Just one more thought, the only thing that would prevent the gambling aspect is regulation, and I think we’re seeing less regulation as a whole. Look at the explosion of online sports betting, and we even have vending machines that sell scratch lottery tickets with no age check. I doubt the gambling lobby would allow an introduction of any regulation that may also impact them.

My parents and in-laws never understood why I have so many boxes of unopened Pokémon cards and booster boxes sitting in my closets and why they are even they worth anything, then I showed them it’s really unregulated gambling disguised as a children’s game and you can hold and resell them back into the hobby later on when certain sets become scarce. I even showed them there are online “casinos” in the form of rip and shippers online, and we watched real time the crazy amounts of money people pour into it…. It was then that rip and ship culture really opened their eyes to it.

It is completely gambling. Random chance at getting something rare/valuable above what you spent. Chance at getting a "loser" which is not what you wanted and less valuable than what you spent. Same as loot boxes in video games, same as some Lego packs and other things that have a surprise element. I hate it for kids. Have hated it for kids since I first heard of the Pokemon booster packs.

I don't think governments should regulate it like casinos but I do think education should be taught around it like most things in life. The only reason ppl get worked up about Pokemon cards is because of the popularity and the older audience that it also appeals to. Nobody regulates kinder surprise toys or the dig out a shiny rock toys only because they aren't popular enough to garner a secondary market. If anything this offers a lower stakes opportunity to teach people how to engage with random chance before children or adults get into something crazier like sports betting or options trading when that becomes available to them. At then end of the day when you open a pack for most people it is a 100% loss of money because you literally never sell the card it just goes in the binder even if you get the "500" card. In addition if you actually like the card game the collector sphere makes this the cheapest game to play because the low rarity versions of cards go for like 2 dollars and you can build a deck for like 50 bucks unlike any other tcg on the market. If there are rarer versions of cards people will want it and it'll be expensive that is the nature of opening random packs of cards. There are plenty of ways to get stunning pokemon art for just a few dollars in the other oodles of merch they pump out or from fan artists world wide. Education is the only way aside from banning all toys with chance involved. On another note just as a decent human being if you see it being a problem for somebody you should try to step in as a seller or at least not make it worse

Complete agree with your viewpoint, in every market you technical have some overpriced low stock high demand in products or item. This is really way, in play us as people should atleast make a pack value of the card worth the market value of the pack. As well are it is us end users that make the price up.

Its definitely gambling nowadays. I went from smokey casinos to shiny cardboard at home. At least im off the streets and saving money on booze by drinking at home rofl!

this is the first time I hear a store saying they are worried about customers spending too much. Thank you for being an awesome example of how it should be done! I overspent on Black Friday deals and it made me feel a little queasy ...but the difference is, that I don't open packs, I sit on it and wait because I like to see numbers go up xD

Well, to take a more macro look at it, its not just Pokemon now but other TCGs as well such as MTG, Disney Lorcana, One Piece, Weiss Schwarz, Dragon Ball Super to name a few since this space is growing. I've been going down a rabbit hole of TCG in the past few months. As long as the RUclipsrs keep making vids opening up packs and boxes its only going to reinforce people like myself into purchasing and opening more packs in the future. Just don't purchase any more than you can afford and do it on a budget. If its getting out of hand, then its best to take a break from it. Buying singles is also better so you don't waste money buying a bunch of boxes imo.

The worst part is how this affects kids. I’ve seen them open pack after pack chasing rare cards because they think it’s normal, thanks to online influencers. They toss aside all the other cards, believing they’re worthless because that’s what they’ve been taught by influencers and the market. They’re not interested in playing the game, it’s all about the money. There’s more content online about investing and pulling cards than about actually playing. Content creators need to take responsibility for what they post. In the end, you always lose a significant amount of money. Thank you for sharing this. We need more content like this to raise awareness and caution others.

Up to a point everyone is free to do with their money whatever they want but I do like to think that if I am about to be VERY dumb someone would say something. I appreciete specially from the seller perspective it might be an odd position, but at the end of the day, everyone wins if purchases/consumtion is done in moderation and within reason!

It’s definitely something to think about, especially considering the value of some cards-particularly with younger players involved. We all love opening boosters, but there comes a point where it might be better to take a different approach. Looking to the future, I feel like things could start getting a little out of hand. However, I don’t think the responsibility should fall solely on you as the shop owner. Friends and family also need to step up as a voice of reason. There’s nothing worse than seeing a friend buy one booster box and then immediately go for another. I’d much rather have someone say, “Hey, maybe that’s enough for now.

Haha I remember when I was in daycare when I was 9, there was some kinda pawnshop next door run by some Asian gentleman and he always sold fake cards for extremely cheap, but my friends always considered those cards worthless

Authentic cards will have a shiny, square stamp on the bottom right corner of the front of the card with the words “Yu-Gi-Oh!” in small, horizontal script. Fake cards may be missing the foil stamp or the letters may be arranged vertically. The color of the foil should be either gold or silver.

Do they have scratches when new? I found that particularly on the cheaper brands.

This is a shot in the dark... I have a SKE-001 Blue-Eyes & can’t tell if it’s real or fake. Went to the flea market a lot as a kid & have sorted out the hopefully real cards. Any help? 🙃
