so much fun on this bike, also, turned out i was running street pressure, so, we are slowly learning, all part of the challenge :-)
@@oldfartfun There you go! Personally I run 20psi rear and 18psi front on my Husky 701 which works beautifully for all conditions. You’re going to hear plenty of conflicting, confusing information about tyre pressures but just like everything keep it simple and enjoy!
@@grantschelfhout1227 cheers, yeah its all about experimenting for what's right for me
Yamaha TW200 for the win!
Nice Video, looks like some great tracks. I'm also in Perth and just bought my first ADV bike this year!
Oh man I am loving the move to an adv from a street bike
@@oldfartfun oh yeah, almost 15 years of street for me before making the switch.
Looks like fun. Keep pushing yourself, im pushing myself out my comfort zone on my klr650 and finding out that i can do the things id usually just bypass and not try. Great work.
Yeah I am loving moving to offroading more and the challenges are great
How would you compare it to the bush pig dr 650?
oh gosh I would not know, i came from a ninja650 to this, first time with any form of offroad capable bike
Nice day for it.
great days at the moment during spring
T7 Lite? Mini T7? T7 jr? Or just Mr. 450 MT?
He he just the mighty 450MT, cracker value for money
@@oldfartfun No doubt.
Those were some great trails. I see you often end up picking the route that is gnarly and has high chances of falling over and should've followed your mate
yeah, as its all still new to me it is sometimes hard to pick a line and yes i should just follow mymate 🤣
@@oldfartfun As they say, low speed is your enemy
Low speed isn’t your enemy. Inability to manipulate controls and balance at low speed is. The best off-road riders spend plenty of time practicing very slow speed and even static drills to refine control of throttle , clutch and brake and balance. People confuse maintenance of appropriate momentum with speed. I know guys that rant about riding for decades and they are one trick ponies - fucking hold and and send it. They can’t actually ride well at all in even moderately technical terrain that forces slower speeds or should be done at slower speeds to prevent damage to bikes or injury.
@@titaniumquarrion9838 oh heck yes, my next time out is to work on this for sure.
Riding down steep slopes with the clutch in , no engine braking! Really? Sorry mate , good video but that’s a novice no no but I do see some still doing this and wondering why they’re out of control
oh. yes part of the learning i noticed that and these are the things to work on.
Knowing when to engage the clutch and when to use engine braking is all part of the learning curve but generally speaking, always use the engine to help braking when going down steep hills.
Cut the dude a bit a slack mate, he said in the title he was out of his comfort zone. Its all part of the learning curve and comes with time on the bike challenging yourself like this. Standing up is also a gazillion times easier, but a confidence barrier that needs to be breached as the skills develop. It will come with time. Enjoyed the video, hope you are enjoying the bike.
@@markhills3922 yes, much improved this last weekend, standing and engine braking, big winner
@@Vlerkies yeah learning heaps and the feedback has been helpful as this last weekend we got to standing up more and using the engine alot more, the result was for a far more enjoyable ride
Great trails you were riding. I couldn't see your screen too clearly, but it appears to me you were not in off-road mode. You really need TC off otherwise as soon as that rear wheel loses traction, the system will cut power to the back wheel and that's not what you want in low traction off-road conditions, particularly in the gnarly stuff. I see you picked up on this in post edit - too late by then, lesson learnt I suppose.
yes, i think i was too focused on other things I kept forgetting to turn it off, as you say, all a learning process
Where is this ride at

Where was that concrete structure in the creek other than Western Australia, interested what it was originally built for. Looked like a good day out, people that don't ride offroad don't see how physical it can be. Bet you slept well that night.
It's a "v notch" used to measure water flow
Yep, confidence ... and a better set of tires. You'd be amazed at how much a good set of tires at the right pressure will help you with your confidence. As a dirt rider those trails don't look too difficult in those conditions. But then I spotted the tires you are on and that would've changed the game significantly.
hi ya, oh yes i do agree, just gonna wear out the stock tyres first then the question of tyres will be interesting given i am probably 50/50 mix
@oldfartfun ... yeah tires are very much a personal choice that depends on your riding style, location and weather. My advice would be to go one step more toward the off road side than you think. This will allow for wet conditions where dirt gets 10x more slippery (or in the case of clay about a million times :) )Just be aware that the more you go to the off road side the faster they will wear on the road.
You guys in Oz have such great riding areas. It's like the west side of the States, we've got a ton of public land to use, especially if you have a license plate. I feel bad for those guys in the UK or east coast guys in the States.
I am thinking of getting one of these to get familiar with offroad riding... Is this a good starting bike?
@MartinBlass ... for the price point, absolutely. It is light (ish), not overly powerful, lacks any complicated electronics that would be wasted on a beginner. And it's cheaper than most other ADV bikes. As a dirt bike it isn't great but as an ADV? Yep
value for money, takes a beating and damn nice to ride, i dont think you can beat the value, all does depend on your goals though as well, i use mine for a good mix of standard tarmac, gravel and then these types of tracks, it is a good all rounder and i am not a horsepower seeker and do not mind it does not have fancy electronics
It really depends on if you want to have the easiest possible learning experience off road or if you want the ability to go on long trips. If you want to stay close to home and ride off road for a few hours you can just get a road legal dirtbike/enduro like the drz400. If you want to go camping then an 450mt bike is going carry more stuff and leave you with more energy when you arrive at the destination.
It's 430+lbs. Not a very beginner friendly weight for starting offroad work. Maybe a 300L, 390 adventure, drz400 or even a dr650 would be less weight.
@kugangles9860 ... yeah it's not the lightest bike. Having said that it has a low center of gravity ... so even though all those bikes you mention are lighter it is less important due to this. I agree that the CRF300L especially would probably be a better learner bike though.
Take er out of the comfort zone! When I get too comfortable, that's when shit goes wrong.
They were some very ordinary trails to start with. You and the bike did quite well. They seen a pretty handy adventure bike for general trails and riding.
Just gotta send it sometimes
its all part of the fun :-)
Hi Christopher, are all you forest rides with in 100km from Perth CBD? I am moving to Perth in the next few months and starting make a list of places to go offroad. Thanks for the content.
hi ya, i live around the airport so, yes, lots of areas in that ball park, I spent 5 hours last sunday and only did 260kms all up and had a great time in the dirt (video coming out o that shortly),
Nothing better then just going for a ride. No destination, just ride stop eat drink look around. Ride home completely relaxed
I ride in this area offten im looking at buying a cf moto do you fined the tiyers it comes with are shit and do you think it is a heavy bike?
I have to preface this with saying I am still very much a newbie to off roading, first off the bike is light, I find it really easy to pick up even with crash bars on it, so no issues there. re the tyres, the mate I was riding with had stock tyres as well but as he is more experienced he did way better than me, so I am not the best person to ask about tyres, until I try a different type, or gain more experience. hope this helps in any way.
Thank you mate I live in perth I only have a little crf 230 dosen't go any mour than 100ks 😂 but unstoppable need something with a bit more high way speed. if you are interested on going on a ride know a few good loops
