Maiden in the Forest is a small, but very thinky solo card game designed by Todd Sanders. It's super fun, but I lost. And I made some mistakes. Card Capture Tutorial and Playthrough
Просмотров 2 тыс.5 лет назад
Card Capture is a deckbuilder card game, using nothing but a standard deck of 54 playing cards. It's a gateway-complexity game, but introduces many common aspects of hobby-style deckbuilding games. You start the game with nothing but the 12 smallest cards in the deck, plus the two jokers, and use them together to capture the larger cards in the deck. BoardGameGeek has an entry for this game at:...
I have to get circle of wagons now, thanks
@@toddbartel6300 it's a great game! I think it's back on Kickstarter right now, with a second wallet full of cards.
I have a football card game called Let's Play Football. That's a good pub game
With the release of Button Shy's Mysticana Foundation Deck, I've been trying a variant of this game for that deck. It's been fun, but underbaked as I am not a game designer. Any chance you'd do a Mysticana expansion based on this deck-building design? I loved Space Shipped, by the way!
@@QuendraIC I haven't worked on any Mysticana games personally, but I would presume someone has already built one based on deck building. I think they've got more than a dozen expansions to that already planned, with more to come!
If I had to keep only 3 games, then they would be: (excluding 2 decks of playing cards ofc) 3- Throw Throw Burrito 2- Mysterium 1- Love Letter Honorable mentions: Take 5/ Take a Number (it also at made it on the list, but ppl seems to dislike it for its simplicity, if only they actually played it)
@@alixx_legenddark_xx2819 Thanks for sharing your list! Our local Public Library has a giant sized Throw Throw Burrito and it looked like a lot of fun! I've never played your honorable mention game, but sometimes, simple games are perfect for the situation!
@@LucasGentry it is very fun, but it’s very tiring.
46:30 Not necessarily a mistake but seemingly ambiguous. "You help a stranded droid. Receive the last resource in the resource row." I interpreted "last" as the one farthest away from "next." Perhaps it would have been better to say "right most" or "left most"?
@@MrMaelstrom07 yes, you're exactly right! Sorry for the confusion. Last is the rightmost resource. This video was made from the first printing. Later printings were changed to say rightmost instead.
49:30 I'm not sure about that. By the wording, you either pay 2M or take two damage. Doesn't say pay 2M or take 1pt of damage for each M you can't pay. Basically, Grosksh Lord says pay up. If you can't, he's gonna shoot lasers at your ship. Lasers hit you for 2. Not like he's gonna hit with ½ power.
You're exactly right! I messed that up. Thanks!
Hm you could have bought the crystal at 43:00...?
It wouldn't surprise me at all! Several people have pointed out mistakes in this playthrough, so hopefully, it still works well enough to understand how to play! Thanks for reaching out

I just used paint dot net (getpaint.net). There are many more powerful paint programs, but this is the easiest to use free one that I've seen.
Thanks❤
Still playing this game in 2024
Roughly pocket sized = purse games
You're not bad at it, just really unlucky with the abbots! I only just bought the game and very excited now to have a chance to play solo too
It's such a good game!
Love the video, Do you got post a fantasyform video too? Really looking for it!
My computer that I used for video recording is busted, so I likely won't be able to make one in time, but there's a very small possibility I might be able to put one together before the Kickstarter.
@@LucasGentry Love SpaceShipped over years. Just one problem the green section white text hard to read. Sp happy see your new game FantasyForm color and text looks better and clear now. Got back it!
I watch these to judge people. You have good taste, sir. Good video.
Ha! Thank you for the compliment! If I was to remake this video today, I might have a few different games on the list, (Revolver Noir published by Button Shy would certainly be added, probably knocking Mr Jack Pocket off the list), but I still enjoy all of the games in this video :-) Since you think I have good taste, I'd love to hear what other games you would recommend for people that like my kinds of games!
Draw?
Yes. A draw (also called a tie) means that we both won or both lost at the same time (in other contexts, it could mean we both had the same score, if it was a scoring game)
Great Video
Thanks! What games would you keep if you could only keep one?
@@LucasGentry Oh, thats hard. I think i would choose sleeping gods.
This is a great intro to deckbuilding games. I wonder though, is there a way to make a 2+ player version? I would like to teach my dad to play this and play together if possible.
I'm sure it's possible to make a similar game into a two player game, but all the times I've tried to make it work just don't work in 54 cards. If you design it, though, I'd love to know about it
@LucasGentry I was considering it being a two deck game. Where each player gets the full 2-4 starting draw deck. The rest of the cards are shuffled into one big enemy deck. Maybe instead of the enemy capturing your cards the opposing player captures your cards. And then instead of the royals being discarded permanently losing you the game. Whichever player at the end that has more royals wins. Just a thrown together idea. May expand on it more.
How did you print these cards?
Funny you should ask :-) I made a video where I made a copy of the game using cereal box for cardstock ( ruclips.net/video/pFdSGJJei0Y/видео.html )
I have played this game so many times, and I must suck so bad - I have yet to win! :)
I'm also super bad at it. I just can't keep track of all the things I need to! Still, it's lots of fun!
Just bought this from the UK hub and its a brilliant little game. Still watching video but hoping video explains some of the instructions. 'Shifting the cards' in the manual says I have to move resources into the upgrade row until it has 4 cards, but the very next is when it has more than 3 and set up asks for 3 cards. It also says you play the left most colony card, so you don't get to see the prices of the goods coming next but you seem to say you do. Oh wait... you traverse the 3 cards for each phase of a turn!? Oh wow. I was playing all phases from the left most card.
Did you end up figuring out how to play after all? Feel free to reach out on Board Game Geek or the Button Shy Discord if you have any questions. I would have included RUclips in the list, but apparently, it doesn't show me when people comment anymore. Very sorry for not responding quickly!
At 10:36 you say that your queen is still trapped but is she not able to slide out? The rules about sliding out of spots feels tricky to me. It’s easy to see if one is able to slide in but does that mean one can move out if it can physically slide out even if it has to rotate to one side?
I believe I just meant that I had to use my turn to get the other bug out of the way, so I couldn't move my queen. If it was my turn and the board was like that, I could have slid my queen out of danger (or at least into a position of slightly less danger). That being said, hex don't rotate to get them out, they just slide or jump.
Forgive me if this is a naive question, but at around 10:21 what is to stop white placing a piece in the only space by the black queen bee and therefore surrounding it and claiming a win?
When you bring a new bug onto the board, it can only be placed touching only other bugs of the same color as it is. Thanks for asking!
@@LucasGentry Lucas, of course, how remiss of me! Just learning the game and I forgot the first rule. Thank you so much for posting such an excellent and eloquently narrated video. Brilliant stuff!
If cards determine that other cards cannot be manipulated or only once, use x tokens to denote them.
Thanks for the video! Does it look like it was shot at 480p for everyone else? I've got set to 1080p but there's heavy artifacting and you can't even see the text on any of the cards - just blurry lines.
Sorry about that. It was one of my first videos I tried to record, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if I did it all wrong. Hopefully, it's still clear enough to let you see how the game works!
@@LucasGentry Oh yeah it's ok! It's still a useful video, I was just wondering if there was a problem on my end! Thanks :)
is there any chance this will pop-up as a complete package ( with all the expansions ) as a Print2Play deal ?
I don't recall seeing bundles on pnparcade, so probably not as a bundle, but they do have sales a couple times a year (one of which is Thanksgiving/Cyber Monday in late November) that often sells games and expansions for like $1 each.
@@LucasGentry when i was searching for the expansions - it took me to buttonshy site and there was no option for pnp .. so i automatically assumed : that's it... probbably not available as PNP anymore. Totally forgot about the PnPArcade :) will purchase probbably today. Thanks a milion for responding and the lovely game.
round 1 : microhole in the hull ... luckily i got nothing in my cargo . ( the floating merchant in space , you just took for a ride, thinks otherwise !!!! ) :D I love this game
Super cool. I like the idea, but wondering if it's too easy? This was only one play through and it could've been circumstantial, but seemed like there wasn't too much worry -especially from the middle point on. Wondering if you've developed this further since this video was posted? What a cool idea concept, thanks!
So... about that. A lot of people do seem to think it's too easy, while another subset of players think it's too hard. Lots of people have suggested specific modifications. I totally expect at some point someone will suggest a modification that will improve it quite a bit, but the ones that I've played often end up just making it more complex, without really making it "better", so I tend to just stick with the base game. I've also tried to design several modified versions (trying to add theme, special powers, a second player, etc. ) and so far, every one of my modified versions have the same issue -- adds complexity, but doesn't really make a better game. So, to answer your question, yes, I've attempted to develop it further quite a few times, but keep ending up liking the simplicity of the original more than any of the "developed" versions I've played. (Totally personal preference, though. You might like one of the modified versions other people have suggested. They're on Board Game Geek, if you'd like to check them out)
@@LucasGentry Thanks, I will take a look for curiousity at least. It is a great game, and no sense in making it more complex without improving the overall experience. I just added a game to BGG called "Haunted Solitaire." If you have a chance to check it out. Thanks again for sharing this awesome game!
I'm late to the party, but... Let's do my five (ten feels almost too generous). 1. Flash Point: Fire Rescue 2. Ticket to Ride 3. North Wind 4. San Juan 5. Concept Kids: Animals I was interested to find that my highest rated games don't make the cut. They are amazing in the right circumstances, but for this list I need games that are good to great in as many situations as possible.
That was what I decided as well! If I can only have a couple games, they've gotta be good at everything! Great list! Ticket to Ride is certainly an evergreen game. I've never played San Juan, but it always seems to be mentioned with Race for the Galaxy, and that's one of my all-time favorites!
I am keen on the game but having a solo mode is imperative for me... so thank you for this!
spaceshipped is a masterpiece 🥰🍾
Thanks! I appreciate it!
great game,thank you
Oh yeah! If you like trick taking games, this is one of the best! Thanks for the kind words :-)
Been having some fun with this, but one question: are you allowed to sacrifice if the enemy draw deck is empty?
Sure!
Great game thanks for sharing would this game still work including cards up to six in the starter deck?
What a gr8 video. Talking slow, like you did, was helpful & the slow game play, enabled me, to really get a feel for how the games played. Well done👍
How about a web version of this? An instalable version, so one can have an App like experience, would be sweet.
Sadly, I don't have the time to invest in learning how to make apps, but if you look for the game on boardgamegeek.com, there have been a couple people who have used Card Capture as coding projects and made digital versions of the game.
@@LucasGentry Thanks for the swift reply. I was thinking of making my own version, not asking you to do it. But i'll check those out! ;)
At the beginning part of the game, I feel that the enemy capturing your cards is actually beneficial to you, since you ruled the captures to target the weakest cards. It would be more challenging if the enemy captures the strongest cards in your hand instead, wouldn't it?
You're exactly right. Letting the enemy capture your weak cards is a way to cull your deck of weaker cards. That's as intended and one of the key aspects of deck building games. I think if they always took your best cards, it would be impossible to build up your engine, so I don't think it would be possible to win at all. (That being said, I'd love to be proved wrong, if you'd like to give it a try!)
Love this!! Very helpful thank you 😊 going to be taking this on a backpacking trip through chile
What a great video!! Just purchased Valley of the kings premium edition and this really showed how the game works. Thank you!
Wow, great job! You sold me on every game I didn't already have on this list... In Mr Jack Pocket I think you might be missing the rule that tiles get turned at the start so that none of the detectives get to see anyone. It's much more evenly matched that way... Other pocket-sized games I highly recommend are Omen: A Reign of War (old Small Box Games edition), Hanabi, and Iron Man 2: Game of War (or its ancestor, Star Wars: Clash of the Lightsabers).
I have Pocket Mars and The Manhattan Project: Chain Reaction. Both pocket size.
Nice. I've heard of them both, but haven't played either. Are they some of your favorite small box games?
@@LucasGentry they are some of my favorite small box/ pocket board and card games. I even have Pocket Sub and the sequel of Love Letter called Lost Legacy.
At 32:56, the marauder steals a crystal to be removed the game, then _the next resource in line is flipped into the colony row_. This particular event isn't in the rulebook, and I was confused about which resource to flip. Perhaps that should be obvious from Shift Cards section, rule 3, because after the crystal is stolen, there is still a rightmost resource to flip, but I'm kind of dumb.
thank you so much
hey, is your name actually "Lucas (first name) Gentry (last name)?". I am writing an essay in MLA format and i am using your video as a source. i hope you dont mind.
Yes, it is. And I don't mind at all!
You can never go negative points on a scoring card? Regarding Central Perks, you have +7 points and -8 points, which is equal to -1.
Subscribed right away! Very nice game presentation style 👍
I appreciate your posting your picks. I’ve purchased Friday, Hive, and Sprawlopolis after watching your video.
Those are all fantastic games! I still play and enjoy all of those, these years later :-)
There’s purple meeples?! Which edition are they in?
Sadly, there aren't any in the base game. I got them 3D printed at my local public library. (I have found places online that will sell a complete set of "purple Carcassonne wooden meeples", but as far as I know, they're not in any official versions)
If you just need the regular sized meeples or the big meeples from Inns and Cathedrals expansion, you can get them from The Game Crafter, but they don't have the whole set if you have other expansions.
Great to have the designer do a play through. This will be very helpful to get this little game to the table. Thank you kindly.
