    This video is just excellent, Thank You very much I am not a signaller, or a signal engineer, but I have personally learnt a lot from this. I have two GWR instruments almost the same as in this video, my permissive instrument has a green background, and to the left of the 'normal' position, mine says 'Line Clear' on the dial face, I also have a Double A.B instrument like the one in the video so seeing this video has been a joy, and I look forward to the next one in the series, all have been good so far, this one especially due to the link to my own two instruments.

    With positive motivation may I point to a couple errors you may be able to easily correct. i.e. Your in-video opening title says "Several times a Tear......", and your video description tells us that Acton is in South London, rather than West London.

    Its amazing how all that electromechanical equipment was built and maintained and to think these days all that mechanical information and interlocking can now be stored on something the size of a flash or usb drive !

      @@wideyxyz2271 indeed, if you look at how storage mediums have all changed over time it’s mad, next to the programme machine at the Epping museum is a more modern replacement which uses a usb dongle instead of all that roll 😯

    I was always told it was bad practice to use pliers.Done skilfully you didn’t need them.

      @@SpoonyMcSpoonface it was indeed, but then the wire became more springy (apparently a batch of Chinese wire that managed to get all around the system), and having seen others use wrapping tools,wire guns and such you start to wonder what’s the actual issue, for example trying to do a pole support guy with much thicker by hand is incredibly hard) but there’s a tool for that like a giant plier, my old lineman Jim gave me a wire wrapping tool he’d had since early BR days with a cutter on its end so cutting stranded galvanised cable with a tool is not a new thing , it may have been down to an adopted practice but that doesn’t mean it’s always the right thing, remember radium baths and cigarettes were once said to be good for you, as was asbestos in bedsheets and arsenic in wallpaper 🙁

      @@wideyxyz2271 yes unfortunately no tripod and only two hands, so ended up doing the before and after bits as it was easier, it does make you wonder if having multiple arms would be a benefit for the S&T, my issues would think so as I could do more diy 🤗😭

    How are they using double line block for single line? are there special arrangements to stop both blocks being moved at the same time (other than the train staff) is it normal for train staff only lines to be signalled using double line block instruments? edit: just saw 6:16 is the top indicator not labeled?

      @@djbhi2 from what I was told it is used only for description via the bell, but on busy days, it is more for showing the visitors ,though there are plans

    What’s with the brown levers? Why does one have a single white band, and why does the other have multiple? What do they control?

      @@TheChris2009 brown levers usually for release of ground frames separate to the Signalbox There is a small ground frame outside the box used for shunting the yard to the mainline when the box is closed , it is interlocked with the box but used when it’s quiet periods and the Signalbox is not open and manned hence brown levers but white stripe (release of signal) The striped brown and white levers would be a king lever , when operated in conjunction with the interlocking and tokens it allows you to clear all the normally opposing signals in both directions so you can close the box but still have trains signalled past. Eg all signals cleared but no one working the box

    Good to see another Dutton frame..I worked a Dutton frame in Woodley Jct box, situated on the CLC line from Stockport-Godley..I always found it strange to see the locking at the back of the frame, rather than the usual locking underneath the operating floor..good video..The only other Dutton frame I have seen is in Douglas, IOM, but as that is narrow gauge, so isd the frame smaller than a standard sized frame..The box is now out of use, but the last time I were there in 2016, I arranged to visit it, and was accompanied by a member of staff...

    🎉 superb ..... quite the contrast to being a Signalman on the Central Highlands Tourist Railway (CHTR) in the 1990's - 2000's at Daylesford, Musk and Bullarto (now the Spa Country Railway - Daylesford) as we only had Train Staff and Ticket (pursuant to the Tourist Railway Act) ie. No signal box and few signals ...... Great Work😊

    my uncle Reg Banks worked at Eastleigh signal box for years bless him. i think he started at Brockenhurst probably in the 1950s 😁🐢

    nice to see some old Strowger there (in the thumbnail picture). Strowger was being phased out of BT when I joined in '88 as an apprentice. now in 2024 , we are phasing out the PSTN.so my job comes to an end. currently applying for Railway Signalling in ELY (cambs)

      I know the feeling, luckily our colleague Mike ran me through a taster of how it all works which is the video you’ve got the thumbnail from, I never really got into that side of it being more the S side than the T side and yet we did have two STROWGER driven train describer setups with the relay sets rather than the selectors, those were at cheadle hulme and at romiley, the latter becoming spare parts after removal for some of the P.O type relays in our old STROWGER exchange up at Rowsley. Good luck with the job move.

      Total random visit, was delayed getting a ferry over to dads so went and had a nip in, they were happy to let me see everything as it was a quiet day ., really nice little place to visit

    Just to clarify, some of what is seen here are photos of a friends block in comparison and also the donor Caledonian Railway block too that was used to remake the missing top “cabinet” for mine, of which he kindly supplied many dimensions and photos to help. Work continues now on the locks, recovering the coils and artwork has been drawn up for the front face.

      Have a check out on RUclips at the other railway control videos for absolute block, there’s a few out there, it’s pretty run of the mill once you get used to it, of course I’m used to the other side of it ( the actual wiring side which is far more complicated) 😄
